Happy to help. Was worried I'd be more annoying than helpful. Wishing I had a longer strop now that I'm watching this again. I'll make another. Mine is plywood and the laminations got weird on the handle.
Not annoying at all. I want to know when somethings not right, so I can fix it. Sounds like the laminations are separating on the strop. Time to whip up a new one.
Not being rude, but you got paddled in 8th grade? I'm pretty sure I was challenging the principal to fight in the parking lot at that age. I'm not sure which story is worse. I guess the moral of the story is that kids are punks. Also, I thought that looked a lot like a paddle. I'll 100% be teasing with my son when I end up building this.
Dude, enjoyed the video. I've got my great grandfather's shaving razor sharpening stone that's made into a hand carved box. It HAS a leather strop built on, like you did yours in the video. Not sure how old it is, but he died a month short of the end of the First World War. How can I rehab the leather etc to make it useable? Thx, Tony Parr
Thats awesome you got your Great Grandfathers shaving things. For the strop, I would think you could use some leather dressing, or neatsfoot oil to recondition the leather. It might take a few times for it to soak in enough conditioner. I have always liked Lexol leather conditioner. It seems to really soften it up well.
First time viewer and now subscriber : ) - Thanks for posting this great video! I couldn't find the template you used for the strop tool on your website. Could please point me the right direction?
Thank You and Welcome. The template I used was just one I quickly came up with. Its not listed on the site. The strop dimensions are approximately 18" x 2" x 3/4". For the handle, you can make it whatever shape feels good to you. I tapered mine in to about 1" wide and a little bit longer than the width of my hand. I hope that helps. Have some fun in shaping it.
For these, I glued down the rough side but you can use either side. I like to polish on the smooth side as it seems a little finer. You could even make one that is 2 sided with one side rough, and one side smooth.
With all due respect, you don't need dimensions. Cut the board to a length just a bit longer than how far you would stroke the knife. It's supposed to be custom made for your needs, then just cut a handle and viola. Having the board be an inch wider or longer isn't going to make much difference on the actual function.
@@1cleandude I can only imagine how anxious you get about food recipes online. Lol... I am a visual learner, so it's easy for me to watch and follow. Hey, thanks for the vid.....often wondered about how a leather strop should be used. Thanks from the UK
Good job!

Thanks, I'm glad it helped.
Very simple
Thanks
Thanks. Great easy step video
Thank You!
Did you put boiled linseed oil on the leather part too or just the wood?
Linseed oil on the wood. I used polishing compound on the leather.
Do you but the rough side up or the fine side of the leather ? Nice video
Great video
Thank You. 👍
I’ve got my leather and glue coming in today from Amazon, I have a board already, now I just have to stain it. Good video, I like your shop and tools.
Thanks, Have fun making your strop.

That's cool.
Does leather works without polish compound..??
I believe so, it just might take a bit longer.
I’m going to sound like the noob that I am, but will any leather do, or is there something specifically I need to look for?
I believe any kind will work. If its thinner though, it may not be as durable. That may or may not be an issue though. I'd use whatever you have.

You are welcome. 👍
I think the first blade you need to sharpen is your utility knife blade or just change the blade.
Came for a leather video and got a woodworking video.
Dont worry, I'm going to be trying some leatherwork real soon. 👍
What leather did you use?
This was just a scrap of something I had in the shop. You can use just plain veg tanned leather. It works great.
What side of the leather did you glue DOWN ?
For these, I glued down the rough side but you can use either side. I like to polish on the smooth side as it seems a little finer. You could even make one that is 2 sided with one side rough, and one side smooth.
What is that green thing could someone say
what epoxy did you use?
thanks. I'm just trying to understand the different kind of epoxies and what they are used for.@@homebuiltshop

Jack Miller with epoxies, it’s basically just a ratio or balance of open working time and tensile strength that you need for the project at hand.
Eyup Jeff. Think I could do with one of those now I'm into knife making. Do you think a regular old leather belt would do the trick?
Steve, I do think a belt would work just fine as long as its smooth leather. You can whip one up in no time. 👍
@@homebuiltshop Thanks mate 👍👍
What is the green polishing compound you use at the end?
Its a green jewelers rough. A fine buffing compound.
@@homebuiltshop where can I can find something like that?
@@KingGeorge24
Heya king,
You can get it on amazon!
Is that beaver pelt leather or what?
Its just regular leather as far as I know. It was part of a grab bag I got at my local leather shop.
It looks a little bit retro. But exactly this is it! I like it.
What do you need to keep in mind when picking a piece of leather?
I would just go for a piece of vegetable tanned leather. As long as its not paper thin, it should be just fine. Most anything should work great.
