    You’re absolutely right about this being a golden age for flight sim. I’m another old timer and when I think about how far the sims have come it absolutely blows me away. As far as spouses supporting the habit, I’m really lucky in that regard. I stopped flying (for real) when we got married and had a daughter, and she has been wonderful in supporting my simming in part because of the reasons you mentioned. One single flight hour costs as much as I spend in a whole year on DCS, plus I don’t have to carry insurance, keep my medical up to date, and she knows exactly where I am (in the basement with my toys). I do have my eye on the forthcoming Yaw2 seat, it looks a lot more solid than the first version and combined with VR it would be about as good as it gets. And speaking of VR, there are some compromises you have to make to manage some things in DCS but it radically changes the nature of the experience. It is another area where I think we can expect to see some great improvements over the next couple of years. Great times!

    I agree with the F/A-18 as a first full fidelity module. One other thing that gets overlooked is the sheer amount of training content available to new F/A-18 pilots. There are far more training videos, community training classes for both groups and individuals as well as there just having so many more other people flying Hornets. It's so much easier to find a flying buddy in the F/A-18 than anything else.

    • @torreypine
      @torreypine 3 года назад

      Probably true. But that jet is so not-fun to fly. I regret purchasing it and putting the time in to learn it. The Viper is a little race car--truly fun and there's not so much there to learn that you'll be overwhelmed (damnation by faint praise; what have those dedicated F-16 resources been doing?) And the Hog is so deep it's a really good experience. Try one of those and you'll never go back to the Hornet again.

    • @StrikeWeasel15
      @StrikeWeasel15 3 года назад +1

      @@torreypine I am a F-16 main so I understand your point. I'd still send new players to the F/A-18 first though.

    I just got all upgraded to my virpil cm3 throttle and both control consoles last week... now they announce a collective. I have my controls mounted to my chair.... I'm gonna need another chair for that collective.... my wife is going to strangle me with all my usb cables.... your updates are some of the best part of my week... but you're kind of a bad influence! You fuel my addictions! Lol.

    • @tomaszwota1465
      @tomaszwota1465 3 года назад +2

      Yeah, the USB management is the worst part of the hobby.
      In case I ever jumped from VR to simpit making (ain't happening) I'd have to figure some way around it.
      Then again, in a simpit it's "just" a task of cable management that are hidden under the hood.

    • @roguereaper1330
      @roguereaper1330 3 года назад

      @@tomaszwota1465 I fly in vr as well. All my cables leading from chair to USB hub and pc are wrapped in a velcro sleeve. Still working out a permanent solution to cable management. Since I don't use a desk, this is challenging. Lol.

    • @tomaszwota1465
      @tomaszwota1465 3 года назад

      @@roguereaper1330 I don't use a desk either, my temporary solution isn't pretty. Just a few wooden boards that I screwed the throttle and joystick on, so that they're always in the same place, super stable.
      I have made button boxes before, and I even started making an F/A-18 right console, but... You know, VR happened, I don't want to fly any other way. Physical consoles would be awesome, and I'd enjoy building a simpit, I'm sure, but... That damn VR.

    I bought heaps of stuff in the sale, first aircraft was the Huey for a week but I was itching to fly fixed wing, I picked the hornet because it’s more complete than the Viper, multirole, can be carrier launched which adds more things to learn, happy to report after a solid week of flying it, I did my first carrier landing, at night last night and got the 2 wire. Now I’m trying to wrap my brain around the air to air systems and radar so I don’t have to turn tail and run when I get caught ground pounding. [edit] I should also add that I’m Australian, we actually still fly the legacy hornets and are only just now phasing them out in favor if the f35. So that was also a deciding factor or the Viper may have been my choice...

    I started in DCS with the A-10c and for me, it was a big mistake, even though I was an IT person, I struggled with it mainly trying to get my HOTAS bound to do everything required of the many systems and understanding all the stuff integral to DCS itself at the same time. I quit for a couple of years and then, being stubborn, and wanting to fly real bad, I decided I would not let it beat me and I bought a M2000c Mirage and the joy came back to me and I never looked back and even got back into the Wart Hog and learned all the systems and flew it also.

    In the year or so that i've been flying DCS, i've bought all the airframes except for the JF17. But my 1st full fidelity module simply had to be the Spitfire.
    As a post script to your last comment regarding the quality of visuals within DCS, I can tell you that i'm in my late 50s now and have been gaming on various consols and platforms since the mid/late 1970s. The absolute best "bang for the buck" in DCS is to purchase the "Flaming Cliffs" module - but those aren't high fidelity aircraft..."F18" is 100% the best high fidelity module to purchase first.
    You have access to Carrier Ops, Multi-role functionality, and the widest range of add-on scenarios and Campaigns..
    It's not even close - get the F18 and work your way up from there.

  • @aldeng3608
    @aldeng3608 3 года назад +5

    The F18 is the most versatile aircraft in the game, but it's complicated to the point of being overwhelming for new people. In my opinion, the F-5 is definitely the best first hi-fi module. That or of course the A4 Skyhawk mod, which has the added benefit of being completely free.

    I started with ED in 2006 Flaming cliffs 1.12 and have stayed constant with them. So my first full fidelity module was ED's first KA -50 then there was the A-10C warthog and from there it was full steam ahead.

    First module was the A-10C. Found it not to hard to learn. Maybe because that is was the only module that I owned for 3/4 year. People should stick to one module to learn in good. At least for me it's hard to learn multiple modules at te same time.

    My first full fidelity module was the Tomcat and it was awesome learning about its old avionics and Systems. I’m gonna wait till 2.7 clouds are updated to a more realistic look and feel with cumulus clouds and layers within the clouds that are actually fun to surf around and when they sort out VR issues. It's the year of the rotorcraft. At this point the KA-50 is a fantasy heli, but it's done it's job to give an attack heli option for over a decade while they get to the point where they can offer real world helicopters that have actually entered mass production. Being a fantasy heli doesn't mean that it's easy to fly, it will challenge most virtual pilots unless you're making/flying easy missions. Now if we could get the Hind and Apache into the game, and can someone please get working on a Cobra? I think I heard the damn thing went and got itself retired, so there should be declassified materials out there.

    F/A-18 is way too hard to start. It was my first module and I don't regret buying it because I wanted Carrier Operations.
    But it would have been way easier to start with a cold war aircraft like the F-5.

      @J D The F/A-18 is nothing close to "easy" to learn. Being relatively modern, multi-role and carrier based make it one of the most - if not the most - complicated module.
      The amount of tutorial content is a double edged arguments as it also shows how complicated the plane is.
      If you started with the F-5 or similar, you would have a much smoother learning curve into DCS.

    Can someone help me with a problem in DCS? One day ago i bought Heatblurs F14. I dont own a trackir. Only my hotas. The problem is, that i can only move my head by using my mouse. How can i use my hotas to move my head? I would be glad, if someone could name the needed commands.

      Bind your pov keybinds to pov buttons on your hotas

      @@emknight84 And which filter should i use to finde the right keybinds? Axis, Cockpit? And how are these keybinds named?

      @@schaenderdesabschaums9023 You have to go to your control options, the view commands are under the category view. (View down, View up etc.) you can map those commands to a 8 pos pov hat switch on your hotas for example. Another option is to use a joystick axis if you have an extra one (PlayStation-Controller-like), but right now it is only possible to map this as an absolute command, so if you move the joystick to the right, you will look to the back of your cockpit in all cases. These are axis commands like I said and can be found under the name "Absolute Camera [...] View". Best way is the first option imo.
