Thank you Craig! I did this video last year and am thinking it might be time to do an updated one. I've changed a few things in my area since this one. :-)
I’m jealous, I can NEVER keep my area that clean and neat. In our whole hose my wife gave me a tiny section in our unfinished basement! That way anytime I’m tying she can call me back up stairs to do things for her. That’s her way of telling me I’m giving her enough attention. Cudo’s to you for your area.
Ha! That's funny Gary. Before we lived in this house, we had no garage or basement and I got to tie either on the kitchen table or a desk in the corner of the living room! That kind of forces you to be neat. :-) Yeah, I'm pretty lucky now with a whole office space in the basement!
Thanks for sharing your tying room Matt. It's always nice to see how other tyers organize and work. I must say your tying room is really really clean. I'd share a video of my own, but I'd need a couple of days to clean it up. Cheers

Very impressive. Please, no one ever mention this video to my wife. She has already seen this with RC Planes and Reloading equipment. But, boys and their toys. Here we go again. 😂
Impressive setup. I don't think that making videos is something that I will ever do. I thought I had way too much tying stuff. I know you are the King behind the Vise. Thanks really nice share as I have often wondered what video production was like. Have a great week!
Thanks James. Making videos did turn out to be harder than I thought it would be when I first started the channel. But I get a little better the more I do and at least I've gotten the editing down to about an hour for each one. As far as having too much tying stuff... this is what happens when you slowly gather stuff over the years, and never throw anything away!
New to fly fishing and tying thanks to the wounded Warrior program and project healing waters. Love both! Yours is the first, "how to organize" video I've watched. Thank you. I'm taking notes. I inherited a bunch of fly tying materials from my brother. It seemed overwhelming, especially since I'm not sure what's in some of the bags. This is just a thank you note. I like your videos. they are very professional compared to some. I'm not asking for anything thanks to the generosity of the Little River Chapter of Trout Unlimited. I'm shopping for a rotary vice but sure "Santa" aka my wife will provide. By that time i'm sure my skills will be worthy of such an upgrade, Your comparison videos are very good. I like how you list the criteria and put it in writing on the screen. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Dave. For many years I had one tote for everything and all the stuff inside in shoe boxes and baggies. I'd just spread it out all over the kitchen table when I wanted to tie! :-)
Matt amazing room everything is completely organized rm is completely white glove squared away. I'm working on mine I'm working on mine, I like the thread holder going to make mine this weekend for my cabinet. Thanks for all you do. KEEP IT TYING.
Thanks Pablo! Yeah, that thread holder is the way to go. If I recall, you can get it cheaper at Walmart than Amazon. Maybe about ten bucks. Of course I end up using the same three spools for 80% of my flies, but it can be fun to get crazy with the colors once in a while. Thanks for watching my friend! Cheers. -Matt
Matt very nice set up. Thanks for taking the time to make and post your tutorials! I am interested in learning how you made your shadow box/ boxes for flies. I have several dozen that I would like to display. Thanks again.
Steve- you got it. I'll plan a video on the shadow box, probably sometime early in the year. It'll take some planning and I've got two other DIY videos requested before this one (dubbing and dyeing). Thanks for the kind words my friend. Cheers. -Matt
Wow this was really nice to watch! Saw the Andycine RGB I recommend to you, and you have everything very well organized. Loved the cat, I had one just like him, but died a few years ago. I could barely see the black one !!! Awesome video Matt!
Thanks Otto! Yeah, my big orange cat is quite old too. Probably about 14 so not sure how much longer I'll have him around. I see you put another video out. I can't wait to check it out. I've got dinner duty tonight but will check it out in a bit. (Looks like you might hit 900 tonight... and not long before the big one! I think I've got about two more weeks. :-) )
Yep, that's exactly how I do it. Some RUclips tiers put the camera between them and their vise but that's hard to do. And some do like me but just wear a dark colored shirt for their background. And great idea about how I make videos. That could be a fun one to do. I'll see if I can't come up with one soon. Thanks for the inspiration!
Now I've got bench setup envy! ;o) I've always wanted to organize the way Lefty Kreh suggested in something I read along the way. But I became sort of a nomad tier. I always got evicted from choice locations, I'm not a successful squatter I guess. I have 1.5 rooms upstairs devoted to my outdoor pursuits but they got overrun with more acquisitions. Time to purge, thanks for the ideas Matt!
Oh yeah Joe! My biggest issue is hoarding materials and buying stuff I really don’t need. Maybe I should do a purge and give away a bunch of my crazy stuff. Like an episode of Hoarders! Hmm... something to think about. 🤔
Well, I've got a room in the basement. You have a wood shop! I would LOVE to have a wood shop. I would love to have a lathe and planer. I've never used either but always thought you could make some really cool stuff with them. Maybe when I retire... (but then again, I've got too many hobbies already.) :-)
Yeah Ryan, that would make a cool looking shadow box. Maybe a box that sits on a horizontal surface instead of a wall. With glass on all sides, a single row of flies. Maybe like one you would put a baseball bat in. What do you think of this thing? www.michaels.com/studio-decor-baseball-bat-display-case/10174362.html
@@SavageFlies The would be interesting. I think you would have to rig up some sort of interior lighting to it. Maybe one of those flat LED strips for growing plants or something that just stick on. I think LED lights would be cool. You can get them to change color with a remote, depending on what type of flies you are highlighting. I also think you would need to reinforce the backing that would attach to the wall. A lot of those cheap craft store frames do not have backing that would hold much weight if affixed to a wall.
Thanks! I just checked and the one I bought doesn't seem to be on Amazon right now. They do have this smaller one, which is the same pliers but not the bigger base. I suppose you could take a piece of 2mm foam and cut holes in it to stand these pliers up. Kind of a hack but it would probably work. amzn.to/3sJQTYE
Super nice & organized setup. I assume the organization came from your military experience. I imagine it’s quite difficult to tie while reaching around that reflector screen. Eek! That board of skins & feathers looks really impressive. Sweet! I will definitely copy your idea of using those little containers to hold completed dry flies. The next time we get Chinese food or other take-out, I’ll wash out the remaining mustard or duck sauce & save them as fly containers. Another container for you or your viewer to save - if you shop at Costco, Walmart or other store that sells large quantities, 1 gallon, large mouth pickle jars make great, pest proof storage containers for bird skins or furs. Not as pretty as your wall board or as stackable boxes but very useful. Another plus is that they are clear, so you can see what is inside, unlike the boxes.
Bob- those jars are a great idea! Even Mason jars that you can buy in bulk, maybe a 1-quart size, would hold a good size piece of fur and would keep it air tight. I've never had any pests get into the furs or feathers that are exposed to the air on the cork board, but I do keep a close eye on them and if something ever did get into them, I would reconsider keeping them like that. Maybe in Ziploc bags, or the jars. I do like the idea of jars. As for the condiment containers... I'm too lazy to wash out the ones from restaurants, especially when I can get a hundred for eight bucks, and that first hundred I bought has lasted me five years so far. :-) Thanks for watching my friend, and for the tips for other tiers!
I use a lot of ziplocs but the best and least expensive for bulk items are plastic shoe boxes.50+ years of tying and accumulating materials I need as many as I can get.
@@michaelmerlino6753 -Wow, 50+ years is impressive! What do you think is the oldest material you have that's still usable? I found a squirrel tail in a box from the 1980s that still looked about the same as it did back then. :-)
Thanks John! And I do not have any black squirrel tails... I've got several dyed colors: pink, yellow, green, red, but no black. I'll bet black squirrel tail would make some pretty cool hair wing streamers. Do you have any and if so, what do you tie with it?
@@john-tb3ik John- that would be awesome! Send me an email at matt@savageflies.com and we can swap info. I'll send you some starling after I get it dyed yellow if you want to tie up some of the yellerhammers I hope to do. (As soon as I can do the dying, which I've never attempted before. But it doesn't look too hard.)
Sure thing... I'll add that to the to-do list. I've got the DIY dubbing one first, and then one on dyeing materials, but maybe I can do a shadow box one over Christmas break. It's really not too hard. Cheers. -Matt
I pick up plenty of (fresh) roadkill and trap smaller critters but haven't really hunted in many years. But I do have friends who'll save me their deer tails. I should probably get into upland game bird hunting but I'm not sure I can afford a new sport. 😁 Thanks for the note!
Thanks Kenny. It's not that difficult. It took a little getting used to, and occasionally I'll bump it when I'm tying but it's not hard to work around.
Dennis- after I cut the fur into small enough pieces to put in Ziploc bags, I'll just put in the freezer for a couple of days. Especially for anything harvested in the summer. If it was a winter pelt I don't usually do anything after letting it dry out.
Mark- I literally use this thing here. amzn.to/34IAZ85 I take the clamp off and hang it by its cord. I use a 5,700 Kelvin LED bulb. I forget how many lumens it is, maybe 1500 or so? But if you don't have a ceiling you could hang a light down from, you might want something like a swing-arm desk lamp. amzn.to/3I7iOra You can still put any bulb you want in it. Of course you can get dedicated fly tying lights but I've never found them to be any better than something like these. But they sure cost a lot more. I hope this helps!
Thanks for the tour, Matt. Were you this organized before you started your channel? I'm fairly organized anyway but starting the channel caused me to kick that up a notch. Love your room. It looks really cozy. Mine also has the pandemic work from home situation going on. Are you a cat person on your own or by way of living with cat people? We are currently fostering, and have one cat at the moment.
I go though spurts of getting organized-- maybe a couple times a year. Then I hoard enough until it drives me crazy to do it again! But yes, starting the channel has caused me to stay a bit neater. It's almost like a few times a week inviting people into my house. :-) As for being a cat person, I'm both a dog and cat guy. I brought the first two into my marriage, but we've gotten a couple more since (and one of the originals is still with us 14 years later). Everyone in the family loves animals. Our dogs, cats, rabbits and chickens. Of course the chickens aren't too cuddly but they do make good eggs. And I let a couple of our rabbits go unchecked this summer and we went from four to about 29 in a couple of months. (We're back down to seven, and they're outdoors in a couple of different runs.) Fun times!
Me , a 20”x20” six drawer cabinet with my vise clamped to it 😳. You a dedicated room ( man cave ) with enough supplies to tie fly’s for the rest of your life , 👈🏼😄
Hahaha! And my little corner of the basement has only gotten more cluttered and crazy since I first made this video. I've got to get this hobby under control. :-)
0:45 I have three cats- I can’t bring a feather in the house with attracting attention. I wait until the cats are napping in another room before tying.
Ha! If I'm careless and leave my bench a mess overnight, I might find that my cats have decided to play with every feather that was out. It forces me to keep a neater bench. :-)
Ha! You got that right! I haven't even talked about my spaghetti can in any videos yet. That's where I put the flies that are so bad I won't even put them in any fly box. Every once in a while I'll scrape the materials off these monstrosities and salvage the hooks. :-)
James- I did that video several months ago! It's a kind of long one, but it'll show you the basics of how I do it. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/-mlyOdxuUS8/видео.html
Say we had something we wanted to say donate or give u in thanks for your vids and help how would we go about doing that? Note i do not have Facebook or any other of them social media sites. This is the only way i knew to ask.
No worries John, just send me an email. I've gotten a few book donations over the last year that I gave away on the channel. And I welcome anybody who wants to help me give back to our great community! Thanks for the offer. My email is matt@savageflies.com.
Jason- you're not the only one! For the bigger giveaways on the channel, I ask folks to send me a picture of their bench and believe me, I have seen some messy ones. :-)
I have no idea Ariel! I thought at first I wouldn't be able to hang anything in the open like this, but I said I would try it and if I saw the start of any infestation I would bag them and put in plastic totes. But that was about five years ago and I've had no insects at all bother them. My tying room is in the basement too... and I get plenty of crawling insects down here. But never any flying ones. Maybe I'm just lucky. :-)
@@SavageFlies You are lucky. I don't know how many other have had this problem, but I've purchased professionally cured feather and fur and had to throw away about 2000.00 worth of stuff last summer. After that little fiasco I bought moth balls, bagged everything and haven't had a problem since... except for my bank account. It's a bitch replacing all my dark Coq D' Leon especially. Ugggg Bugs... we love them on the water, but hate them on our materials. LOVE THE VIDEO'S!!!

Killer setup, love it!
Way more organized than my bench. Nice MAD Magazine pictures ny tje way!
Ha! Thanks Jim. I've been a MAD Magazine fan forever. :-)
Thanks for sharing your tying room Matt. It's always nice to see how other tyers organize and work. I must say your tying room is really really clean. I'd share a video of my own, but I'd need a couple of days to clean it up. Cheers
Thanks Darren! You know I was familiar with your site (as many tiers are I'm sure), and was impressed with your Streamers 365 project a few years ago. And I'm ashamed to say I had forgotten about it until seeing this comment. Now I'm going to refamiliarize myself with them-- I just picked up the three volumes. And looking forward to checking them out in detail tonight. Thanks for the comment my friend. Cheers. -Matt
@@SavageFlies Thanks Matt. S365 was a lot of fun. It'll be archived on Global Fly Fisher in the near future. Do you mind if I send you an email, I wanted to run an idea by you. Cheers
@@PiscatorFlies -Not at all! Drop a note anytime to matt@savageflies.com.
Great set up
Thanks Victor! Appreciate you watching my friend.
Very impressive. Please, no one ever mention this video to my wife. She has already seen this with RC Planes and Reloading equipment. But, boys and their toys. Here we go again. 😂
Wow that’s awesome and very helpful.
Thanks James! I may have to do a video like this every year as I change things up all the time. :-)
That was a load of fun 🤩!
Thanks Trent! Appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
That's a cool room you have Matt
My wife and I share a room and I have a small corner to work in
Thanks Dave. For many years I had one tote for everything and all the stuff inside in shoe boxes and baggies. I'd just spread it out all over the kitchen table when I wanted to tie! :-)
I appreciate the video set up
Matt amazing room everything is completely organized rm is completely white glove squared away.
Cheers. -Matt
thanks Matt.
@@SavageFlies enjoy dinner Matt! Yeah, feeling excited about both accounts hitting 1K soon. Good job!
Do you tie reaching over the background panel? Would like a behind the scenes episode on how you film and tie…start to finish.
Love the set up
Thanks man. Yeah, I'm pretty lucky to have a room I can pretty much dedicate to a hobby. :-)
@@SavageFlies Yeah, depression era parents for me. Your idea sounds good :o)
Very nice! My setup is in my wood shop. Not nearly as organized! 🤣
Well, I've got a room in the basement. You have a wood shop! I would LOVE to have a wood shop. I would love to have a lathe and planer. I've never used either but always thought you could make some really cool stuff with them. Maybe when I retire... (but then again, I've got too many hobbies already.) :-)
Huh. That hackle pliers in a box thing...you could make a really interesting shadow box with those.
Thanks for the ideas love my condiment containers too! Hackle plier tray is awesome any info on that?
Thanks for watching my friend, and for the tips for other tiers!
Love your videos my friend, another great one. Keep them coming, love watching your videos. Keep up the hustle :) 🙂
Thank you Ahmet; much appreciated!
nice set up do you have any black squirrel tails
Thanks John! And I do not have any black squirrel tails... I've got several dyed colors: pink, yellow, green, red, but no black. I'll bet black squirrel tail would make some pretty cool hair wing streamers. Do you have any and if so, what do you tie with it?
@@SavageFlies we have alot of black squirrel around my home hunting ground i could sent you one if you like we also get a brown ones too
@@john-tb3ik John- that would be awesome! Send me an email at matt@savageflies.com and we can swap info. I'll send you some starling after I get it dyed yellow if you want to tie up some of the yellerhammers I hope to do. (As soon as I can do the dying, which I've never attempted before. But it doesn't look too hard.)
Where did you get that hackle clip kit that thing is cool.
Thanks Steven, and yeah I love these clips. I mainly use them to hold the flies I just tied. I got it from Amazon: amzn.to/3aC53mb
Can you do a video on how to frame files?
Sure thing... I'll add that to the to-do list. I've got the DIY dubbing one first, and then one on dyeing materials, but maybe I can do a shadow box one over Christmas break. It's really not too hard. Cheers. -Matt
Now I am even more jealous ! Do you hunt or trap to harvest pelts or road kills?
I pick up plenty of (fresh) roadkill and trap smaller critters but haven't really hunted in many years. But I do have friends who'll save me their deer tails. I should probably get into upland game bird hunting but I'm not sure I can afford a new sport. 😁 Thanks for the note!
I feel better now about my material acquisition habit.
Hahaha! Mine has only gotten worse in the two years since I made this video. :-) I'm almost scared to make an update to this!
@@SavageFlies in photography it’s known by the acronym GAS, gear acquisition syndrome…
Love your setup! How difficult is it to reach around your backdrop to tie?
Thanks Kenny. It's not that difficult. It took a little getting used to, and occasionally I'll bump it when I'm tying but it's not hard to work around.
How do you delouse the furs that were found as road kill or have harvested.
Dennis- after I cut the fur into small enough pieces to put in Ziploc bags, I'll just put in the freezer for a couple of days. Especially for anything harvested in the summer. If it was a winter pelt I don't usually do anything after letting it dry out.
Matt what are some of good fly tying lights, any info would be great thanks Matt
@@SavageFlies Thanks for the info I had a a wall mount and it broke, looking at ones to mount on my vise
or wall again
And the mention about shadow boxes
I haven't forgotten about the shadow boxes Thomas! I've got the DIY material dyeing next but should be able to get to it early in 2021. :-)
@@SavageFlies oh I'm not worried, I'm enjoying all the videos coming out.
A lot of camera jitter, use one of your tri-pods to hold and pan with a steady motion.
Thanks.
@@SavageFlies 🌴 ha yea , I’m already looking for a bigger cabinet 🤣👍🏼
0:45 I have three cats- I can’t bring a feather in the house with attracting attention. I wait until the cats are napping in another room before tying.
Ha! If I'm careless and leave my bench a mess overnight, I might find that my cats have decided to play with every feather that was out. It forces me to keep a neater bench. :-)
Don Pepino pizza sauce is the best.
Ha! You got that right! I haven't even talked about my spaghetti can in any videos yet. That's where I put the flies that are so bad I won't even put them in any fly box. Every once in a while I'll scrape the materials off these monstrosities and salvage the hooks. :-)
I look forward to the dying videos. I'm wanting to do some as well.
My tying bench currently resides under a giant pile of fluff and feathers. 😐
Jason- you're not the only one! For the bigger giveaways on the channel, I ask folks to send me a picture of their bench and believe me, I have seen some messy ones. :-)
OMG if I hung up my feather and fur I'd have the whole population of moths in the continental USA living in my den. How do you deal with those pest?
You don’t have a girl Matt? Haha. Great tour
Thanks Scott! And oh yeah, my honey lets me keep my sweet tying room. 👍
