I can’t wait to post the Derek Jeter vid we did together! You explained it perfectly! I’ll try to remember to post the link here when I upload it Jan of 2019! My man 👊😉
Well at age 38 he has lost a lot of the quickness, speed, arm strength, etc. that he possessed earlier in his career. But he has played 18 years at the most demanding position in the infield for the most storied franchise in mlb history, has won 5 gold gloves, and will go down as one of the best players to every play the game. I think its a good idea to look at how he does things mechanically and learn from him.
ANTONILLI thanks for the tips and videos you post. your info greatly appreciated. coming from someone who made it to the bigleagues says alot. i have a 12 year old, whos rather short, smallest player on any team he plays with, cant expect much height from him i my self am only 5'6" and his mom is 5'0" so i knew he was gonna be a shorty. every since he started playing ball at the age of 4 i knew he had to get it rite in order to compete, by saying that i meant he had to have a correct fielding position, throwing, stance, attention etc. im sure all the info you provide here took you most of your career to develop and some can say perfect, and for that i greatly appreciate it. keep posting
Exactly. There is no since in rushing the transfer because your feet and body are not ready to throw that quickly. That usually just leads to bobbles and glove patting. If you bring the ball to the middle of your body it syncs your upper and lower body perfectly to throw.
It is really personal preference. I know a lot of guys that do use it and a lot that don't like the feel. Most outfielders I know like two fingers in the pinky slot because it helps them close the glove easier and usually allows for a nicer pocket. There are a decent amount of infielders that are starting to change over, but again it's really all about feel and what feels comfortable to you. Good luck!
Jeter has a really unique swing, that is one reason I haven't gone into his mechanics that much. I may be able to put something together for you though. I will do my best. Thanks for the suggestion!
I teach to field the ball out front and funnel it to the middle of our body on normal ground balls. If the ball is a short hop you can "pinch" it or work through it. We have a video on fielding short hops that you can check out.
Everyone is a little different. Most shortstops will have their left foot slightly in front of their right. 6 inches should work fine. I think it helps get your body squared to the baseball and helps put your feet in good position to field the ball and set your feet with your momentum going towards 1st.
Yeah a lot of it comes from practice. It also helps to get to the side of the ball instead of looking at it straight on. This gives you a better angle to see the hops.
It depends. It could be your arm action that is causing you to not release the ball as quickly as possible. It could be your footwork. It could be the timing of everything. Tough to tell without seeing it.
Thanks for clarifying! Some coaches teach to transfer directly after you field the ball and as you said in your "Transfer to Throw" video, they end up patting their glove before they throw almost every single time.
at 18 years old jeter was throwin 95 mph from shortstop, hes the first and youngest with raw talent people that hate wish they could ball out⚾ golden gloves because he earned them when nobody else stood out look at the facts.
He has made some of the greatest plays in history, yet many baseball analysts think he was one of the worst fielding shortstops ever. It's really quite weird. According to Baseball Reference, his fielding WAR (wins above replacement) was almost always negative each year he played. That means that defensively, he was SUPER below-average. He was consistently at the very bottom of the pile for fielding shortstops. On the other hand, he was a very good hitter, and personally, I think that makes up for his fielding. Typically, the shortstop position is known for fielding prowess and decent (not very good tho) hitting. But Jeter was always one of the best hitters in the league, let alone best hitting shortstops, so I think he deserves the hype.
@fallinthewetsand Oo sorry I misunderstood the question. It is tough to find routine plays on mlb.com you are right. I try RUclips for routine plays. They usually have a better selection.
Yeah it's not just you. I think most infielders have a tough time on really hard hit balls. I think the biggest thing is to try to stay loose and don't tense up when you see the ball hit hard. If you stay loose your hands will usually work better and give you a better shot at making a play.
@fallinthewetsand What about routine ground balls? Fielding the routine ground ball consistently is what gives guys the chance to advance to the next level.
Also you do not put your glove down early as it slows down the process. It is all timing and very fluid, & smooth. If you are a SS & going up the middle you can take your eye off the ball & pick it up again after a couple of steps. It is quicker. You put your glove out early you lose your range & foot speed. When you surround the ball you can go right to your throwing motion all in 1 motion. You can throw or shovel.
@ryro2255 Well I'm trying to teach...That is what the channel is for...Anyone can watch videos on players fielding on youtube but to understand how and why he is doing certain things is the important part
I've had this discussion with a lot of players because some coaches in my area teach the same thing. All I will say is on a routine ground (we are not talking about short hops) I've played for 4 professional organizations and worked with a dozen infield coaches at the big league level and every single one teaches to funnel the ball to the middle of your body on a routine ground ball. I'd also say that 99% of big league infielders don't push through a routine ground ball.
Hey Matt, I recently moved to Virginia from Arizona and they teach things a little bit differently all the way around. Nobody really hits with their lower half here. Also in the infield, they are taught to softly push through the ball instead of bring the ball to the middle of your body. I just wanted to know your take on pushing through the ball instead of funneling.
Okay video, but you would very rarely have your feet square when fielding the ball. Your feet fall Right-Left before fielding (V-cut) to get momentum to 1B, so the left foot should be in front (toe to inseam). The only time a SS would ever have his right foot slightly in front would be a pivot feed to 2B on a DP to allow him to clear the left hip and be more square to his throw.
Quick question, when I field a ground ball in the middle of me, do I fold the glove when I catch the ball? That's what I've been doing the whole time, but after watching some professionals the glove seems to just block the ball rather than 'catching' it. Every time I try to do it the ball bounces off the glove into my throwing hand and it hurts. How does one 'catch' a ground ball exactly? Great video as always!
I'm fine with the fielding aspect of being a shortstop but my problem is that I need to work on getting the throw to first quicker. I am 12 so I have time to work on it. Go NF Blackhawks
You want to catch the ball out in front of your body, but not so far out front that your fielding arm is completely extended and stiff. There should be a slight bend in your fielding elbow.
I understand that at this point he may very well grade out as a below average SS on most defensive metrics. And I know that winning Gold Glove Awards doesn't mean your a great or even good fielder at the big league level. But I am teaching mechanics to 12 year old kids and I think Derek Jeter is someone they can learn something from. I'm not a GM and I'm not trying to put together a team so in this case his defensive metrics have no relevance.
A question on staggering his feet as opposed to completely square. At the end of your video ii shows Jeter moving for the ball. His feet are definitely staggered more than a couple inches. More like tip of his right foot is roughly across from his instep, 6 inches or so. I think that allows you a greater ability to get down on the ball while still being balanced. Your Opinion?
hey i was just wondering if you had any like at home drills for infielders, pitchers, and hitting. When im at home I watch a lot of baseball and I want to improve my game but i dont have the opportunity to go to a cage all the time or the field with a friend.
when fielding a ground ball, how far in front of your body should you be making contact with the ball? way out in front? or closer to you body? thanks!
I'm having some trouble on the the pickoff play as a second basemen. I'm 14 and I've never played second in my life and I'm just confused on where to be when there's a runner on second base
So when you receive a ground ball do you want to ride the ball in or field it out in front and get the ball/field through the ball. I've always been told to do both (even by the same coach) and it's confusing to me.
Lol yes I did not have a microphone back then. It was one of my first videos I used to have to get really close to my computer for people to hear me lol
I agree with most that you say, but I do not teach the alligator way of fielding a ground ball. I will have a business up in about 3-4 weeks & I will be teaching the surround the ball and have your arms like a barrel and coming from the side. If I bounce a tennis, basket, or racquetball to you, will you catch them with the alligator style. There are a lot of people teaching your method, & I will explain my way of fielding the way we were taught years ago, it is quicker & not robotic..
wow im doing everything right according to this video nice so im not doing anything wrong i always thought i was doing something wrong all along because it didnt feel right but i guess im good
i like that you break mechanics down in slow motion but you need to show the entire clip first, then break it down. Your viewers need to be able to see the entire play through before breaking down the mechanics.

@@AntonelliBaseball How bad did you want to correct him on the spelling of your name. It is, after all written right under the video. haha
Yes he has had an unbelievable career!
great vids
I did not know Matt had this channel when he was still playing.
@MANCHESTER UNITED STFU PUSSY

@youbute2007 Sure thing. I have been asked a few times to make one on this so I should have it up in a few or two. Thanks for the suggestion!
@Calibersz Thanks for the suggestion. I've received a lot lately but will definitely try to get something up for you!

Yes he makes it look easy!
@fallinthewetsand Oo sorry I misunderstood the question. It is tough to find routine plays on mlb.com you are right. I try RUclips for routine plays. They usually have a better selection.
Good job. You helped my 9-year-old visualize things I'm been telling him for years.
@thebaseballking3 No problem, thanks for watching!
Yes please do a glove to throwing-hand transfer video! And thanks for all the videos, they are great!
@mrbaseballer112 Yeah you can do a lot of ball in hand drills...I will post a video on them at some point in the next few weeks...it should help
@DjSmash5 Yeah I'll see if I can put something together for you. Thanks for watching and writing!
im gonna go with 2 in the pinky. also im 16 and i was never taught the proper mechanics for fielding a ground ball so this video really helps
@nick929100 I've done underhand feeds to 2nd for a second baseman. I am going to throw up a pivot throw soon. Thanks for the suggestion!
Great video!

Got ya. Try both see which you like more and go with that.
@sdmike1 Hey no problem man...thanks for watching
Great stuff for me to work on my teenager on. Thanks for posting

I have a video on fielding drills. I do that one a lot at home with a racquetball off of a wall. Try it out.
Okay video, but you would very rarely have your feet square when fielding the ball. The only time a SS would ever have his right foot slightly in front would be a pivot feed to 2B on a DP to allow him to clear the left hip and be more square to his throw.
@DjSmash5 Look at the "Approach" video with Jose Reyes. It talks more about the things you do before actually fielding the ground ball.
Quick question, when I field a ground ball in the middle of me, do I fold the glove when I catch the ball? That's what I've been doing the whole time, but after watching some professionals the glove seems to just block the ball rather than 'catching' it. you should do a video of 2b turning double plays
Thanks this really helped a lot.
I open it with Quicktime and can slow it down with that.

@mrusomaroff You can find 1000 videos of him fielding ground balls on MLB.com
Show Goes On by Lupe Fiasco
do you think having two fingers in the pinky slot of your glove would make a difference in fielding?
hey i was just wondering if you had any like at home drills for infielders, pitchers, and hitting.
When im at home I watch a lot of baseball and I want to improve my game but i dont have the opportunity to go to a cage all the time or the field with a friend.
Hey I'm having a lot of trouble fielding grounders in the outfield. I was wondering if you could make a video just like this one but for outfielders.
At this point of his career he isn't the defender he once was, but not many 38 year olds out there able to do what he does.
alright thanks i know dustin pedroia and brandon phillips do it. i just got a new glove and im not sure which way to break it in
vizquel y jeter lo mejor de lo mejor...lastima que no tienes traduccion es español para entender tus explicaciones antonelli...
@TouchEmAllBaseball no im asking if you can see videos of players fielding routine ground balls on mlb.com, i dont see where

Ok thanks
Your breathing and swallowing drove me crazy lol but good video man.
Lol yes I did not have a microphone back then. It was one of my first videos I used to have to get really close to my computer for people to hear me lol
Antonelli Baseball it's all good my man. I was just giving you a hard time. keep doing your thing brotha.

Thanks any tiles for a new shortstop
We made a video on holding runners. Check it out it should help you out a little bit.
nice song
What do you use to be able to make a video slow mo?
Derek jeter was a great example for little kids
@TouchEmAllBaseball but routine ground balls?
thank you i am better at infield now :) !
How do you get the video off of youtube and save it on the mac.. do you know?
wow im doing everything right according to this video nice so im not doing anything wrong i always thought i was doing something wrong all along because it didnt feel right but i guess im good
That I'm not sure how to do. Sorry
I'm a shortstop and I'm trying to increase my throwing velocity, what would you recommend me to do?
demygod try to get one of those bouncy baseballs and throw it at the wall then have someone like 40 ft away from u and throw it to him
Check out Driveline Baseball they do a good job with throwing...better than me
Resistance band workouts do miracles
i like that you break mechanics down in slow motion but you need to show the entire clip first, then break it down. Your viewers need to be able to see the entire play through before breaking down the mechanics.
Sounds good will do! Thanks for watching and commenting!
good vid

What's the opening song
Whats the song called?
Dude... I just want to see Jeter field the damn ball!
