What’s interesting to me is that Australian authorities didn’t wait for the group to return to Australia and arrest them then. Australia doesn’t have the death penalty and won’t extradite anyone to a country to face criminal charges if the death penalty is a possibility, but yet they contacted the Indonesian authorities about this group, knowing Indonesia gives the death penalty for drug smuggling. Hypocrisy, much?
Yes cause Australia 🇦🇺 can’t prostitute like Asia If your child was affected by drugs you may think differently. The mother that questions here sons return home needs to think about every other mother that have those same questions of a drug addicted child It works on a supply and demand, if the supply not around nor the demand the market dries up. I wish you all the best I would like to think you thought of the best for our children that you supplied.
@@sallyrose9507 I’ve no doubt the Australian authorities were making an example out of them by having Indonesia slap the death penalty on them, but it’s hypocritical as all get out. EDIT: getting back to the point of my post

In no way are the Bail 9 innocent, but they were humans who deserve a life, I agree a life spent in prison, but a life nonetheless.
If you want to do drugs ,stay out of countries with a death penalty for a drug conviction. Do all the drugs you want to deal or use it yourself in Europe or the north American continent.
One of Myuran Sukumara last statements was very profound. He told his spiritual advisor "Ask the question in a year’s time, has this made any difference? Has it made any difference in Indonesia? Has it made any difference to the way Australians feel about the death penalty? Ask this question in one year, in five years and in 10 years. Ask it to yourself, ask it to those around you and ask it to anyone who will listen. Has this made a difference either way? Has this made a difference?”
Well, if they were not caught, they would have ruined the lives od people who would have taken the drugs they were supposed to traffic. A death sentence serves a purpose to show whoever who considers trafficking or possesing drugs the severe consequence of it.
@Jimmy Bufferz Just Chan and Sukumaran, the two ringleaders, were shot by a firing squad. The rest are still there serving out their life sentences. I think one guy died. He was the lucky one.
I can say this Bali prison is like boarding school environment. They have gym, you get to wear your own clothes, hang out with your family, face to face, huggings and kissings, you get to smoke, hang around, they get to eat their home cook food during family visitation. . You can never see such in other prisons around the world!
My heart breaks for the parents. I came from a devoutly conservative religious family. My brother rebelled and got involved in drugs while I was the one that got educated and had a semi normal life. It goes to show that you can parent but other influences can lead you astray. I hope that the parents find peace someday. I cannot imagine their pain.
I agree. I can’t even imagine the pain their families must still be going through. We can’t watch our kids 24/7, but the best we can do as human beings is to install morals and hope and be there always for them no matter what path they choose.
I say maybe don't be devoutly conservative, devout convertism is unquestioning, it has little value for independent thought, similarly on drugs, I say people start being openminded to them, why are drugs bad? Their addiction right? What if some don't get addicted, should it be bad then? I don't think so, drug fearmongering hurts people, same with closeminded conservatism or for that matter the same on the left

Most South East Asian countries have death penalty for drug smuggling. Dealers/smugglers even target school children in Indonesia. Once I attended a campaign from the national narcotics boards to raise awareness about narcotics in candies/street food, it lured children into addiction
Putting drugs in food of unsuspecting people makes no sense. Especially children. There's a huge risk of overdose and a kid wouldn't have money for it (among multiple other reasons), so it makes even _less_ sense to target them as a potential customer base. Sounds like a silly urban legend told to people without experience in drugs to terrify them into further vilifying drug users and dealers.
In America, a similar urban legend (drugs being hidden in Halloween candy) was spread after a case in which a little kid accidentally got into his uncle's drugs and tragically died. In an attempt to save the uncle from prison, the family lied and claimed the kid must've gotten poisoned by drugs concealed in the candy he'd gotten at Halloween, which had taken place shortly before the kid died. Someone heard about it and the terror spread, even though the truth eventually came to light.
@@kingayy9267 BNN: Beware of Drugs in the Form of Candy and Cakes Thursday, 2 June 2016 | 15:22 WIB Depok - There is a real drug emergency in Indonesia. Based on data from the University of Indonesia Health Research Center (Puslitkes UI) and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), drugs are now targeting children in Indonesia. As many as 2.2 percent of Indonesia's 250 million population have used drugs. From the data from the BNN and the UI Research Center, the age of drug users is in the range of 10-59 years. This means that 10-year-olds who are in grade III or IV of elementary school are already drug users. In order to prevent children from taking drugs, BNN takes precautions from an early age. Namely since the child sits at the level of Early Childhood Education (PAUD). BNN provides counseling activities involving PAUD teachers in Depok City. Deputy for Community Empowerment, Inspector General of Police, Bachtiar Tambunan, said that when viewed from the age number of drug users who are at the age of 10 years, prevention of the dangers of drugs must be carried out before that age. "We all have to move to prevention as early as possible before the child is 10 years old, so we provide counseling about the dangers of drugs to PAUD and kindergarten teachers," said Bachtiar Tambunan to SP in the Lotus Room, Depok City Hall, Depok City, West Java, Thursday (2/2). /6). The teachers received counseling from BNN resource persons regarding the dangers of drugs. Later it is hoped that these teachers can convey to their students and parents about the dangers of drugs and so that children avoid drugs. Currently, revealed Bachtiar, various modes of drugs have been carried out by drug networks. Starting from drugs in the form of candy distributed to elementary students to drugs in brownies which are in great demand by college students. For drug dealer networks, they have no objections to giving free drugs in the form of candy to school students. "They don't have a problem if they have to give it for free at the beginning. Later it is hoped that these children can become users who of course have to buy the drugs," said Bachtiar. Eradication of drugs, said Bachtiar, is not only the responsibility of BNN and the government alone. All Indonesian citizens can participate in eradicating drugs as regulated in Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning drugs in articles 104-108. BNN also encourages all elements, including the private sector, ministries, to eradicate drugs by carrying out Bang Wawan's strategy, namely Development with Anti-Drug Insights. "The private sector can use CSR funds to fight drugs, factories can make the environment clean from drugs," concluded Bachtiar. When you go to prison your family also goes to _prison_ with you. It's a sad thing all around whatever the circumstances. Nevertheless, they're in a better place now without putting themselves and their families in agonies. R.I.P
For potential people who are thinking of flouting the law, Think of your families and the pain that they have to go through before you do something in a moment of folly.
@@JBexplores that's the law there. It is absolutely horrible, yes, but that is the law. I would imagine they didn't get stays, not only for the crime committed, but as examples for the world to see. They are NOT playing games and mean what they say. Just watching this with the officer unlocking death row without a concern about the inmates says so much. That officer hadn't the slightest concern walking right into the cells. In the states prisoners would be put in 4 point shackles BEFORE the cell was unlocked. They are not messing around! Don't commit crimes and don't bring the crap into their country because THIS is the penalty! Yes it is extreme! No way should people be executed for drugs, because it's almost as if they're being executed for being ill. Chan admitted he was a user as well, and addiction has been proven many times over to be an illness. They weren't executed for using, they were executed for bringing the crap into the country, but there are countries that execute addicts.

Yes, tell me about it.. If the Australia government knew they were carrying drugs why not arrest them in Australia?? Who allows a foreign country to execute their own citizens?? Pretty sick.
Sarah Bucket How did the crime start in Bali? They was smuggling drugs into Bali from Australia right? So they had to be in possession of the dope in Australia, which I'm assuming is illegal, before they got into Bali. Say for instance, if someone was trying to smuggle dope from US to Canada, and the US cops knew, seems like they would bust them instead of tipping off the Canadians. Idk, maybe I need to rewatch this documentary

They wanted to start small and grow bigger and maybe eventually become a drug boss with lots of money and ladies. It didn't work out as they expected. That's life. You don't become a drug lordin one day. There are many consequences. Many people try their luck with drugs daily. Sometimes successfully and sometimes not. Selling drugs is big business. It will not stop. There will always be addicted people. Rich or poor. That's life.
Chan and sukumaran were executed in 2015. They did a lot for that prison and to me, they didn't seem like bad people. I've been an addict, I know bad people, these aren't them. Rest In Peace.

At the borders, there are signs all over the place, before landing we are all reminded about the death penalty, for drug trafficking, why take the risk? However, I believe drugs should be decriminalized, but, I have seen young kids go mad, and wasted, after bein sold drugs in sweets, and snacks, for this, the death penalty

I admire Indonesia's anti-drug policy and tenacity, the country would be in a mess today if they weren't so serious about drugs. Greetings from Azerbaijan
No it wouldn't, people try their luck drug traffiking there just because of their anti-drug policy. The more they are anti-drug, the more the price of the drug goes up. I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional and the politics were the ones who controlled it. Why let other drug dealers get inside the country and sell it for 50 dollars a gram, when you can impose death penalty to the drug lords, and make the very same gram go to 1000 dollars a gram.
@@carlkamuti Yeah. Say whatever you want about human rights, but here in Indonesia, we don't have homeless people faded on drugs on the street, unlike some other western countries.

Trey Arnold - I agree, drug sentences in the US are bad enough, but the death penalty should be a last resort for the most heinous of crimes, and drugs do not fall into that category.
My drug? Drugs are a problem everywhere, but the death penalty is murder. Your name is Methadone so I assume you are an addict? Many addicts spend years in prison for simply using, and or selling drugs to support the habit. I find this backwards, that money should be spent to help addicts, not incarcerate, or sentence to death. Also, the men in this documentary were very young, basically children when they chose to smuggle drugs, they were stupid, and felt invincible as all young people do. This must be a consideration when sentencing, but it was not.
Ok so Australia "somehow" gets wind of this crews operating, forwards the info to Bali authorities knowing good and well that they will likely get death sentences or life if they're lucky, then has the audacity to clamor for their sentences to be commuted and pulls the ambassador after their pleas are ignored? Seems a little disingenuous if you ask me considering Australian authorities could've popped them upon their arrival back in Australia and handled it on their terms in their country...
sadly the australian federal police are at there fault by calling the indonesian authorities after one of the drug mules dad only wanted him to be arrested in australia and wanted him to server jail there instead
You are exactly right! This is unbelievable! So sick they should have dealt with them in Australia because they wouldn't allow people to be killed for a non violent offense, and these guys seemed as rehabilitated as it gets...I'm not easily upset about things but this is absolutely a human rights issue in my eyes
It's very well known anywhere in SE Asia, you get caught with drugs, you face the death penalty. Their stupid choices for a quick pay check cost them their lives & their families have to live with the pain. The prison governor was right as well. They deserved a second chance.
@Exposure 0161 Drug trafficking cases will always be done by foreigners, why would an Indonesian smuggle drugs out of Indonesia? If anything, they would smuggle it in, and caught in a foreign airport, making them the foreigner.
They weren’t smuggling them to Indonesia, they were smuggling them to Australia. Why the hell would anyone smuggle drugs to Indonesia from Australia...
They were smuggling OUT (exporting) of Bali….attempting to IN (Importing) into Australia. You do have a slight point…the penalty is very severe if caught regarding importing/exporting.
They were smuggling them from Indonesia to Australia not the other way around which is why the Australian Federal Police contacted Indonesian authorities.
These place is called "Rutan" in Indonesia, Basically a less harsh prison to educate prisoners so they won't go back to doing crime once they're out, and sometimes for people like these to enjoy their last moments.
i think McMahons should get the Nobel Peace Prize for his courage, compassion and persistence. He never give up for those kids. This story is tragic and sad.
Eric Moore they are not members of a street gang. They were kids in college that saw a chance for a payday to start a business, buy a car & have the finer things in life. Yes, they deserve consequences but not death. This is a sad story. Kids do stupid things. They didn’t kill anyone. People that use drugs seek drugs not the other way around. And I agree & know 1st hand that people that use drugs are sick & need treatment.
Matih Katok just because we don’t agree that these men deserved to die doesn’t mean we think your nephew deserved to die. I am not in a position to judge the lives of others; however I have to disagree with part of your post. Adults who for whatever reason chose to take drugs, but when they put it in snacks or otherwise sell to kids whose morals are not yet made, they are100% responsible, A young man in Thailand went nuts after ingesting drugs and almost chopped his grandad to death. Andrew and Myuran are the only ones who got executed. Bali 9 and their story has always fascinated me. As much as they did wrong they were not evil. As Myuran said he was stupid and he probably thought he would not get caught. This is the second time watching this documentary and today I felt really sad unlike the first time.
Yea, I too am intrigued by their stories. Such a shame they were executed. I’m not condoning their actions, although they did demonstrate how much they matured and the positive contributions they made to others while incarcerated.
There's a good chance they wouldn't have been caught if Rush's father hadn't contacted Australian authorities and told them his son was planning to transport drugs.
Myuran, what a kind and sweet soul. Just from this video I can see what a kind man he was. Sending his family all the love and strength. I hope they are doing well. Something terrible has happened but I hope they can put this behind them somehow and become stronger as a family. His family are lovely.

Had the Bali 9 been successful, I would argue that they would have handed down their own form of death sentences to the poor addicts who would have overdosed on the drugs they imported into Australia. It is unfortunate that both Andrew and Myuran only found religion and art respectively after they were arrested and death penalties given. Also, they were importing the drugs to their own country so Indonesia could have applied a sentence in line with the sentencing guideline in Australia but it is all now a moot point: rest in peace, Andrew and Myuran!
I am practising addiction medicine in WA and as someone who has seen countless lives destroyed by all sorts of drugs, I fully stand behind Indonesia's decision. These traffickers were a group of smart, cunning and selfish men who had zero care for all the potential lives that would be ruined through drug supply. They knew of the serious repercussions if they got caught, took the risk and behold, got caught. How our ex pm Abott tried to bail them out was simply ridiculous - if our own leaders are not prepared to set a firm example, then drugs will continue to ruin our nation and my list of patients will just go on and on
Except the victims are underage, addiction is a choice and a decision. No one forced anyone to take drugs, addicts do that to themselves and most times refuse help because they keep chasing the high. No one should be killed for trafficking drugs.

For a county that abolished the death penalty; it does seem criminal to inform the Indonesian government, of drug crimes committed in their country. Why not simply arrest the Bali 9, when they landed in Australia?
To kill them and send a message to the rest, of course. Simply because they don't have the balls to do it themselves. It's typical of the First World to pretend that they keep their hands clean while letting other countries do their dirty work for them.

So basically, it was the Australian police who set up the sting and handed to the police in Bali. Strange, that they wouldn’t have dealt with it as they entered Australia. I guess they had an arrangement, perhaps the Bali police were low on cases and needed a bust. So obviously some political move. Indonesia makes it very, very clear that drug trafficking comes with the death penalty. So these two really have no excuse. As for Chan, he had prior offences so it wasn't his first time around.

We can make mistakes in life. Everybody makes mistakes. Yet, they did not make just a mistake. You should see at the result of what they were planning to make money on: the destruction caused by heroine, the misery, the pain of many people, parents and children of the ones who are addicted. Think to that.
Can you said that to serial killers aswell? Do you know how many young generations have drug problems and even got killed from overdosed? It’s not right to killing another human being but also it’s not right to selling drug
I think every country has its own rules and laws. We cannot only see from the perpetrators but also the state's condition. President Jokowi at that time said that "Indonesia has a drug emergency" meaning that many generations in Indonesia have died because of drug abuse. That's why I think this punishment is appropriate. One act but many victims.
Most South East Asian countries have death penalty for drug smuggling. Dealers/smugglers even target school children in Indonesia. Once I attended a campaign from the national narcotics boards to raise awareness about narcotics in candies/street food, it lured children into addiction
I heard about drugs in candies and street food...I thought it was a myth

BNN: Beware of Drugs in the Form of Candy and Cakes
Thursday, 2 June 2016 | 15:22 WIB
Depok - There is a real drug emergency in Indonesia.

Caution, Cannabis Candy is Starting to Be Found in abundance
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Directorate General of Customs & Excise in collaboration with the North Kalimantan Regional Police uncovered drug smuggling through postal items.
A total of 16 candy packs weighing 747.48 grams of various colors were arrested by officers for allegedly containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a marijuana compound.
The Head of the East Kalimantan Customs and Excise Office, Rusman Hadi, revealed the chronology of the prosecution, which began with the tracking carried out by the K-9 Customs and Excise unit of East Kalimantan.
"Tracking was carried out at the Balikpapan Post Office. From the results of lab tests on the suspected items, the results were reactive. Following up on this, we carried out development and investigations with the North Kalimantan Police Narcotics Directorate," said Rusman. Investigations lead to a person with the initials DC. Officers make arrests in front of the Tanjung Selor Hilir Post Office, North Kalimantan. According to the suspect's confession, he had three times sent drugs by post.
"The first shipment was in the form of chocolate bars, while the second and third were in colorful candies," added Rusman.

What a joke😅
I am practising addiction medicine in WA and as someone who has seen countless lives destroyed by all sorts of drugs, I fully stand behind Indonesia's decision. These traffickers were a group of smart, cunning and selfish men who had zero care for all the potential lives that would be ruined through drug supply. They knew of the serious repercussions if they got caught, took the risk and behold, got caught. How our ex pm Abott tried to bail them out was simply ridiculous - if our own leaders are not prepared to set a firm example, then drugs will continue to ruin our nation and my list of patients will just go on and on
Booooo
If you practice addiction medicine then you shouldn't hold that belief.
Except the victims are underage, addiction is a choice and a decision. No one forced anyone to take drugs, addicts do that to themselves and most times refuse help because they keep chasing the high. No one should be killed for trafficking drugs.

God bless these two beautiful man ✝️🙌🙌🙌
Looks incredible easy to escape from. All sorts of trees plants etc to climb, lots of available weapons (weight equipment etc), pencil thin bars with crappy welds, and so on.
Indeed, and board a ship to hide and go out of the Island. Hide anywhere since they're apparently not and infamous criminal faces om the island, go to the Australia? Maybe the aussie authorities wouldn't bring them back to Bali? Who are they kidding, of course the aussie authority would want to build enmity between australia and indonesia by keeping indonesia's prisoners.
Should have sent Australian special forces in to get their boys back, lol that shit country ain’t gonna declare shit
@@drakeandjosh007 Let's go to war, don't feel right when you are wrong, remember what the law means? To prevent not to punish

The AFP got them arrested, now the Prime Minister is pleading for a lesser sentences. The (Cop) father of the guy that also got caught is lucky his kids isn’t going to be shot.
Anyone knows the book they were suggested to read ? "World seen from the poor, the unprivileged, the victims of injustice", in short world seen from the most amazing, skilled, smartest persons, I need to give it a shot.
RIP guys, you won’t be forgotten and didn’t deserve this.
Howard Zinn's A People's History
whenever i saw them smile or joke around it made me happy. they are still optimistic and that nice to see
They was executed 7 years ago
As an indonesian, i hate this.. they are really sorry for what they did, especially chan with his speech broke my heart:( should be just a life sentence. I mean it’s good that they released Lawrence, so why don’t they reduce others’ time?? Meanwhile rapists in here only got 7-20 years. Yikes i hate the law😭 RIP🙏🏻
Thank you for being open & against the death penalty for these guys, I hope more Indonesians feel the way you do & bring about a change in the death penalty, All the best to you & yours.
We can make mistakes in life. Everybody makes mistakes. Yet, they did not make just a mistake. You should see at the result of what they were planning to make money on: the destruction caused by heroine, the misery, the pain of many people, parents and children of the ones who are addicted. Think to that.
Well, you know the rules about drug trafficking right? Then they should get executes
