I've been watching your videos for a few years now and never knew this video existed . You have an amazing fly tying room . This gave me some ideas for setting up my fly tying room that I'm just starting to put together.
Wow! Just wow! You have more stuff than a lot of fly shops! Your channel has greatly improved my fly tying, it’s an awesome channel and I sincerely want to thank you. You’re absolutely awesome sharing your talent and tips with us. Again, thank you!
Landed here using the QR code in your book, otherwise I might have missed an opportunity to view a talented artist in his element. Great organization here. I am a painter, an amateur taxidermist and now I am beginning tie flies. I know how important it is to have a place for your stuff. A studio like this allows you to spend your time creating art not digging through boxes. Thank you for this opportunity to see a great space.
Hi Deb, good to hear from you and I',m so pleased that you are getting on with the book, I'm working on volume II now. Thanks and good luck with the tying!!
👍👍 Thanks for the tour! Beautiful setup. Amazing assortment. Clean, organized and accessible. What started out with an inherited vice from my dad, has now taken over my wifes dining room..She wants it back! 😂 That salmon had to be an epic battle on a 5wt. I got a 30# carp on my 4wt and that’s my biggest fish on any of my flyrods..So far! 🙂 Thank you for all you share and do for us Barry. Have a great one! 👍🎣🪶👌
Wow and wow! As I sit Covid-19 quarantine, like the rest of the world of over 60 fly fisherman for the past 8 weeks, this morning I stumbled into a whole new world with the purchase of your latest book and visit to your RUclips channel...I find myself watching this video segment and have the sensation of visiting an advanced world...you clearly have raised the bar on both effective space application and organizational design. As others have stated, a true man cave; all that is needed is a outside porch/veranda with BBQ grill and fridge.
Hi, thank you! It's taken many years and a whole load of mistakes and corrections and I'm still learning! So pleased that you like the book and are finding it useful...
I think you have the best tying room I've ever seen i appreciate order you have maintained i hope to one day have a space much like yours thank you for your videos i enjoy watching and learning new patterns in your tutorials its awesome to see one of or sports tru ambassadors showing all aspiring fly tiers how to become a better fisherman and ambassadors to this great sport of ours
holy sh!t, you have more boxes of salmon hooks alone in volume than all my materials and equipment together... That is a serious collection of fly tying stuff right there.
I just ended up here using the QR code in your book! Which I discovered through your channel. The circle is somplete. I really enjoyed what I've read so far and I believe it will be a great help for many years of tying. Thank you for all the great material and the inspiration!
Barry, I've been watching your videos and being most impressed, but this tour of your work area is beyond impressive its truly the ultimate space. 45 m2... Not that big? I've got 3 shelve in the store room and the dinner table, OK I haven't filmed yet but my trials have been with my phone camera video!! I suppose if it's the way you earn your living then I get it. No matter what, I like most of your subscribers comments, am pea green with envy! Thanks
Awesome space!! I don't think my lady would ever let me aquire that much stuff for hobby fly tying haha but you do excellent work and since being turned to your channel by a fellow fisherman. I've replicated a few of your flies now and can say my tying ability has improved immensely. Now when I see any tying video I think "I can definitely do that" with each step. Eager to get after it first chance I get.
Thanks Kyle, yes it's a special space! So pleased to hear that your tying has improved and the videos have helped. Barry thank you for sharinv your workshop with us! I was hoping to spot what type of bobbins you used, alas i couldnt make them out. I started tying a few months ago and im ready to tool up a bit...and im curious as to which bobbins you prefer?
I noticed that you mentioned that you use your Regal revolution for your production tying. Is there any particular reason why you favor that vise over other vises? I mean it's pretty clear you are at the level where you know what vise works best for specific flies so I am wondering really what vise would be a good one for me to go with. I'm debating between the Regal revolution, the Swiss Vise master, or the Renzetti master. I used to tie flies when I was a kid for fun, but I didn't fly fish and now that I fly fish I want to get back into tying flies. I'm leaning more towards the Regal but the Swiss Vise is super nice too.
I’m not sure which I like better, the wood paneling or the view! Very nice setting for someone who makes a living at being creative. And then, when you need a break you can re-live some of the hunts associated with the trophies. Could be worse!
Hi Barry, Great room! You mentioned that you have the “new” petitjean vise, did he come out with a new version? From my experience with his vise from a few years ago small hooks were help in place very secure but bigger hooks or long shank hooks would not hold secure and move under some pressure. What’s your experience with the vise and bigger hooks? Maybe the jaws work better with big hooks with this new version. Please let me know, thank you! Michael
Hi, the Petitjean vice is a relative new one with a larger Star screw for setting vice tension and all the new tools racks Gallows tool and bobbin holders. Otherwise its just a regular Swiss master. I have no problem with the hook size...
Hola maestro !!!
What no single malt? Nice Set up! Now in my tying room, is pretty much my whole house, since I live alone. And yeah every now and again, not often I will pour myself a drop or two of single malt.
This is heaven for a fly tier! I been tying for 6 years and I'm ready for a new rotary vise. I can't decide if I should buy a Dyna King, Regal Revolution or HMH TRV as my next vise. I see you have both, which one would you recommend for me? I tie sea trout and trout flies in size #2/0-#22. If you have some feedback it would be greatly appreciated.
Hi M, excellent well done. Well neither the Dyna King or the Regal are true rotary, and in my opinion thats a mistake if this is going to be your number 1 vice for tying on. A true rotary is a great advantage when tying any type of flies, if you haven't used one, it will change your tying. If you are seriously considering a D King or Regal, you have a good budget, so I would recommend a Renzetti, a vice that in my opinion beats your first two choices hands down, and I own several of all the vices mentioned. Whatever you choose, good luck...
@@Thefeatherbender thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. I was sure the DK Barracuda and ultimate indexer+ R Revolution were true rotary vises. Yeah, I heard great things about Renzetti vises, but I just like the look of DK vises better for some reason. I know I shouldn't care about look, but after looking at a Barracuda in a fly shop a few years ago I liked the look and feel of it and I wanted it ever since. The only reason why I was thinking about Regal Revolution is because of how simple it is to switch between different hook sizes. I'm going to take a closer look at Renzetti vises before I make a decision, I'm in no rush. BTW, Have you tested the HMH TRV? Thanks again.
@@MS-we4wi For sure you choose the vice that you like best. I have a Ultimate indexer and as far as i am concerned there is nothing ultimate about it! I have had to change the jaws TWICE! They where not tempered correctly +++ I haven't tried the HMH TRV but I have a HMH that I tied on for many years, but vices have moved on since then! Good luck and all the best!
what kind of fly did you te to get that cool rooster? ya know Barry if i didn't know better I would think you are kind of serious about tying flies.. love that view.. a little classical music and some fans blowing a soft breeze and I would never quit and come downstairs for anything.. except maybe to use the WC...
Do you prefer a c clamp or a pedestal? Seems like pedestal wouldn't skier you to rest your elbow on the desk top. I'm trying to decide and was just wanting you're input. Thanks
Hi Drew, I use both! The pedestal for home use and the C clamp for traveling, just because of the weight. Make sure if you go for the pedestal that it's heavy enough, I have a couple of pedestals that are just too light weight and can move when you are tying.
@@Thefeatherbender Thanks a lot! I ended up going with a large tying station and I love it plenty heavy to hold my vice and I can store all my materials in the holders. Thanks for the guidance
Nice. I have a fly tying room in my house. It's nowhere near as organized as yours. In fact, it's cluttered with hundreds of spools of thread, wires, tinsels, feathers, hair, foam, hooks, etc., etc. I have a good friend who's an exceptional angler and fly tier. He has a small desk where he ties all his flies. He only fishes with the two flies that he invented: the RS2 and the Avatar. Both in various sizes and colors. The materials he uses are TMC or Daiichi hooks, beaver fur for dubbing, microfibbets for tails, and web of saddle hackle feathers for wing. I've known him for 22 years and I've never seen anyone catch as many fish as he does. He's a minimalist. Uses forceps for a vise and at 86 he still ties his flies down to size 28 when needed.
Thank you. So Schmoonkie, Rim Chung is your old friend ? If so that is just great! I love his flies, and quite right, he needs only two patterns. If possible I would love to get a couple of his flies for my collection, I would quite happily buy them, or do a swap. No matter what please give him my warmest regards and thank him for his contribution to our craft.
@@Thefeatherbender Hi. Yes he is. Wasn't sure you'd be aware of him or his flies. If you do a RUclips search for "Rim ties the rs2" or "Rim ties the avatar" you can find videos of him tying his flies. I'm also the owner of the rs2fly.com web page, which I originally created in '98 to honor him. At 86 he still fishes about three times a week. During warmer months, he could be on the water for 8-10 hours in a day. He's in exceptionally good shape for his age. If you contact me through the rs2fly.com web page, I'll send you some flies which he tied himself.
very awesome....just got your one book THE FEATHER BENDER'S FLY TYING TECHNIQUES...JUST COME IN TODAY FROM AMAZON...AWESOME BOOK...VERY DETAILED....AND GOOD FOR ME FOR ONLY FLY TYING FROM APRIL 18TH 2020....MY FIRST FLY ON THAT DATE...
Thanks Barry I noticed you using a head mounted magnifier whilst tying in one of your videos. It may have been at the BFFI show. Can you please tell me what make it is and where to purchase? It had 2 large round lenses and I have not seen anything like it in Australia. Keep tying those marvellous flies. Dave H.
My better half tells me I have too much stuff. I can fit all my materials in a small drawer. They say fly's catch more fishermen than fish so if you were limited to three fly paterns for river or lake what would they be ?
@@Thefeatherbender Thank you for your reply, it is much appreciated there are many times I have sat in front of my vice cursing my lack of one material or another even though I have more than enough materials to tie many diverse patterns but still thinking if I only had such and such I could tie the fly that would give me the most success. Thanks again.
Hi Daz, I use the Regal when I am tying a lot of patterns that dont require full rotation, its a quick and reliable vice that has incredible holding power. But for most of my tying I use a Swiss master vise, you can see that in the last video I posted.
Hi Barry. Very nice, thanks for giving us a tour :) Can I ask though about the silver sheet with the mayfly etching (?) at the top of the stairs? clearly visible at 0:36, it looks really nice. Where did you get it and is something similar available? Thanks. Charlie
Hi Charlie, Thanks. The mayfly print is one of my photos, I just had done on the aluminium sheet to see how it would look. I am having an exhibition of fly fishing photos next week at the Italian museum of fly fishing in Castel di Sangro in Italy. I do sell a limited edition of these prints but they are a little expensive. If you are interested you can e mail me.
Very complete set up. Mine was close but then I went another way and sold it all! Now I’m in the middle of starting again. I just received your book, fly tying techniques and it’s great!! I can’t wait to start again!! Tight lines🐛🐞🐜!!!!
I can place and remove hooks of all sizes without any adjustments to the jaws and I don't need all the fine mechanics that the Swiss master offers when tying at production speed. the right tool for the right job!
@@Thefeatherbender makes sense. Do you know who Del Mazza is? Did you ever meet him? I learned to tie from him, Jack Dennis, Dick Talleur and Ron Alcott.
I notice several sets of moose antlers. Assuming that you live in the UK , where do you hunt moose? As far as I know , they were extirpated in much of Europe (UK included). If you travel to Canada/USA/Russia to moose hunt , how do you get the antlers home?
Magnificent space - it must have taken quite some time to develop such a good system of organisation. May I say a heartfelt thank you for taking the time and making the effort to share your knowledge and experience with others. I am getting back into tying after many years away. Age has brought less steady hands but more disposable income and I find myself in a position to purchase a new vise. I note that you use both the Regal and the Swiss Master Vise. Both are on my shortlist. May I ask you which of the two you would choose if it were to be the only vise you could tie on? And may I also ask what your dream vise would be, if not one of the two? Thanks again and all the best to you.
Thanks, and good to hear that you are once again tying. Without doubt I would choose the Swiss Vise. I have collected many vise over the 35 years I have been tying and there is not one that comes near the Swiss Vise. Check out my video, ruclips.net/video/x9WskBbooaU/видео.html where Marc Petitjean explains the Swiss vise, all its applications and extras.
Very cool! So you stand up while tying your instructional videos? I saw your wooden vice stand but can't wrap my mind around how you set it up and film. One thing I love about your instructional videos is that you film the tying process from the tiers point of view. Very helpful. Would love to know how you pull that off! :-) Thank you!!
Hi Rob, thanks, always good to get positive feedback! It took a long time and much failing to get it right, especially the POV filming! I have the camera over my right shoulder and tie with the vice not in front of me, but to one side (off centre) this also took time to get use too!
Very nice room and I love watching all of your videos. Two questions. 1) you tie a lot of large flies (in my opinion) 8s, 10s, 12s, etc. many of which I though would be much smaller 16s, 18s, etc. Is that for filming purposes or do you just have a lot of big bugs in Norway? 2) What type of camera do you use to film your videos. The filming is great. Thank you,
Thanks Ray. Both, I try and tie a little larger for the videos and yes we tend to fish with larger flies here in Norway. The camera I use is a Canon EOS1 Mk III.
Very impressive space. I cant believe how many hooks you have! Must have cost you a fortune. Can I ask what camera you use to film and photograph your flies and videos? Thanks
Hey Barry, Well you certainly have an extensive collection. Are the books you have written on fly tying available? I would love to have them. I love my books on fly tying as well. I have a lot of supplies but you have me beat by miles! Thanks for sharing. That looks like a great place to tie. All the best, Sean
Hi Sean, unfortunately most of my books are in Norwegian but there are some small ones on sea trout flies and pike flies that are available in English also a book on tying materials in English these are all available you can find them here: www.anglebooks.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=barry+ord+clarke
Hi Berry picked up some beeswax ,do you mix beeswax with anything to keep it on your finger or tools I tried to melt a bit to soften to stick it to my finger but it gets very brittle and flaky please help thank Marc
Hi Berry I tried the wax recipe you sent me ,what a mess I made lol how can I buy some from you . You can message me in Facebook if you want ,I will accept you as a friend to keep this private thank you .P S. ( I must have don something wrong or the wax I bought was not real beeswax made in china.
The salmon in the painting I caught in Vatnsdalså my favourite Icelandic river. I have fished all over the world, over 40 different countries, but I always return to Iceland. In the past 25 years I have fished 37 times in Iceland, I love it!
To those who can't/wont afford the expensive plastic containers, try to ask candy stores and others, that get their products in plastic boxes. It works fine, and they are not (very I suspect) dangerous to have the house full of. I bet I've got 500 of them smaller ones (about 1 kg of candy size) with tools, materials aso in them, and they also are tighter lids than many expensive ones.
@@Thefeatherbender Here in Denmark, the news tell us, that we are the most candy eating population in the world, and "almost every" store has "candy buffets", where you fill a bag (that have grown from mobile phone sized to "wide screen tv sized" during my life time) and weight it - like fruit and potatos in "more sain" contries. And they usually come in nice square 15-20 x 10ish clear boxes, that you can get for free from the garbage - or by asking the peeps, that then don't have to pay for getting them removed. I use them for "everything" - but they go brittle if they are exposed to to much sun light, so fx using them for plants only works for a while. Still - free stuff and safe for food (if any plastic really is 100% safe to eat.
Hi Lumo, Yeah I actually have 3 hook trophies, bronze, silver and the gold. They are actually real in production Great white shark hooks from Mustad, the largest fishing hook made. I think that you may have a problem casting one of those with a fly rod!
Beautiful room with excellent woodwork & view. Of course, one can never have too many vises, .... or too many hooks, hackles, & furs. I’m beginning to suspect we fly tyers are all hoarders. :-)
one thing your room is missing is amber with incased insects in them it would add a nice touch to have ancient insects in fact it would be quite neat to add Jurassic period fly patterns to your feather bending styles. Just an idea.
I've been watching your videos for a few years now and never knew this video existed . You have an amazing fly tying room . This gave me some ideas for setting up my fly tying room that I'm just starting to put together.

Thanks for sharing, very much enjoyed.
Very nice setup!
Thank you Dynamite guy.
what kind of fly did you te to get that cool rooster? ya know Barry if i didn't know better I would think you are kind of serious about tying flies.. love that view.. a little classical music and some fans blowing a soft breeze and I would never quit and come downstairs for anything.. except maybe to use the WC...
Looking forward to getting your book for Christmas this year!!
Good I hope you enjoy it Will.
@@schmoonkie I tried to contact you through your site but I keep getting my message returned by mailer demon!
very awesome....just got your one book THE FEATHER BENDER'S FLY TYING TECHNIQUES...JUST COME IN TODAY FROM AMAZON...AWESOME BOOK...VERY DETAILED....AND GOOD FOR ME FOR ONLY FLY TYING FROM APRIL 18TH 2020....MY FIRST FLY ON THAT DATE...
Thank you Harry I hope that you learn from it. Merry Christmas.
@@Thefeatherbender merry Christmas and a happy new year to you...
Thanks Barry
I noticed you using a head mounted magnifier whilst tying in one of your videos. It may have been at the BFFI show. Can you please tell me what make it is and where to purchase? It had 2 large round lenses and I have not seen anything like it in Australia. Keep tying those marvellous flies. Dave H.
Hi Dave, and thanks. The loops I use are called Mega view and are from C&F www.sportfish.co.uk/megaview.html
Nice space! But come on where’s the 55” smart TV n the sound system?

Perfect room ! ❤️
Thank you!
Barry, what is the red/orange device on your tying table at around 4:15? Beautiful set up. Wow.
Hi Chris thanks, its a ruler for measuring materials.
@@Thefeatherbender Thank you,
Your room is Magic 😀👍👏
Thanks Miroslav.
My better half tells me I have too much stuff. I can fit all my materials in a small drawer. They say fly's catch more fishermen than fish so if you were limited to three fly paterns for river or lake what would they be ?
Hi Tim, off the top of my head probably a muddler minnow, F fly & a parachute mayfly all in various sizes.
I see you have a range of vises. Is there a reason you are using the Regal over the other ones ? And could you give your thoughts on vises.
Wow, the ultimate man cave (attic). I’m going to make my wife watch it so she’ll feel bad for claiming that my 8 boxes of stuff is overkill :)
Thanks, and good luck with that!
I just made my wife watch it. She said I need to get 2 more jobs and move out lol
If she is like my wife, we have a deal....dont ask me about my fishing things and I wont ask you about your shoes and handbags
Very complete set up. Mine was close but then I went another way and sold it all! Now I’m in the middle of starting again. I just received your book, fly tying techniques and it’s great!! I can’t wait to start again!! Tight lines🐛🐞🐜!!!!
Wow! That’s a lot of stuff! Nice den, BTW. Why do you use your Regal vise for production tying and not the PetitJean?
Hi ZDG, Thats right, I do hunt moose at home, but I live in Norway not the UK.

Thanks William.
Dude? Refer to him as "Master."
@@robertcornelius3514 I don't mind Dude or master, LOL !
I appreciate your prompt reply. I think I shall go with your recommendation - it looks like an outstanding vise. Thanks and have a great New Year!
So nice place. Wishing to have similar one…
Thanks, only 40 years of collecting and tying...
Amazing space so much gear👍👍😂
Thanks Thomas.
Very nice decor! Would you tell me what kind of camera do you use for the tying videos? Thanks, Thomas
Hi Thomas, I use a Canon Eos 1 Mk III.
Wow! Well you sure tie beautiful flies considering that! Thank you for your videos. They are helping me become a better tier.
Amazing!
Man you have more stock than my fly shops!
Shhh, the wife might hear you Bob!
Woooooow . Excelent
Thanks Michal.
Thanks for sharing. Would love to see some backstage shoot when you mking your videos.
Thanks
Hi Owen thanks. I use a Canon Eos1 Mklll for all my filming.
it's heaven
Hey Barry, Well you certainly have an extensive collection. Are the books you have written on fly tying available? I would love to have them. I love my books on fly tying as well. I have a lot of supplies but you have me beat by miles! Thanks for sharing. That looks like a great place to tie. All the best, Sean
Hi Sean, unfortunately most of my books are in Norwegian but there are some small ones on sea trout flies and pike flies that are available in English also a book on tying materials in English these are all available you can find them here: www.anglebooks.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=barry+ord+clarke
Who did the art hanging on your stair case wall - you said the name at the beginning but I didn't quite catch it.
Hi Jesse a friend called Ola Steen a Norwegian artist who has done a whole set of prints on fly tying and fishing.
Wow what an amazing room! I isn’t started tying and your videos are incredible. I’m even more impressed now!
Glad you like them!

wauuuw, you got a lot, is it your job too tye flies? and if how many country do you send them to?
Hi Line, yes thats right, tying flies and photographing them, I send them to loads of countries!
The fly tying room is bigger than the fly shop portion of the fishing store in my city 😂
Same here! lol
Hi Berry picked up some beeswax ,do you mix beeswax with anything to keep it on your finger or tools I tried to melt a bit to soften to stick it to my finger but it gets very brittle and flaky please help thank Marc
Hi Marc, the recipe that I use is as follows: 15% bees wax, 65% tree resin, 20% Castor oil. All melted together and mixed...

Hi Berry ,you really need to make a beeswax video you are the best
Hey Barry - where do you get hold of tree resin? Any particular tree?
Hi, nice video! I am from Iceland, in what river did you catch that Salmon that is in the painting?
The salmon in the painting I caught in Vatnsdalså my favourite Icelandic river. I have fished all over the world, over 40 different countries, but I always return to Iceland. In the past 25 years I have fished 37 times in Iceland, I love it!
@@Thefeatherbender it's a special place fishing vise, not to be biased hahah :)
They do work well, I used them for years, but if you can your hands on the clear ones, so you can see whats in them!

So you have two of those huge hooks, is one meant to be made into a fly? ;)

Thank you...
Amazing. I could spend a whole day just looking at your stuff. One thing missing I didn't see a coffee pot you must not drink coffee
Hi Mike, I have to go through the kitchen to get to the tying room, so coffee isn't far, and always brewing.
one thing your room is missing is amber with incased insects in them it would add a nice touch to have ancient insects in fact it would be quite neat to add Jurassic period fly patterns to your feather bending styles. Just an idea.
Trés bel atelier et " refuge" ;-)
