Using a leather strop is one of the best ways to hone your knife or axe to a razor edge. Using a strop regularly will prevent the need for frequent sharpening and will prolong the service life of your tools. There are two basic types of strops and it is important to choose the right strop based on the grind of your blade. Let's discuss what type of strop to use with different grinds.

This is absolutely hands down the BEST demonstration and explanation of strops and blade grinds I've seen online. You are an outstanding teacher!
I like this guy, he gives very useful information and in a way that's easy to understand.
I am sure glad I found your channel or whatever it's called. The way you explain is PERFECT! THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am now a loyal subscriber. God bless you.
Thank you, this is the first time I've heard anything about why to use one type over the other. So helpful!
Awesome Daly! I am glad this one was helpful for you and I hope the info will serve you well. I appreciate you tuning in and sharing a kind word!
MT man here good vid u got 2 👍👍 UP HERE
Great vid mate - very clear no mucking around.

Thank you for the education on sharpening. Subbed.
Outstanding video. You are a good teacher.
Flex cut gold works really good
Just subscribed. Very informative video. Thanks.
Thank you so much Ronnie! Welcome sir!
Great video, and well demonstrated. I'm really digging that knife. I always learn a little more when I watch your videos brother.
Thank you so much for the kind words Torren! I always appreciate you taking the time to tune in brother!
Matt, I'm really enjoying your channel, brother. You deserve 50x more subscribers! Hope all is well with you and yours. God bless!
Veggie tanned leather or tooling leather is the best leather to use. I don't know if using a strap is any better than using a block. I use a block set up, I siliconed a piece of leather( veggie tanned) to my flattening stone used to dress stones, on the flat side not used. Now it's dual purposed.
Thank you very much matt. I tend to stay away from strops because it puts a micro bevel on my knife. Since I do a lot of wood working it unfortunately does not work for me. I just do 20 strokes on a 8000 grit stone. Have a wonderful week. - Josh
Awesome job Matt.
Thank you for this!!! My dad always did all the sharpening around here...so now I am trying to master and maintain a NICE edge on all my blades, shovels, garden hoe ..next is the mower blades!! Lol habe a great day!
Absolutely! I appreciate you taking the time to tune in! I hope this will help a little in your efforts. The shovels, hoe and lawn mower blade, we'll have to cover in a different video lol! Take care my friend.
Black Hat Bushcraft I got the shovel, hoe all sharpened... it's my collection of dull knives that need work!!! Thanks so much!
Very good advice. Well done video.
Lonnie, I could not think of a more fitting tribute for Black Hat Bushcraft than a positive comment from you. In my opinion, both great outdoor RUclips channels. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Frank for the kind words.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch Lonnie! I truly appreciate your kind words my friend.
Thank you Frank and I agree 100%! I am honored by each and every subscriber I have but it is always nice to see someone who you respect greatly taking the time to watch and comment on your channel! It also shows what a genuine person Lonnie is to take that time and make the effort to interact with a small channel like mine. It is most appreciated:)
Black Hat Bushcraft The size of ones channel often times has very little to do with the persons knowledge. Mors Kochanski's channel is an example. He probably is one of the most knowledgeable people in the world today on bushcraft, survival and wilderness living. Yet Mors channel is still not very large. I enjoy learning and realize that we all learn from each other. Keep on keeping on and continue doing what you do.
Super job Matt!
Great instruction. Thanks!
Thank you so much for tuning in! I appreciate your kind words.
Nice one 👍 good advice
Thank you so much Jonah! I appreciate your time my friend.
Great video!
ya good video, maybe Im getting the hang of stropping, it takes some practice, I have a block strop and a belt strop, Im finding I am rolling over the edge when using the belt strop, more experience needed
I subbed brother!
Matt, you're always very informative. I didn't see these strops on your Amazon influencer page. Can you post links to these 2?
Thank you so much Paul! I appreciate your kind words! I appreciate you checking me out on Amazon as well. I will add two links in the description box. If you go to the Amazon page, check the category for Tool Sharpening and Honing. Both my paddle strop and barber strops are listed there. The paddle that I am using now is made by BUTZ. It is the best I have found. Thanks again! Take care.
I have never used a strop before and don't have one. My question for you is, can I use and old belt, or do I need to buy a official strop. Thank you!
Yes sir, as long as it is a leather belt, you can use the backside and hone with it. I have done this many times. Just be aware of the grind of your knife. If it is a Scandinavian grind, you may not want to hone it too much on the belt as it will convex it slightly over time. The paddle strop is the best tool really for Scandi grinds. In a pinch in the field though, it is a good way to improvise. Thank you for your time and interest!
Another great video. Where I find knife 🔪 the one you are using. I've tried to Pathfinders school store but they don't show any knives sheath-knives not even seen the one from Dave that talks about two different ones. If you can find the time to give me a lead on where to find a knife like you're using and a single wall metal water bottle 32 oz. I'd appreciate it. Gingdah 🚶💀
You do a great job with the information you provide and the way you present the facts. What you have relayed to viewers of your channel corresponds to my thoughts and beliefs. Could I ask one favour - when demonstrating sharpness, I realize shaving sharp is depicted by cutting arm hair, but could it be more safely shown by tilting a fingernail downward and resting just the weight of the blade on the nail. A suitably sharp knife will stay there, while a duller knife will slide off. Not a criticism here - just worried about the neophyte who tries that with a dull knife, gets frustrated, tries harder and ends up with a serious injury. One would think I was somehow familiar with this concept - not admitting anything mind you, just saying LOL
I definitely hear what you are saying Frank and I appreciate the feedback:) I actually use that test often myself because I hate having bald spots on my arm:) I really appreciate your kind words and your support watching my videos. Take care my friend!
Great vid matt and is that a BHK battlelore?
So confusing. I see more often than not to never strop a scandi. I wish I knew for sure. Are you saying the block strop won’t impact the blade geometry on the scandi. I know the strop always works on the convex but I’ve heard often the strop will screw up the scandi ??
The purpose of the paddle/block strop is to maintain a straight bevel. It is for a scandi grind really. It will not work well with a convex. The belt strop is needed for convex to maintain the proper geometry. So scandi on the paddle/block and convex on the belt is absolutely the correct way to use these. I hope that helps.
Enjoyed the video. What brand of knife is that? Thanks
Thank you so much Robert! I appreciate you taking the time to tune in. This one is a custom made by a gentleman in Pasadena Ca. I hope to do a full review soon.
I will be watching. Thanks
