I assume you’re a dude like many of us . That’s just life I think . It’s tough to be tough all the time . I’d say around mid 30s you get kinda numb to it . Good ,bad ,or indifferent I just keep going to make sure everyone around me is good . Realized a long time ago I don’t really need to be good or ok . I just do .
The song was written by Shane Keister, a Nashville and Memphis session player. The lyrics were written by his then wife Alice. I know because they are my aunt and uncle. I've always loved this song.
I always thought it was a cover of a hit song. Like Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. Such a good song it needs to be more well known. Especially with Jim singing it's beautiful.
According to IMDB, Jim Varney himself sang the song "Gee I'm Glad It's Raining" in a single take. Reportedly, when he finished performing the song, there wasn't a single dry eye on set.
It hurt so much seeing someone so gentle and kind feeling so hurt by those he trusted and cared about. I hate to say it but right now this song really hits home for me. I'm going through a rough time. But hey. It's supposed to rain the next few days. I might just have to go on a walk. Ya know what I mean? Great song and performance Jim. Rest in peace brother You'll never know how much joy you brought so many people

He is in character and this is a very emotional scene to play while in a character known to be goofy. Yet he somehow makes you wanna cry with how he plays this part. To little to late. Bawled my eyes out during this scene back in the 80s. Earnest was my hero and I couldn't believe somebody could be so mean to him. Jim hit me in the gut with that one.

I’ve seen all of the Ernest movies and Ernest goes to camp was always the hardest one to re-watch because of this song. Heard it the first time when I was 5 and I still get choked up hearing this at 36. Love you Ernest. RIP Jim Varney
I feel like Ernest fit these dramatic moments unexpectedly well with his natural close friend/uncle/neighbor-ish aura and Jim's personal love of Shakespeare. Nice to be alive when this man made an impact on the world.
Ernest was such a nice guy who worked hard at his job and cared about a group of misfits when no one else would. He had such modest aspirations of being a counselor at a youth summer camp. When the camp closed, he list his home, his job, and his dreams. It was crushing to see him finally lose it and break down the way he did after putting on the brave face. I watched this when it was in theatres when I was 9 years old. I still get emotional seeing him break down and then hearing him sing this diddy. "What they wanted was a hero. All I needed was a friend." Gets me every time. RIP Jim Varney
When I first heard this song, it reminded me of "When Somebody Loved Me" from Toy Story 2(in which Jim voiced Slinky), which is also a very emotional song.
A 5 year old should ever be able relate to this song, but I did back then. Still do to this day. What does walking in the rain and living alone have in common? No one knows unless you tell them.
He had actually considered a career in country music at one point. I'm glad he stuck to acting, but this song proves he would have been a powerhouse in the music industry.
