Linear Algebra II: Oxford Mathematics 1st Year Student Lecture - James Maynard
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 янв 2020
- Our latest student lecture features the first lecture in the second term (1st Year) introductory course on Linear Algebra from leading Oxford Mathematician James Maynard.
We are making these lectures available to give an insight in to the student experience and how we teach. All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
You can also watch many other student lectures via our main Student Lectures playlist (also check out specific student lectures playlists): • Oxford Mathematics Stu... - Наука

@@o_sch you do realize linear algebra is not algebra 1, or algebra 2, for that matter? It is an algebra that is introduced at the very least at the college level, and it is higher upper in the mathematics world than calculus. Just imagine retiring as a registered nurse, using all your income/salary to pay rent and tax without any good investment or means of extra cash, tending to leave your profession/job that has been part of you for many years with no good funds. How will you cope?
That's why we need to plan ourselves via making extras in all we do because depending on paycheck that can give us our comfort and peace till we die is not guaranteed
This is actually what most families are going through, tax and rents takes almost what they got monthly, leaving them with no savings
I'm a nurse and I saw all this coming, so l've planned myself so I engaged in forex trading, little I know about the business though but so far so good, Forex trading has been my very means of savings lately while my salary goes for bills and utilities

This time 45 years ago I was a maths student, and lectures were delivered in this way, but with blackboards. Nowadays, it's difficult to understand why the lecture material is not posted online, thus leaving the lecturer free to give explanations where necessary and to do problems. Most students can't listen, write and learn at the same time. Lecture time is time wasted that could be more valuably spent actually learning.
Oh yes, so true. When will they understand that?
Make students scratch their heads on problems, and THEN clarify what needs to. So much time and energy wasted :(
Very interesting perspective! You took words out of my mouth 🙈

Not true. I find linear algebra one of the most easy to grasp areas of math. It mostly just visual understanding and most of the math is basic arithmetic (for an early linear algebra course). Though most professors throw a bunch of equations on the board without explaining the elegance of what linear algebra is.
Christopher nah its ok, it ruins the fun but I happen to need this message. IM TAKING LINEAR ALGEBRA NEXT YEAR FML

@Christopher How am I stating that I am smart? I think I am quite the opposite actually. You're not smart if you understand linear algebra because it's such a visually fine tuned field. That's all I was saying. Out of all the courses I have taken throughout my degree, linear algebra is NOT one I would boast about online.
He might be the only one understanding what he's saying.
Yea, I'm surprised he works at Oxford, I've seen better instructors at junior colleges... I'm sure he's really smart and educated but presenting and teaching is a skill of it's own. He looks young though so maybe he will improve...

Yeah, I've got to say comparing some of the recorded lectures here vs. MIT OCW it's night and day.

20 years old. Flunked math all high school.

what I learned through this video is Oxford has many white boards lol
hina giku whoa i think so
I'm still wondering how long he could keep pushing them up for, seems never endless supply
DenisK i think there’s someone in the back who’s job it to clean them off so they appear blank evrytime they come back around
Sabino Rodriguez Actually I thought about it and a more plausible explanation is, on the back of each board theres a strip (probably on the bottom) of eraser material that wipes the board clean. I highly doubt the University (full of intellegent individuals) would hire someone to perform such a mundane task. But that's just my opinion, I could very well be wrong.
DenisK in all honesty your most likely right, i just thought it would be funny if someone’s job was actually to clean white boards 😭😂

What's funny is that there is actually no discussion on the topics, the professor is writing stuff down and everybody is copying it.
That's the purpose of a lecture but don't worry they get to be more interactive in supervision which are like class for 5 - 8 students with a prof.
@@yuno2512 Okay so that makes sense now.
I prefer this method for actual knowledgable teachers to avoid redundant discussions. My teachers, however most barely know what they teach. They only know topics and discuss it with a class that is barely introduced to the topic resulting in nothing but waste of time. During discussion, the teacher provides no new input and students can not either. This also does not change. The top scorers study by themselves thus giving the teacher an incorrect impression. Its crazy what I have seen.
@@adiadiadi333 That is true, however a class is useful only if it can be interactive. Don't you think it is not possible to understand topics in detail without a discussion ??
