Johnny's Reloading Bench thank you sir! I really appreciate the shout out, i have some questions about your mat. Send me an email at Westdesertshooter at Gmail dot com, or anyone that has a question about stickers! Thanks man.
Can you add something like a tip jar to your patreon? I can understand if you only want recurring payments. But it could be a option to get some more for people who like to tip occasionally, like me.
Johnny's Reloading Bench have you ever used IMR 4895 in your .223 ? Used it in my 22-250 shot my best group .560at 100yds and several other sub minute groups. Was quite surprised.
Johnny's Reloading Bench Yeah, your probably right. Cartridge data on multiple cartridges would be good. Maybe common powders used for a given cartridge. I'm sure you will have something good on there.
Johnny's Reloading I'd take a mat. Put your logo on it along with the "Don't blow your face off" or "Be safe and stick to Grandma's loads" ;-) Love your videos!
As an attorney, who probably isn't licensed to practice law in your state, I can say that you've already published load data, along with reasonable warnings. Relax.
Dang. I was trying to persuade myself to just buy ready made ammo for the .223 wylde like a filthy commoner, since it costs about the same. Then you had to go and publish this stuff and convince me to do work.
For the reloading mat, I think you should make a detailed mat of each caliber you reload for. It would contain a large diagram of the cartridge, with all relevant information: C.O.A.L., trim length, etc. Then you could include your own reloading data right on the mat, you could even include the velocities and accuracy out of the multiple platforms that you have. Soon you'll have enough data to make a whole loading book. I would buy one in .223/5.56.
JRB - Always good for 223 /5.56 shooters to have some bulk bullets...mine are Winchester 55 FMJs and I have enough to do several seasons of regular blasting ammo. But these bullets were pointless for varmint shooting. OK for High Power practice at 100 yards though... Just checked out Bob's 223 Bulk Bullets and they've got good stuff over there...Have a great day, FC Steve
I really like this series, Johnny. It's one thing to Say "This kick ass bullet and that kick ass bullet", However showing a Budget reasonable priced everyday bullet that shoots lights out is awesome. I really want to see the Primer tests. see if things change in accuracy. Btw. H335 is the standard Powder that Lake City uses in the M193 ammo. They Buy in in valium by the rail freight car load and call it something else as government designation powder. It was the answer to the M-16 fouling problems of Vietnam and using BLC-2 as a propellant for that round.
Love the mat idea and the popular rounds with Saami data sounds cool. Maybe under each round some great powder selections you have had great success for each of those calibers. You have definitely done the leg work. And don’t blow your face off.
I never minded the look of your well used bench. On the other hand, the mat looks fine too. I'm new to rifles and rifle reloading and these videos have been a great help. Thanks.
Dude you want to push speed use TAC that has a great pressure curve and I have been able to really load some smoked stuff before any pressure signs. Like 65gr Sierra game kings 2930fps out of my 16" gun and the pressure signs look fine! 😁
I pushed the 75 grain Hornady bthp to 2900 fps with Tac. Slight ejector marks on about a 1/4 of the cases so it was right on edge but they are really accurate and moving!
I missed this video... but your “Grandma loads” were almost identical to mine. I’m using hornady 55gr FMJ/BT, 23.5gr H335, once fired LC 5.56 brass, and CCI 41 primers OAL 2.215. I’m going to try Bob’s bullets and ramp up the load to 24 to 24.5 gr of H335
I would purchase one of the matts. I plan to create a channel myself once I have my reloading equipment so I can chronicle my start and will definitely mention you and all the other reloaders I watch.
Reload a few 1000 rounds before starting your channel. You need to pay really close attention to what you're doing. I'm new to reloading also I've only reloaded under a thousand rounds mostly .223 and about 100 rounds of .308 I will be reloading 6.5 Grendel as soon as I can get brass. Good luck with your channel
So, the video every day thing is the best thing to happen to RUclips in a very long time, keep up the good work 👌🏻and the 20x30 works fine, I'd pick up a couple 5.56 + 300blk mats
Great vid JRB, I picked up 1000 Bobs' bullets after your last video, looking forward to testing them. The bench mat seems like a good idea. I think the IMR 8208 XBR will do very well, it's becoming one of my favorite powders. It consistently gives my Varget loads a run for their money. N140 also shoots lights out in pretty much all my loads also, but the price of N140 sucks.
I just built two new reloading benches & this time I used real NICE 3/4" finish plywood from Menards. It's super smooth & clean & comes in precut 2 x 8 sheets so I had to do zero cutting. It's night & day over that cheap 1/4" bulk plywood.
Great job on both the vid and making connections at Bob's. As far as the mat goes 18"X24" or 15"X18" ( the larger would work on my bench perfectly :) I'm in the process of building a PID and found a neat solution to the problem you had with cutting the braided metal. Believe it or not scissors! Tape the braid where you want it to be cut at then unbraid to that point and use the scissors to cut the loose material. Works great and the tape keeps the sheath from unbraiding past where you want it.
You always make great videos with lots of info. I'm just starting out reloading .223 and I loaded 50 rounds each of Hodgdon Benchmark, Hodgdon CFE223 and Hodgdon Varget at the lowest charge weight. I haven't shot any rounds yet but I like the idea of marking on the target of what ones you are shooting to see the best results. I might try that next time I go to the range. Thanks again for the great videos, watching them makes my night shifts go by quick.
I just tested the same mild CFE 223 loads (47.5gr) in .308 with 155gr HPBT that I did in FEB and boy let me tell you it was a huge pressure difference this week. 35 degrees FEB and 92 degrees SEP in Missouri... I know I will not use CFE 223 in .308 again, did not like the results at all. I am looking forward to the bench mat idea.. will buy one for sure, if not a couple of them. 20x30 is good: my bench is actually 36x 72 so I have plenty of room.
Hey, just an update...loaded up 25.1 gr of H335 in LC and CCI primer under my Bobs' Bullets and shot it hot. About 1200 rounds in and melted first gas ring... Third is OK and 2nd is showing signs... Lol 150 rounds under 30 min several times s fun! But back to the load. Shoots good. Just got a base carbine with Miculek Brake and a 5X prism from Primary Arms and at 100 shooting fast 80% less than 2.5" group and outside about 4" over 30 rounds in under 4 min. Lol. Heck even Mirage is a problem. But matched my 75gr BTHP Hornady I can touch the 300 yard gong without trying so happy. I really don't shoot groups per say with this. That facatory trigger really sucks. Oh well it will be changed when my gas rings show up.
Yea the 20"x30" would be good here too. I would definitely buy with your logo. "Don't blow your face off" is classic. Would definitely buy. Keep goin JRB. Love the vids!
I didn't mean to givve a hard time about velocity, just relaying my experience. Your previous video was at 223 Remington loads but there are also 5.56 NATO pressure loads. Please let us know how the brass looked at your highest loads. My FC223 looks fine at 25 grains of H335 and 28 grains of CFE223. Thanks for the video
I would bump up the loads bit by bit, checking the pressure signs, monitoring the accuracy. My experience leads me to believe that the most accurate .223 loads occur at the top of pressure range when the case is full. When in doubt, compare brass with Federal XM193 or other "5,56" loads. The factory ammo is hot, has extractor marks, flattened primers, and numerous dents. Even so, the AR chamber can handle it.
I have not used H335 for quite some time. H335 didn't seem to meter too well in my Dillon 550. I have found that the 55gr Hornady has the best accuracy with a full case which is above the "Max" loads in most manuals. The manuals are guides not absolutes and I believe are intended to get you started and let the reloader figure out the load he wants. I always compare pressure signs against Federal XM193. Currently, I am using 27.5gr WCC844 and 26.5gr AA2230 to push 55gr Hornady's. The velocity is around 3200FPS last time I checked using a 20" barrel. Work up in increments like Johhny, measure the speed, monitor pressure signs and observe your accuarcy in 5 shots groups.. Your ammo will be better than factory if you work at it. IMHO
Would you describe this as a heavily compressed load? I'm getting the impression that the CFE powders in general get way more consistent once compressed. That seems to be the case for CFE BLK, by my and other's experience.
Man your experience with CFE223 are so damn Reminiscent of mine it's eerie... some folks claim amazing results with it, yet I always get funky inconsistent groups with my 5.56, 6.5 Grendel, and 308 Win.. sometimes get 3 in the same hole, then 2 wonky fliers that make no sence.. The mat is a great idea. I use a Sierra bullet poster that I had laminated.
It's frustrating. I thought CFE223 was going to work better. Still several ball powders to test, though! TAC, X-Terminator and BL-C(2) being the first that come to mind.
Rob Kilcollins I've heard from one youtuber that CFE BLK becomes stable when it's slightly compressed. It looks like his claim is supported by Jonny's result, even though I didn't see it if it was compressed i suspect it was.
20X30 mat size would work or maybe just a little smaller too! Since you were thinking about it -- I highly recommend the Lee Precision Bench Primer (LP90700). It is not perfect, but works well and helps my old hand from becoming too sore and tired using the hand (squeeze) loader. I am an old guy trying to lean reloading as a new hobby and for sue your videos have been very good, educational and fun to watch! Keep up the good work.
From the reloads I've produced, CFE 223 demonstrates the same high SD and ES in velocity as well in .308 Win when dealing with light bullets at the top end of the charge weights. The higher variations in velocity SD and ES are likely multiplied when you use a barrel smaller than what is specified for that ammo. Once you start pushing the charges of this powder above the optimum charge weight for complete powder burn in the barrel, the accuracy and velocity consistency starts to tank quickly. Rifle used was gas piston .308 Win 20 inch barrel with 1/12 twist. Assuming the following is the specifications for the ammo/rifle used: .308 Win/7.62 nato 147 grain to 150 grain fmj with 22 to 23 inch barrel. .223 Rem/5.56mm 55gr fmj with 20 inch barrel. CFE 223 just seems to burn too slow than what I would like for .223 rem or .308 Win using light ball ammo. Heavier bullets might be a better choice for this powder since the charge will be reduced and slower burning powder tends to favor heavier bullets.
I like the mat idea. I am not sure I can use one on my bench, but I would if I could. I have a very narrow bench with three presses mounted on it, so not a lot of room for a 30" mat.
Your not begging . Your putting out some outstanding detailed videos . Best on RUclips. The subs increase show that. I don't mind at all , throwing you a few bucks . Plus ,your answering all my rookie questions . That I know you answered a hundred times. And your one year break from being unemployed is fast approaching . Soon your going to suffer like the rest of us. : )
20x30 with a good portion of the outer edges not printed on. This would hopefully give us the option of cutting it down to fit. My bench is 24x60 (the Harbor Freight "hardwood" workbench) with additional reinforcement where I have my press mounted.
Johnny's Reloading Bench, I haven't loaded any Hodgdon's CFE-223 as of yet, but I have had outstanding groups with Hodgdon's 335 in 223 Remington with the 55 Gr Sierra SBT. Granted I am shooting a Savage bolt gun Model 12 with a 26 inch barrel. I don't own a AR-15 but my question is why do you shoot your AR Suppressed ? Another question is if you sighted your rifle in, then why is most of your hits to the right and below the point of aim?
Enjoying the videos. Maybe I missed it, but what Vortex scope are you using and how do you like it? Running a few diamond backs on different rifles and liking them. Keep up the solid work on the videos!
Do you still use that 20 dollar scale i love mine i also had one same results but when trickling i found slower is better and stuck with my diamond pro scale it took alotof the velocity spred out down to a minimum
Your work bench hd character, but the mat is a good idea, the width is good, I could live with less depth, but I can adjust. A one inc square grid pattern around, "Don't Blow Your Face Off!" sounds good to me. Call me a safety/legal/liablity Nancy, but I would't put any reloading data on the mat.
20x30 is a good size. I also have a question. I’m just getting into reloading, in fact all I’m doing now is collecting tools and materials. Just ordered 1000 rds of Bob’s bullets. My question is, why do you use CCI 41 primers instead of 400. From everyone being out of stock on the 41s I take it that they are a better primer. Thanks for the info
My understanding is that the #41s have a slightly thicker cup to reduce the possiblity of slam fires. And a bit more pressure and heat to assist in spherical powder ignition. I know it's been 5 months but new viewers may be asking the same question.
@Johnny’s Reloading Bench. Just found ur channel and subscribed. Been binge watching. 👍 I’m not following the measurements on your groups at all. Are those round targets 1 inch? The groups seem to be larger than what u have written on the paper. I’m not being argumentative was just curious. Other than this question, great channel. I’ve been loading for over 25 years and this is one of the best quality reloading channels I’ve come across.

20x30 is a good mat size. Load data and "Don't Blow Your Face Off" are good ideas.
Load data won't happen. I'm sure that would be considered as publishing load data. I don't know, but I don't want to go down that road.

I stopped at 25gr of H335, seems like a good load. I rarely go for a max load when the next lowest whole number of grains is accurate.
Hi Sir, has a 25gr charge in H335 served you well a year later? Are you shooting out of a bolt gun or AR?
@@Psalm144.1 No issues with the 25 gr load. All my 223/5.56 ammo is fired out of an AR15.

25gr of H335 with a 55gr FMJ is still a 223 load. 5.56 Nato load (M193) would be more like closer to 27gr
I have not used H335 for quite some time. H335 didn't seem to meter too well in my Dillon 550. I have found that the 55gr Hornady has the best accuracy with a full case which is above the "Max" loads in most manuals. Really enjoying the channel man. Keep it up
From the reloads I've produced, CFE 223 demonstrates the same high SD and ES in velocity as well in .308 Win when dealing with light bullets at the top end of the charge weights.
Assuming the following is the specifications for the ammo/rifle used:
.308 Win/7.62 nato 147 grain to 150 grain fmj with 22 to 23 inch barrel.
.223 Rem/5.56mm 55gr fmj with 20 inch barrel.
CFE 223 just seems to burn too slow than what I would like for .223 rem or .308 Win using light ball ammo. Heavier bullets might be a better choice for this powder since the charge will be reduced and slower burning powder tends to favor heavier bullets.
25.6 grn of h335 is all i load 223 55grn and same for my 140grn 6.5 grendel. One powder for both same powder charge got to love it LMFAO
How this video doesn’t have 15,000 likes is beyond me
I like the idea of several common cal. saami specs.
My Hornady manual lists the max load for 55 grain bullets at 23.2. This is the tenth edition.
2020 here, we sold the Bobs' out. Lol.
I might have to try some of that H335, im using BL-C2 right now. I think the mat is a good idea.
I have had good results with Bob's 55 gr FMJ and CFE223. Working up a load with Alliant Reloader 15 currently. I'd be in for a 20x30 mat.
Reloder 12 is great for 55gr bullets. I want 100% case filled, good velocity, below max psi, and 98-100% powder burned.
24x36 with JRB across the top and Sami specs would be awesome I would definitely buy one
All i use is cfe powder ( 223 pistol and blk) its great powder, i do use titegroup but only for 44 mag/spl 45 colt and 38spl
Another great video Johnny. I look forward to trying these bullets. I'd buy a mat. Don't blow your face off, is timeless good advice.
There's something wrong with the pattern recognition software in my head. The three best groups are in a curious shape ;)
I saw that too. looks like a "dangler". keeping it pg-13
Haha are you 16? I would’ve laughed when I was 16
30x20 and I like the cartridge dimension concept.
20x30 with a good portion of the outer edges not printed on. This would hopefully give us the option of cutting it down to fit. My bench is 24x60 (the Harbor Freight "hardwood" workbench) with additional reinforcement where I have my press mounted.
I get about 3100 FPS from my Anderson 16" with 25.5 gr. H335-- 2.230 OAL... I shoot the Hornady and Armscore 55 gr FMJ-BT
Yes my DPMS 223/5.56 like col of 2.230 or 2.240 in lenght.
Love your videos. Clever and funny.
In regards to the mat, we should find some of his more memorable quotes from him along with "Don't Blow Your Face Off". Sure we could find a few....
I would buy a mat that said don't blow your face off or had your logo and some favorite loads printed on it.
hey that bench mat idea is amazing with the measurement idea. A Plus..
Another awesome video sir. Keep up the good work and I really appreciate all of the work you put into these video.
Great idea about the mat
I think the mat is great.
Nice. And the mats are good..... I use a large green cutting mat. Sweet.
I used to use a printing blanket for a mat
I would buy one the Sami spec drawing will be great. But which cartridges would you put on it? .223 308 6.5 creedmore what else? & your logo
I use a tool box liner glued and stapled on my bench. I have been using oal of 2.20. Trying to decide if I want to lengthen it out a little.
Yeah I use col 2.210.
Im just getting into reloading and all of ur vid have been really helpful
Thanks for the coupon!!! Them bullets seem to shot good
Shoot darn auto type thing
I love Bob's bullets
What about putting common cartridge measurements? Like OAL, trim length and primer size maybe? Did you ever get these mats made?
Picked up some CFE 223 got to give it a whirl
Looking forward to the 8208/ARComp video!
Wonder how Bob's bullets would have done out of the old psa barrel. By the way was that a premium barrel by FN or the lower end version they have?
You need Norma 200 to push em really hard. It's magic powder for 223!
Man you save me so much time and money
Bobs' sells both Cannelure and non cannelure. Can you explain the difference in application?
Enjoying the videos.
Maybe I missed it, but what Vortex scope are you using and how do you like it? Running a few diamond backs on different rifles and liking them.
Keep up the solid work on the videos!
I may have to try H335. Good shooting.
Love your videos. I have one question, what is the name of the digital scales you use? Not the Franklin arsenal one.
Do you still use that 20 dollar scale i love mine i also had one same results but when trickling i found slower is better and stuck with my diamond pro scale it took alotof the velocity spred out down to a minimum
I'd buy a mat if you made them!
Dude.you are ROCKIN it!, love the video's,I can only dream and watch.......but it's better than nothing!!!...
Definitely would love the mat's haha
Mats a good idea at least a 20"x30" I would definitely buy one.
How do you think these loads would work from a bolt gun? Not loading 223 yet but want to start for bolt gun
Speaking of JRB mats, whatever happened to those?
I like the mat idea, I'd get one
@Johnny’s Reloading Bench. Just found ur channel and subscribed. Been binge watching. 👍 I’m not following the measurements on your groups at all. Are those round targets 1 inch? The groups seem to be larger than what u have written on the paper. I’m not being argumentative was just curious. Other than this question, great channel. I’ve been loading for over 25 years and this is one of the best quality reloading channels I’ve come across.
Ha!
"Don't blow your face off"
That would be awesome! And doubles as a permanent visual on screen disclaimer.
Can you bake powder coated bullets on those mats?
I wonder if you could make it so that we could put our own load data on the mat, with a magic marker . Just provide blank templates on the mat.
The 24x30 would work better for me with my old eyes, it would make it easier to see.
And the mat is a good idea. Why not cover the entire bench if you are gonna do it?
Entire bench would be sweet but I need to come up with a universal size!
Did you see pressure signs with 28.0 of cfe?
Would these loads work with soft point bullets?
I think you should try some of their lead bullets on bobs website as well like some of their .38 for the two 357 magnums you have.
I use them. I have 9mm, 357 (38), and rounds for 45acp.
This video had me rolling lol. Love it.
How did the brass look on your max charges?
I will show the brass for this range trip in the next video. I completely forgot!
Good stuff man.
Great video's. Keep them coming
So yah, (IMHO) it looks like the barrel is short for these bullets. My 16 incher is going to be a problem.
