I'm retired from the US Air Force. Throughout a twenty-plus year career, from the 1960s to the 1990s, I always admired Russian aviation but kept my mouth shut in fear of being labeled a "commie". Today I'm in my 70s and don't rightly give a crap what anyone thinks...planes are planes and pilots are pilots..my love and respect to all. I'm thankful for life experience that allows me to visualize feet vs meters and MPH vs knots so call it what you will.
i always have this question on why aviation comunication uses old imperial in feet when we are learning metric metres and Kms in school. why dont they use the new metric measurement so its easier for young generation and dont have to keep converting from feet to metres or Kms
when i see Yak 40 i remember BAC 1-11 used to fly in Fijis National airline Air Pacific with entry from the back and 2 engines at the rear
Stalingrad...makes me remember the movie Enemy at the Gates and Battle of Stalingrad in 1942 where the Russian sniper Vasily Zaitsev killed more than 200 enemy with his rifle...one of the best films i watched during WW2....any way thanks for your stories on Russian planes
It's certainly OK to admire Soviet Engineers even if they were commies.
It ok to admire their pilots too. They did build the only comparable air force to the west and in some ways still do. I'm certainly not a communist. I'd more align myself with the John Birch Society. There is nothing better than to give credit to the individual who produces or performs beneficial things and tasks. Supporting an ideology is entirely different. Thank you for your service sir. I recently lost a life long friend who was about to be eligle for retirement next year who devoted the entirety of his adult life to the Air Force.
I remember In Top-Gun they admitted the best plane was Soviet. Even though t was a fictitious Mig-28 lol
As a Russian who lives in Europe, it was the first time anyone has ever mentioned the smell of Soviet buildings! Like its ridiculous that its always been there and has this very very specific smell that puts you automatically into some sort of Russian atmosphere. Who’s been there, knows what I’m on about😀
St. Petersburg and Moscow are truly beautiful cities and very clean as well.
Does it smell like authoritarian repression?
I've never been to Russia but a friend of mine has.
@@davidyoung9561incredible story
“The Soviet Vin Diesel” had me in absolute stitches!
more like Russian Jesse🤣🤣

... he only drives a maximum of a quarter of mile mind though lol! 😮🤣
I was trying to figure out how the taxi driver was "Soviet." He probably wasn't even born when the Soviet Union ceased to exist.
He was gone in 60 секунда.
Fast and furiously..
I found it so funny when the lady you were sat next to started taking photos of you vlogging but then all of a sudden started listening intently. Great video- really enjoyed it!
😂😂
she was very pretty
She seemed to be into noel 😂 curling her hair, the way she looked at him
Shes learning the English language 🤭🤭
she was with him
15:31 look at that beautiful mosaic! What a gem. Baldy would make a trip around the world for that one.
Yep, he'd love the old Soviet airport, the ticket kiosk babushka and definitely the mosaic.
U arent kidding bald would be in his glory 😂
I came to the comments just for the mosaic lol
@@markwarwick2920 we have a lot of that. In the former USSR
In Russian language there are multiple ways of saying "goodbye". Two of those phrases could be translated as "Good luck!". I think this is why stewardess told you "good luck" but she actually meant "goodbye".
@Александр Иванов I think he's absolutly wright for this is the case when a certain phrase has a direct and figurative meaning. In russian "Udachi!" (Good luck) means also God bye. I think in english it has the same two meanings. Meanwile Thank you in english means in russian Blagodariu' (i give you a boon). But you can also (and more often) say - Spasibo wich means - God save you.
Правильно
@Александр Иванов хватит инстранцев обманывать, человек правильно говорит: Удачи это досвидание и пожелание удачи в одном флаконе
Not exactly. Udachi (Good luck) you can say in russian in additional to good bye. You can say somth like Poka - Udachi. That means Bye and good luck.
As a wish additional in your trip or you business. it's like a phrase similar to "best wishes" but in regular life.
The silhouette of the Yak on that second take-off was brilliant.
Loved watching the shadow fall away.
My grandfather used to be a radio-engineer on IL-18 :)
I think Noel said "Vologda" seventy-two times in this video, he clearly likes the word Volgda.
I was wondering how many times he said Vologda, Vologda, Vologda, Vologda …
vOlogda, not volOgda ))
@@yaronsteinbuch3956 Me too! 🤣
Hes does this all the time, he founds his word which he then overuses for the rest of the video
Haha OMG yeah I'd never heard of Vologda before (despite being part Russian myself). Noel overusing the word Vologda has made up for 30 years of me never hearing it haha.
I was also "delivered brand new" in December, 1976 but I still have a few months of being 44.
April 1976. I'm 45 just like the plane😉

But Josh commented 2 days ago 🧐
The Russians definetely must love their aviation history!!! They built really beautiful, sleek and elegant aircraft!!! Awesome Yak-40 video there Noel!!! / Regards from Cyprus :))
No they didn't had some of the ugliest aircraft nevermind aeroflat has killed the most passengers of anybody
Great instalment from Bald and Boarding.
Why could I picture this as the second name of this channel 😂
Ohhhhhhh harsh
Hahah exactly what I thought when he entered the hotel 😂
I flew on one of these YAKs on Air Moldova 20 years ago in Business class from Heathrow to Chisinau. I cannot comment on seats because - I was on one of the two business class seats which were old Pan Am seats which were bolted in the front of the plane. Meals were quite good and when I asked for a brandy I was given an entire bottle of Moldovan brandy.
Бренди "Белый аист"?
Noel, you have quickly become the most interesting aviation RUclipsr, period. All of the other people just doing business clsss reviews get a bit old.
Yep, Totally agree. Noel's content, editing and production values are through the roof! 100%
@@markbennett2170 Hardly. You need to explore more content.
I agree. Noel is the most interesting YT aviation vlogger I've found in a while. His discovery of the delicious overlooked corners of world aviation make binge watching his well-researched and edited pieces time well-spent. I'll be back for more.
That was an amazing landing. Pilot clearly knows his plane 👍
The lady at 29:30 onwards was giggling while picturing herself on Noel's vlog lol
Quite funny moment I would say :-)
I was going to comment about that as well. I know that lady had her video camera on her phone while Noel was talking.😁
She's really bad at surreptitiously trying to take a picture
As an American who has lived over in Russia for over a year, the younger folks are usually curious when they hear English speakers and I bet you she was recording it to try and listen to later to see if she could translate.
🔥
The Russian for the direct translation as “good luck “, can be used as yet another way to say farewell
Or even, at least in American English as “best of luck “. To which, if that phrase is used then people usually reply “thanks “
@Winter snow Owen ...I mean, you don't want people thinking you're leprechauns and yet you say stuff like this...
Just the good old "удачи вам". It's just a way to say "bye" in a polite way.
Loving those Soviet Adventures!
Wish you could have joined me!
Yes that would be cool, a combined trip report of Josh Cahill n Noel Philips...
Marc
Good to see you everywhere Josh..
Josh, I am surprised you’ve not put your comment in all caps using over dramatic words.
Drama queen!
Taking this flight was a timely decision, the root from Moscow to Izhevsk (Yak 42 from one of your recent episodes) is now served by the same company but with a recently acquired B737-800. Concerning the thrust reversal on the low-approach-speed Yak 40, actually the central engine has this mechanism while the other two are set to idle just before touchdown.
I loved the Soviet-ness of the whole trip... Although way too many cars on the road, billboard ads, clean storefront windows, and actual goods in the shops to recreate the real USSR feel (thank goodness!). Then there's the whole issue of videoing the airport; Soviet handlers would never allow a camera within a mile of the airport! I loved this episode. Thanks!
i think we've quickly gone back to that era
Reminds me of many a happy hour flying in Tupelov 154 etc years ago. one iced up over Uzbekistan and lumps of ice hit the windows! Aeroflot blue bird was what we called the greasy grey chicken served on every flight. Oh and you didn't mess with the flight attendants, Olympic hammer throwers mostly.
"there are women in Russian villages...
they will stop the elephant at full gallop,
and they will tear off his trunk! "(C)
they ensure the safety of the flight! )))
Why do they have to be big butch hammer throwers. Every woman can be beautiful maybe she makes good peroshki.

Damn those soviet turbofans sound increeeedible
Talking about the smell of Soviet-era buildings, I definitely understand! I work in one of those style buidings. It's just....unique.
Wonder if it was a chemical in the paint or wood finish?
I know exactly what you mean. There's a really specific smell and I've only smelt it once outside of a Soviet country and it took me right back there. I don't even know how to describe it, you just know it when you smell it.
I was born in Ukraine, I can literally smell everything in this video 😂
I flew in a Tupolev 154 back in 1984. Great ride! Great sound!
Old times
Thank you sooooo much for telling us...
I grew up in 1960's Europe - this really took me back - thanks!
24:05 Soviet Vin Diesel 😂 the way he drove off after dropping Noel outside the terminal 🤣
What a treat to see inside Russia like this... fantastic video and how cool to experience an old Soviet aircraft (and the sound of the engines... like the old 707's and 727's.. modern planes just don't sound the same... boring). Thank you... keep on with your travels... we live vicariously through you! 🙂
Fast and Furious Driver. 😂. Squealing tires. 😂
The Soviet Vin Diesel no less!
The child-like joy you get out of a rare aircraft is really my favorite part of these vids
You're one lucky man to try many aircraft especially the rare ones! You deserve to stay in RUclips for many more years to come for more virtual adventures with us! BTW, nice Russian speaking!
Noel needs to practice his russian more, I enjoyed the trip though
@@raynorthedge5722 I was so surprised to see him speaking and understanding russian it was super cool
My first ever flight as a child in 1975 was on Soviet era airliner. It was the first time my parents had ever flown as well. A Tupolev TU-154. Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, London Gatwick to Burgas on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.
Rather attractive Olga beside you on your second flight.... One has to wonder how profitable are those flights? Three jets for 40-odd passengers..??!
I guess they are subsidized by the region or by the central gov., unfortunately, economically Vologda is somewhere at the bottom of Russian regions
Yeah shes hot 😍
Noel new mail order wife....lol....just kidding bud
You beat my to it I notice how attractive she looked and the look she gave towards the camera very nice
And, of course, not at all a member of the FSB… 😹

"TF is this wanker doin?" (in Russian) (probably)

Keep up the great content Noel. Look forward to watch this video
Sunday evenings with coffee and Noel's videos. Perfect
Nice video! Funniest part for me is surely the second flight, watching the lady next to you (29:05) first looking confused and then filming you filming :D
The view from the plane is amazing and so much history too another great video mate
Newer A380's less than 10 years old are retiring , yet there are antiques still flying.... Crazy!
yeah, it’s crazy, isn’t it? And I bet if travel industry has picked up again but landing slots will be made a rare thing at some large airports, they will all get back to the idea “hey why don’t we fly a single aircraft with 500 people onboard instead of 3 flights with 150 each, wait….”
I am from Agra Uttar Pradesh India
Your video amazing
Great work done by you
Keep it up 👍👍👍
Really enjoying these slightly longer video Noel. great work :-)
What a splendid airplane, pilot loved their gentle touchdowns too.
Loved it. Amazing video. Your camera is so sharp and clear, it was almost like being there. It was like going back in time. Thanks for making this video. I am disabled and can't really come close to doing a trip like that, so I am so appreciative of the internet and RUclipsrs like you that take me there virtually. I'll check your site to see what else soviet you have.
Amazing content as always, keep up the good work! Really like these a bit longer videos and that you show the places you are staying at!
In the USSR, this plane, due to the fact that it consumed a lot of fuel, was called a "cigarette butt". In Russian it is "okurok".)
Cigarette butt
@@margaretorango8444 yes, yes, a half-smoked, smoldering cigarette ...
Cigarette end:)
"Окурком" его называли не из-за большого расхода топлива, а из-за малой длинны фюзеляжа и длинного дымового шлейфа при работе двигателей на взлётном режиме.
Из-за большого расхода топлива ему дали второе прозвище- "истребитель керосина".
Stop smoking 😅
“Let’s go fly to VOLOGDA, so we can walk the streets of VOLOGDA, and fly on a yak 40 to VOLOGDA, look at this cool tank guarding VOLOGDA, and stay in this hotel in VOLOGDA. VOLOGDA was nice!” 😂
Super fun video. Loved that huge smile ☺ at the beginning of the vid. Your ❤ love of aviation surely came through.
The lady next to Noel @ 29:50 taking pictures of him recording himself. 🤣🤣🤣 Priceless.
Haha, she seemed to be amused to be on his video
And the way she looked at the camera but she is very attractive
@@benthwaites381 Honestly I'm happy to see someone somewhat amused, most people look somewhat suspicious or annoyed. I'd be really interested to see what would be going on, even if I didn't follow this (and some other Aviation) channel and had no idea who Noel was I'd probably still ask what the video was for.

As ever, great review, Noel. Never flown on a Yak 40, but I'm grateful I had the chance to fly on a TU-154 & the mighty Il-62 when they were still in service.
Thanks for the report.I just loved the experience, it's seems that the YAK-40 is not that bad even after all these years

Oh, I remembered the 80-90s, when I flew a lot on the Yak-40 both in the Russian North and in central Russia ! A great retro trip !
I was on Yak-40 once, few years ago, but it was a chartered flight. It's cool to see, that they still operated on regular flights.
The taxi driver back to the airport was amazing. That was a real highlight and when he drove off.
Nice one Noel.

Love these old school airports, so different and full of character, so often missing in the huge airports today
I agree all newer airports seem to look similar with shops, fast food outlets and cafes.
Hi Noel I love your content about now couple of years now I applaud your improved by short 10 mins to now 30 mins videos keep up the progress high to Rachel and the kids

Thank you Noel, for this little adventure. Half a seatbelt:)!! I like the fact that you can poke fun at and also admire this old plane. I would be right there with you noticing the same things.
Lol. The flight attendant coming around just after you explain you’ve been scolded.
Yeah! I was shouting at the screen "Noel, she's right behind you!!"
Dear Noel! I always love your Videos (especially when you travel to the former USSR as I am Swiss living in Perm) There is Krasavia Airlines still uses the Yak42 and flies here on some domestic routes with it. Some. Till around 2015 there were still TU134s flying Oil workers from Perm to Naryan Mar. (was always fun when they approached over the City centre onto RWY23. Winderful sound:-)) Looking forward to see more Videos!
the russian description 'the ciggarette butt' cracked me up, made me think how apt for various cars not always old either, very enjoyable video.
Your trips are always entertaining, especially the ones in seldom seen parts of the world! Hope to see you on that UTair 767-200 soon!
Bald & Bankrupt would approve 😆
I love your videos! So fun flying and traveling around in view of the current pandemic. You and Benjamin (Bald) should do videos together, would be fun seeing the passion for all things Soviet from both of you. You would point out the cool Soviet planes while he will go after Babushkas.
Bald will find shit even where it is not. And if he doesn’t find it, he will shit himself. Disgusting type!

oh it was thrilled to watch this amzing videofootage because of it had remembered me on times when I had used many times Yak 40 of Czechoslovak airlines which was very much used for domestic flights in former Czechoslovakia... Last time I flaw on it ( CSA) on 4.July 1990 from Prague to Bratislava..I can not forget this flight...Thx....
I flew in the Yak 40 in the late 70s Moscow to St Petersburg (Leningrad during that time). We were on approach to SP and had to abort approach as another plane was also on approach and we were too near each other. A little scary.
really enjoyable video.. the T34 tank was awsome.. interestingly if you ever get a chance to visit Poland again, there are 2 of them on the main road entering Wroclaw. We also found a fantastic private military + air museum in Swidnica with few Migs and Yaks parked up, Swindica is just few miles west of Wroclaw.. worth a visit also
Another super video Noel! Not yet had an opportunity to fly any soviet aircraft but would really like to one day! The old-skool feel is so cool in the 21st Century! Keep up the great content and stay safe. All the best!
Noel great to see some mini tours
What a lovely trip to the capital of milk products of the Soviet Union :) Hope you got some cheap butter and high quality kefir while there!
"They are still using meters for altitude, I would expect that they had converted to feet by now"
Why would they? They are probably waiting for the rest of the world to convert to meters, which would be the natural thing to do.
Believe me, they do both!
In some parts of Russia (controlled by Moscow, Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Yekaterinburg, Kotlas, Rostov-Don, Samara, S. Peterburg, Syktyvkar, Tymen) we use feets already (from 3 of December 2020). So, I believe, this flight was on feet for pilots. However, for passengers they may still use meters as most of them are Russians. and I do not think that most of us are able convert feets to meters instantly.
@@toriyshaov2245 Well, I use "1 meter = 3.3 feet" or "1 meter = 3 feet" for less accurate purposes.
I think a pilot should be able to do that.
And frankly I am amazed how backward the systems in aviation generally are.
I meen feet, pounds, knots, AM radio, that is all just insane.
on air france they announce the altitude to the passengers in metres, because the passengers dont understand feet. The pilots and atc are absolutely using feet, it is the same in Russia. Everyone says good luck in Russia.
I played some gigs in Leningrad in 1991. When we went back in 1992 to play again it was called St. Petersburg. Such a beautiful city and people. The Venice of the North.
Ah Noel...You're like an excited school boy let loose on your own!! Thrilled with the planes and tank and then stocking up on crisps and beer for the hotel! Priceless😁
Thank you Noel for another great trip report. I envy you for taking all those unusual flights n unusual / historical planes.
I had the privilege to fly on a Yak40 back in 1974. Aircraft D-BOBA. From Hamburg to Düsseldorf. The German regional airlines General Air/Hadag Air operated 5 Yak40s for a year. But they were too uneconomical n they sold them off quickly...
Furthermore, I flew on an Ilyushin18 back in 1992 from Bremen to Lisbon n return. Airline was The Berline, Berlin. It was terrible loud on that 3.5 hours flight...
Thanks again n keep up yr great work.
Greetings from Bremen, Germany
Marc
Noel, thank you for this amazing video. First I'd like to say, the name of the city of Vologda has emphasys on the first syllable, it sounds like vOlogda. Yak-40 is one of my favourite soviet aircrafts too. In the eighties I had flown on it many times. Three Ivchenko turbofans sound really cool, but they are too voracious. Fuel consumption at cruising is about 1100 kg per hour (~2500 pounds). Aviation people consider that Yak-40 is most fuel ineffective aircraft among small turbofans. About altitude in Russia. Russia uses feet and RVSM since 2011. But air traffic controllers in any regional airports continue using meters. Also flying and cabin crews often say altitude and speed in meters and km/h to passengers, even though they work with feet and NM.
Awesome report Noel, love these off the beaten path flights! Well done!👌😁
Wow! It's like going back in time! Another world.
Beautiful Aircraft!
Feel like I've come full circle. First video i ever watched from you, you were on a Yak 40 with Motor Sich!
The Vologda Airport looked a lot like Pulkovo Airport Leningrad in 1987. Landing in Pulkovo Airport from a flight from Frankfurt at that time, you were greeted. by a group of military personnel with guns pointing to the sky while exiting the plane onto the tarmac to the terminal itself. My recollection is the interior of the Pulkovo Airport terminal was 1940s vintage with mainly pale pink marble covering most of its interior. Seeing Pulkovo Airport in this video now was a shocker for me, since I was last there in 1987.
When I saw the YAK 40 it was a trip down memory lane. The first aeroplane I ever flew on was a British Caledonian BAC 1-11 from Gatwick to Tangiers in July 1971. The rear stairway, engines at the back and the all-flying tail plane. Thanks for bringing it all back Noel.
Thanks for sharing!
Man you really bring some memories back. I used to live and work in Vologda for two years and just moved out of there around the time you took that video. You were absolutely right about the airport - it's like going back in time to the USSR. And I absolutely have to say this: you booked one of the shittiest hotels in town, it's been up for sale for quite some time now. I also took the same flight to Saint Petersburg and Moscow several times. Glad you got the chance to experience that. Actually the neighbor city of Cherepovets has a very modern small airport and the local airline thereis a subdivision of Severstal steel works. They have modern CRJ and Sukhoi SSJ-100 in their fleet and some day you should take that route as well to compare. Have a nice day and visit Russia more often! 🤝🏼
Amazing Trip! Love seeing flight reports on these soviet aircraft. Thankfully the 2nd flight wasn’t completely full other wise the trees at the end of runway were going to get a clipping on take off! Definitely a collaboration with “bald and bankrupt” is required sometime, it would be amazing! ✈️
I remember flying on a YAK 40 (Business Class with Carpet) from Minsk to Vienna back in April 1995. It was a strange sensation entering the plane from the rear steps and then climbing up the plane to my assigned seat! However, the flight was uneventful apart from some challenging departure issues @ Minsk Airport Customs!
Rumour has it that this aircraft is so old, that the instruction manual is in Latin manuscript, on parchment.
Haha
This video reminds me of a flight I road on from Puerta Escondido to the city of Oaxaca Mexico. The year was 1984 and we flew on an old DC 9 that was built in the 1950s. I also only had 1/2 a seat belt. I guess when you are flying into the mountains of Mexico a seat belt is not going to save you.😂
i’m loving these longer videos!!
Baltica #7. Excellent Choice ! (I'm a Baltica #6 Porter fan, myself).
Your videos are so incredible entertaining because you are able to create the exciting feeling at the airport before stepping on the plane, even through a video.
Also the knowledge about the planes, airlines and places. Just on point.👌💪✌
Noel - correction "The Great Patriotic War", I once was corrected by a very grumpy Russian when I referred to WW2
The taxi driver was a moonlighting sniper....😂
What an amazing landing, given the circumstances, short runway, etc. Lovely old plane!
It is good video. I thought Yak-40 were only past memories of the Soviet aviation, but they are still flying. Greetings from Panama.
