  • In Luv Subbin Episode 280, we troubleshoot our faithful, yet crappy, RV Flooded Lead Acid Battery. To do that, we use our Victron Battery Monitor. We determine if it's still good or if it has finally died. At the end, we reveal what we decided to replace it with. Did we go with lead acid, AGM or lithium?

    Wish there were easy to understand videos like this one about all kinds of those new-fangdangled systems in the new RV's! Seeing how to use the multimeter and the converter/charger trick was great. I learnt quite a bit today!

      Thanks so much for watching and the super nice comment. We're always glad when someone finds our videos useful or entertaining. Thankfully, our RV is a 2002 so we have very few of those new-fangdangled things.

    Awesome video as always! I went through a power converter failure before and the trickle charger saved our trip. Replaced with a future proof converter that will automatically switch between AGM and Lithium. Our AGM’s are ~6 years old too and I expect we will go lithium at the start of next camping season. Look forward to your next installment on converting to Lithium. 👍

      Thanks for watching! Yes, we are much like you. When our converter dies three years ago we looked to the future and ensured it was "lithium capable".

    Betsy and I have been away and are catching up! We always enjoy your videos! I’m confused on a point. Your charger is labeled as only 1.25A which should take around 100 hours or about 4 days to fully charge a completely depleted battery. The fact that your charge cycle terminated after only a day is indicative of greatly reduced capacity and it doesn’t seem surprising it self-discharged so quickly. A great way of testing your battery is to carefully dip the DVM probes in each open cell and check the cell-to-cell voltage (rinse the probes well afterwards). I’ll bet you have one cell that has developed a plated short with very low voltage. You might be able to recover it with a desulfation cycle on a smart charger (unlikely, really) but lithium is definitely the best choice! Be sure to regulate the charging voltage through your 7-way (DC-DC charger) to avoid damaging your alternator, truck battery, or just blowing a fuse with the new lithium battery. Safe travels!

      Thanks for watching! I would probably have done more in-depth exploration like you mentioned if it had not been 5 1/2 years old. Also, as you catch up on our videos you'll see that we did indeed have a problem with the charging and the truck. Your advice is spot on!

    One of the first things I check is the battery water level. Also, a de-sulfating device can help restore the battery.

      @LuvSubbin  2 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching! Good points - I always carry some distilled water with me to add as necessary. The de-sulfating is a good idea but I don't think my charger has one. Plus, at 5 1/2 years old it was about time...

    Great video guys, but wouldn't have been a lot faster to test the battery by simply taking it to your local auto parts store and have them check it almost immediately as to whether it could hold a charge or not? I'm looking forward to watching your next video regarding the change over to lithium batteries as we have a 2005 Classic with two lead-acid batteries and want know if it is really worth it. Best regards....

      Thanks for watching! It might have been easier but I actually enjoy doing all of my own maintenance and troubleshooting. Plus, I am leery of taking my 5 1/2 year old battery to a place that sells batteries... As I have been a proponent of lead acid for 22 years, we hope to provide some good content on the conversion.
