D Rod I’m just like you I commuted from DFW-SEA once a week on the Big Jet Aircraft. Had my Walkman plug into their albums the entire trip. Time flew by and I always thought I was so lucky to be hearing such a great toon to take my mind away from the four hours ahead of me. Thanks for the reminder. We are so lucky Mark is such a artist.
Today May 5th 2023 I was reading the introduction to a book titled NORTH CAROLINA SLAVE NARRATIVES (William Andrews) that mentioned this Mason Dixon line. Looking up the history of this historical line led me to this beautifully remarkable song “Sailing to Philadelphia” by Mark Knopfler. Wow! Music. Lyrics. Can’t wait to hear his other songs.
Why does this song always choke me up. The power of a musical master. His voice is as convincing as his guitar and lyrics. My ancestor sailed from Northumbria in 1677 to Delaware.
This is such a gorgeous song. I’m directly related to one of the fellows this song is about, waaaayyy up there on one of the higher branches of my family tree -- so, it almost goes without saying that I pop on this song now and again whenever I find myself driving alone through Pennsylvania. Whether we realize it or not, all of us have sailed to Philadelphia in our own ways, and in whatever multitudes of forms this sentiment may take; whether via our hearts, our ancestors, or directly. Mark Knopfler is a treasure.
Precision. Everything precision. Always genius! I've been a Mark fan from the first note of Sultans back in 1978. Just heard an interview by Tim O'brien, who played with him for a short stint back in the 2000's. Said they rehearsed 6 days a week for 3 weeks before going out on the road, with Mark paying attention to every detail including the lights.
A wonderful variation of this great song. Thanks for this song, thanks for all of your songs, Mark. Part of my life since I've heard your songs first time in 1984, aged 15!
Wish they taught history in chronological order.... The lessons are there if we are willing to open our heart. Peace be with you minstrel Thank you for beautiful
Que Shoow! Sua sensibilidade ,inteligência e talento faz toda diferença. Grandioso Mark. Obrigada maestro por tão lindas composições e por seus grandes feitos. Parabéns. Bravoo. ❤ 🎶 🎸 🎸 ❤ 👏
Just spine-tinglingly good. Nothing less than a genius of the guitar and realises perhaps more than any other that using it to tastefully embellish good storytelling is worth so much more than pure fretboard wanking.
While I really enjoy this song, Ive gotten use to the version on Telegraph Road with James Taylor. I get into a good sing along session but when he does the storytelling aspect, I'm just lost. LOL. What in the world do I do with this?
I have had a 40 yr fascination with this brilliant man. From listening on my walkman on long bus rides home from college to this moment.
Such an amazing musician… I feel the same thing! What a nice comment D Rod!!

What can one say about this man which hasn't been said before, absolute perfection in song writing and guitar playing. Thank you Mark Knopfler
This is how all history should be taught.
I agree!
Take a listen to:
1894 - Lighthouse
