- The Nevada National Security Site (N2S2 or NNSS), known as the Nevada Test Site (NTS) until August 23, 2010,[2] is a United States Department of Energy (DoE) reservation located in southeastern Nye County, Nevada, about 65 miles (105 km) northwest of the city of Las Vegas. Formerly known as the Nevada Proving Grounds, the site was established on January 11, 1951 for the testing of nuclear devices, covering approximately 1,360 square miles (3,500 km2) of desert and mountainous terrain. Nuclear weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site began with a 1-kiloton-of-TNT (4.2 TJ) bomb dropped on Frenchman Flat on January 27, 1951. Over the subsequent four decades, over one thousand nuclear explosions were detonated at the NTS. Many of the iconic images of the nuclear era come from the NTS. NNSS is operated by Mission Support and Test Services, LLC.
During the 1950s, the mushroom clouds, from the 100 atmospheric tests, could be seen from almost 100 mi (160 km) away. The city of Las Vegas experienced noticeable seismic effects, and the mushroom clouds, which could be seen from the downtown hotels, became tourist attractions. St. George, Utah, received the brunt of the fallout of above-ground nuclear testing in the Yucca Flats/Nevada Test Site. Westerly winds routinely carried the fallout of these tests directly through St. George and southern Utah. Marked increases in cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, bone cancer, brain tumors, and gastrointestinal tract cancers, were reported from the mid-1950s through 1980.A further 921 nuclear tests were carried out underground.

They did this close enough to Las Vegas that many of the tests were felt there... I felt many of them. I am only 44... so consider that ;)
Yea it was a trip... even in 6th grade... (born in 76) we would have regular tests all the time... and felt it in our classrooms... in the Vegas Valley. No Joke.
And all the fallout ...
messed up them even doing that where we live
Try bering in bikini
I grew up in Vegas, I remember when the underground tests were being done. I'm only 40
That is one of my favorite documentaries so far. Thank you for your time and effort in bringing these to RUclips. For everyone who enjoys this channel.... Please donate a few dollars to help with cost associated with bringing this to us. Thank you.
My father and I both worked there... Place is a freakin time capsule.

Awesome channel great work!
I still like watching your videos in 2020
Interesting, i didnt know the us and the russians worked together in the late 80s on under ground nuclear detection. Cool
My father, US Navy, was stationed officially in the Philippines, but secretly in the Marshall Islands. My uncle, US Army, was in Nevada, one of the guys who ran out with the Geiger counter. All it proved was that hanging out close to nuclear blasts is bad for your health.
They qualify for special benefits.
How close did your uncle get and what kind of readings did he say he got?
Stop swallowing spit so loud 😂
Hi i love your channel 🤗
We should start testing again.
Only if they have public exhibitions so we can all see what we're getting for our tax dollars...
Keep em comin!
The downwinders thank you for all the fallout
I don't think he understood your sarcasm.....
Quite.. and for this absolute hot can of propaganda lies and cover-up.. fabulous work, but it’s only going to affect ruminants!
Even though I do enjoy your videos mate, they're all brilliant, what was a bit disturbing was the fella who said "I feel very proud when I saw the effects of my work..." when talking about his involvement in the 'Sedan' test. That worries me when people feel that way about the most destructive weapons ever invented.
Well it's only natural that someone would feel proud of the results of a project that they probably put months and years of their life into. I think you're trying to unfairly ascribe malice to their statement.
Who wouldn't be proud of such an accomplishment? Much of what was learned from those tests ALSO led to the discovery of the many GOOD things that came out of nuclear research.
Day Zimmermann, a still privately held company, was skyrocketed into nuclear energy and safety maintenance, gaining a lifelong military contract at the Nevada nuclear weapons testing site.
Billions have been made on the backs of 18 year old military human test subjects and Downwinders.
Dad worked at Mercury. Passed from radiation.
Any info regarding the declassification of the operation "Die Bitches"?

Wow 19 billion was spent on Yucca Mountain and it’s still the law that it will be the repository for high level waste. Yucca mountain is on the test site but no mention of it. Politics are still very much in play at the NNSS site (Nevada Test Site) that’s a shame!!!
Wow new technologies and industries formed from all this
The Test Site was used as a training area for the Desert One raid to rescue our hostages in Iran. Don’t ask me how I know that.
How do you know that

Damn!......you beat me to it! 👍 for you.
Then why did you bring it up if you don't want to be asked?
Because he, she, or it wants you to believe they know something you don't and that makes them feel special...

Better to take responsibility for yourself, by yourself, rather than shit on someone else's doorstep, like what happened in the Marshall Islands.
You would be the guy to shit somewhere else rather than on your own property, wouldn't you? That's a disgusting trait.
Russian rocket to Nevada test site will save Europe
No. It would inadvertently flatten Europe.
First of all it's a hoot of lies about the radiation test on animals. Second, hats off to American War junkies for wasting so much of our tax dollars on your war games, that to date haven't done one Anerican any good except Cancer, if you can call that "good". How do you say... exercise in futility?? Great documentary though, well done and eye opening.
I guess you missed the fact we never had a WW 3...that was prevented because the results of the use of atomic weapons were too onerous for both sides. That was the outcome of the nuclear arms race. As for cancer rates - they have declined since 1930. You can read all about it in the research paper, "Long-Term Trends in Cancer Mortality in the United States, 1930-1998." Your criticisms are the knee-jerk reactions of someone who is uninformed and simply believes their assumptions are true.
@@buckhorncortez excuse me sir, but the countless Americans that have died from cancer out numbers the entire population of America in the 70's. Perspective is everything. how ashamed the creators must be in there profession of this industry?
Why should they be ashamed? Information had to be gathered one way or the other. You need to look at the state of the world at the time. The soviets were going to do it regardless so we had to do it.
@@patrickspringer6534 I am only talking about a hand full here. the creators. and if they were not ashamed then god help them.
we have the power to destroy hundreds of planets, or destroy the earth 1000 times over. the creators of it must have ben ashamed and terrified about that?
@@breakalegfpv9532For the original creators of atomic weapons, it was a physics problem that was a race against the Germans It then became a race with the Russians who had a parallel atomic weapons development program. Many of the physicists working on the original atomic bomb had great concerns about creating the weapons and the spreading the knowledge of nuclear physics. However, the deterrent value of the weapons has been proven as no nuclear war ever happened - don't you think they should also be proud of that?
@@buckhorncortez Atomic bombings of Hiroshima ?
@@breakalegfpv9532 They brought an end to the war and allowed the Allies to avoid a land invasion of Japan which would've resulted in a larger loss of life than what the atomic bombings did. So yes, they can be proud of that.

I definitely know the name Walter conkrite but to my shock and surprise I heard a name of a long passed away friend Bob considine. I knew him really well. He was a member of my legion Post 229 in Utica New York. I've had many conversations with Bob in the late 90s early 2000s and he verified that he witnessed a lot of the tests one of the biggest subjects I had with Bob considine was the atomic Annie atomic Cannon film man in the site ..he had some great historic stuff that he knew and witnessed firsthand in the Nevada test site. My father was very close friends with Bob.
Any information about how far the energy pulses have traveled through space at this time?
They are not that big…
It's irrelevant...
Nukes are a TINY fart in the wind compared to other events that happen on our planet, and in outer space, on a daily basis.
These scientists were like kids blowing up plastic model boats in swimming pools with firecrackers!
No. They were like adults learning how to create nuclear weapons.
I took a tour. It's surreal to walk out on Frenchman Flat and Yucca Flat. To be next to huge subsidence craters that almost look like little canyons that could swallow buildings they're so steep when you drive next to them, such as the one for shot Hutch which was ~120kt located at 37°08'22.1"N 116°05'17.9"W
Proud of Sudan wasn't that classed as a failure because it hit the water table so broke the surface and radiated a large area 🤔
I grew up in white pine county, northeastern nevada, and as a child in elementary school can recall the tears. We were evacuated from the three story school, to the playground. Thereupon. We knelt on the asphalt of the playground, and we're instructed to cover our heads with our arms. Then wait until the test was conducted. Then the teachers informed us to get up, but Do Not look at the mushrooms cloud...well, what do children do when you tell them Not to do something? Yeah, we all looked!. That happened until 1968, yo my recollection. I'm enjoying these programs now as a grandmother, to learn now, what I didn't know then.
Looking at a Mushroom Cloud isn't harmful, unless you were close enough, and looked early enough, to burn your retinas from the bright light. Otherwise, it was completely harmless to look at them.
I'm sure the teachers at that time didn't know a whole lot about Nuclear Explosions, and took extra caution "just in case".
If you would have been happening to be staring right at the exact spot that the bomb detonated, right as it detonated, it MAY have caused some temporary flash blindness if you were close enough to it.
Wow that would be fun job! I mean, I don't need any more rads than the desert rocks already --- but dang that would be fun!
It certainly was, I worked on down hole and tunnel shots in the late 70's and early 80's.

They should have done it in North Carolina.
America had a 1 Gt nuke before the Russia s we’re done testing we just stopped testing MT weapons after Castle Bravo was 2.5 x bigger than expected and fucked up our testing g grounds in the Marshall Islands so congress put a cap on the total yield of thermonuclear weapon tests the Russians castle bravo came when the dropped tsar bomba that was one of the least efficient but biggest bomb ever because it was allegedly surrounded by lead in a effort to half its grind after the maker got scared by the though of a .1 GT weapon
TheUS did not need such large tonnage. When it was determined that missiles would be one of the delivery methods, the warheads were going to be limited in size so accuracy became the dominate factor.
Russian rocket to Nevada test site will save Europe
No. The U.S. never had a workable 1Gigaton nuclear weapon, or one in the works. It was determined that a weapon that large had little military value when it came to war, and there was never a need to design one.
Actually, the Tsar Bomba was one of the cleanest and most efficient large yield nuclear weapons ever detonated.
