No matter how cool the previous parts and even GTA 5 were... This game is forever in my heart, as an example of a game that was approached with attention to details. I still play it and don't regret that I replay it so many times.

The story of Niko in GTA 4 is the saddest and most dramatic of all parts. The only character from the entire GTA series that I empathized with (Well, maybe even johnny) I believe that he is the most well-written character with all the history and philosophy. Remember the moment with Darko Brevich. We are not given money for just killing Darko, and we are faced with a moral choice that depends on the player. The dialogues between Nico and the characters (especially with Roman) feel alive and I'm glad that this game is not forgotten and despite all the negativity around it, it has a circle of fans who still love it and perhaps even consider it the best.

I love how the game doesn't simply have a "revenge bad" message, but a nuanced standpoint on revenge, all of this stuff like shooting Darko twelve times, chasing him for years upon years to try and gain revenge, all of it simply just doesn't change anything. Niko kills the man who ruined his life, who betrayed him and his friends for a thousand dollars. And it changes nothing. The game simply continues, Niko doesn't avenge anyone, he just kills another person, no one comes back. And that is brilliant.
To me it's a reminder of how strong the gta community is. The fact that these guys had time to put together something like this makes the term of "impressive" not enough to describe it.
right on sad to see that this game really never got the support from rockstar it deserved. This game was made in 2008 but it can be very relateble even today unfortunatly we may never get such a game like this that is grounded in a realistic story.

GTA 4 was more of an experimental game to test the HD graphics potential and removing many features that San Andreas had. GTA 5 is the finished product.
We have 3 more locations, Las Venturas, San Fierro and Vice City. They seem like vibrant areas, but they could import some dark and serious stuff aswell, maybe even stuff like Manhunt did. But...

You can feel his pain in this song... There's indeed no happy ending to Niko's story. If he tries to give up criminal life, his girlfriend dies killed by his former boss. If he chooses to be a criminal forever, his girlfriend dumps him and one of his associates betrays him killing his cousin. The moral of Niko's journey is crime doesn't pay, choices have consequences and victory always comes at a cost. This game showed something no other GTA game had: maturity, dark themes and realism instead of just being another unrealistic parody of our society. Though I loved SA and Vice City for their story they are no match for GTA 4 storyline. GTA 5 plot is just meh instead...

tws I love playing gta 5 online but as far as stories go, gta 4 had the best by far and it’s one I will never forget playing through. I would love to replay this game now that I’m older. Can’t believe it’s been 11-12 years

The reason why GTA 4 theme sounds so dark and depressing compared to those of the other GTA games is that there is no happy ending to Niko's story... If he chooses to be a criminal forever, his girlfriend dumps him and his cousin gets killed from one of his associates who betrays him (Dimitri). If he decides to change life and live like a normal person with Kate as his girlfriend, the mob boss Jimmy Pegorino won't allow him to just walk away from criminal life, and as a payback he will kill Kate. Niko will eventually get his revenge on the killer of his cousin/girlfriend but he will still lose one of the persons he cared the most in the game. Either way it is a tragic end to a tragic character considering all the dramatic events Niko went through before the game (the war) and during the game itself. And that's why GTA 4 is by far the most serious and realistic game in the series, not to mention the best one for the story.

Yes. Life is complicated indeed. Sometimes there is no good choice. Like in the game. You either lose girlfriend or your cousin. You cannot save both. Is i me or when Niko talks about the "fifty children" he implies that he killed them? Because he replies "the creature that did this [possibly me] doesn't have a soul" to the question "do you worry about your soul"?

Revenge ending is way better. Niko and Kate finally become a couple at Roman's wedding, even if just briefly, since Kate gets killed by Pegorino cause Niko didn't do the deal for him prefering to have his revenge on Dimitri, but at least Roman is alive and tells him he will call his daughter like Niko's late girlfriend... In Deal Kate dumps Niko cause he chose money and criminal life over her and Roman is killed by a russian hitman because Dimitri betrays him. Niko is left sad and alone and Roman dies without ever even knowing his wife was pregnant in Deal.

i feel like the deal ending is what really happened in the story. because it feels more real. its one of the most powerful game scenes ever. The way they turn a celebration into a funeral in less than 10 seconds; Mallorie's scream, Niko letting the corpse have it with an emotionless face, the camera NOT showing Roman getting shot, Jacob trying to calm Niko down, everyone else comforting Mallorie.
Revenge is what Niko would have done considering his story and personality he was never after money and he isn't the kind of guy who just forgets and moves on. Leaving Dimitri alive would have been a huge risk considering everything he and Roman went through because of him I knew that ever since the first time I completed the game and that's why I chose Revenge. Also a Easter egg in GTA 5 implies Roman is alive since we can see Jimmy checking Niko's profile page on lifeinvader and wishing Roman a happy birthday, meaning he is still alive in GTA 5 and that Revenge ending is the one that happened. Even though GTA 4 has no good ending, Deal is considered the bad/depressing ending while Revenge is more of a good/bittersweet ending.
I prefer the deal ending too. I never really cared much for Kate and the italian guy i cant even remember and he definitely wasnt the main antagonist. It hurts alot to see Roman die, hes at the heart of the story. Also I love the juxtaposition of Niko when he first gets off the boat saying to Roman "What is it cousin have you forgot our language" and the last thing he says to Dimitri at the end is "This is America, speak english" its poetic, Niko's arc in this story makes so much more sense
Agreed. It feels complete and fits very well with the American Dream message than the other one. Roman & Niko's greed kill them both. (Roman's body & Niko's soul)
I remember choosing Deal, not knowing Roman was gonna die. I was so happy during the wedding scene but when I saw Roman's dead body, I just felt dead inside. And the final cutscene after killing Dimitri and hearing Mallorie was pregnant, I just started crying. Roman is and will always will be my favorite character in GTA 4.

Niko and Roman reminds me a lot me and my sister, me knowing how dark life is, being betrayed by my own parents and my sister helping people, believing that life can be shinny and perfect if you help people, they always will help you, they never will turn against you if you treat them with respect, Roman wasn't exactly like that but they believied that things can be good when they were far from good. My sister even din't realized when humans started to use her to do stupid things, they were using her kidness, I on the other hand was angry at humans and I wanted revenge on them how they were treating me. We both needed to understand that hatred isn't good but what also isn't good is being helpful and kind for everyone every time.
Tbh yh, both are depressing but I honestly had zero attachment to Kate. She literally just kept cock blocking me after every date, would constantly refer to Niko's way of life and how bad it was and yet still hang out with him. I feel bad for Packie, but not for Kate. Even Kiki's better than Kate imo.
GTA IV is so underrated. I really wish that rockstar would remaster this game , it brings back so much nostalgic childhood memories. I especially miss how you can do many methods to complete missions, and make them less frustrating. Hands down one of Rockstars best games ever.

I just finished the game so I may be late, but damn it’s so dark man, after seeing this ending. I’m glad I put dimitri six feet down under before the wedding, I listened to jacob, kate, and not roman. Otherwise I get this ending.. I’m not as sad about kate’s death because I met her mid game or near end game so I don’t remember, but roman… nah man, I can’t take it. At first, he was really annoying, but later on I grew a liking into him. Felt connected, and loved him like a brother. Losing kate is less painful because as Later on after the game, I still have roman, and others to hang out with. Roman has been with me, since the beginning. GTA iv gameplay so realistic, it made me feel bad killing unarmed pedestrians, when I need a car I aim at the driver and make him come out, if he duck in his car I just open the door, and let him out. I only kill criminals, policemen, and any armed people who threatens me. This game is different than 3D GTA games, It changed my perspective. High jacking a car made me feel like cops are watching me. Just damn incredible this game is man, I’m just glad I put my hands on it even though it’s out in 2008… I hate it when there are choices you have to make in the game, but that’s what makes it so goood. Love this game so much. Reading emails from his mom, and everything just hits me in the feels, and when finished replying and leaving the internet cafè, get in a car listening to Vladivostok radio, I hear Basta Mama playing… incredible

I'm currently playing through the story again, just finished Tunnel of Death. Edit: I finished the game, chose Revenge Ending, started The Lost and Damned and finished till Bad Standing, after finishing that, I'll start The Ballad of Gay Tony. Edit: I have finished the entire completed edition without using any cheats, but god damn, Sexy Time was tough.

When I saw 1:26 I must have thinking about Big Smokes qoute " same things make us laugh and same things make us cry" how often Roman ask us to go bowling and it was just annoying in a funny way but with this piano in the Bowling bar it show us that it is just sad being without him even in the Bowling bar.
I don't know why people don't like gta 4. It has darker storyline than any other gta. The physics, side characters, protagonist background, everything is perfect. And the last it's a game with a damn sad ending. My favourite gta after San Andreas.

People don't gta 4 because the map is quite small after Gta San Andreas being released.Gta San Andreas also has more side missions.But Gta 4 is really great in my opinion.The story is the most compelling compared to other Gta Series.Niko is the best Rockstar character after Arthur Morgan

This is one of my favorite video game themes of all time. It reflects the tone of the game perfectly, especially matched with an amazing piano arrangement. You feel the greed, the anger, and the sorrow. GTA IV is hands down the best story of any GTA game and is personally one of the best games I've ever played. Well done guys.

@Sergiu Andrei Canon ending is where roman lives but Kate dies, there are things mentioned in GTA 5 that make it the canon ending, like packie being in los santos and niko and romans lifeinvader being active in jimmy's laptop.

I love how the game doesn't simply have a "revenge bad" message, but a nuanced standpoint on revenge, all of this stuff like shooting Darko twelve times, chasing him for years upon years to try and gain revenge, all of it simply just doesn't change anything.
Niko kills the man who ruined his life, who betrayed him and his friends for a thousand dollars.
And it changes nothing. The game simply continues, Niko doesn't avenge anyone, he just kills another person, no one comes back.
And that is brilliant.

GTA VI may be stealing the spotlight now but GTA IV always have a class of its own
right on sad to see that this game really never got the support from rockstar it deserved. This game was made in 2008 but it can be very relateble even today unfortunatly we may never get such a game like this that is grounded in a realistic story.

You can feel his pain in this song... There's indeed no happy ending to Niko's story. If he tries to give up criminal life, his girlfriend dies killed by his former boss. If he chooses to be a criminal forever, his girlfriend dumps him and one of his associates betrays him killing his cousin.
The moral of Niko's journey is crime doesn't pay, choices have consequences and victory always comes at a cost. This game showed something no other GTA game had: maturity, dark themes and realism instead of just being another unrealistic parody of our society. Though I loved SA and Vice City for their story they are no match for GTA 4 storyline. GTA 5 plot is just meh instead...

The reason why GTA 4 theme sounds so dark and depressing compared to those of the other GTA games is that there is no happy ending to Niko's story... If he chooses to be a criminal forever, his girlfriend dumps him and his cousin gets killed from one of his associates who betrays him (Dimitri). If he decides to change life and live like a normal person with Kate as his girlfriend, the mob boss Jimmy Pegorino won't allow him to just walk away from criminal life, and as a payback he will kill Kate.
Niko will eventually get his revenge on the killer of his cousin/girlfriend but he will still lose one of the persons he cared the most in the game. Either way it is a tragic end to a tragic character considering all the dramatic events Niko went through before the game (the war) and during the game itself. And that's why GTA 4 is by far the most serious and realistic game in the series, not to mention the best one for the story.

Niko and Kate finally become a couple at Roman's wedding, even if just briefly, since Kate gets killed by Pegorino cause Niko didn't do the deal for him prefering to have his revenge on Dimitri, but at least Roman is alive and tells him he will call his daughter like Niko's late girlfriend... In Deal Kate dumps Niko cause he chose money and criminal life over her and Roman is killed by a russian hitman because Dimitri betrays him. Niko is left sad and alone and Roman dies without ever even knowing his wife was pregnant in Deal.

i feel like the deal ending is what really happened in the story. because it feels more real. its one of the most powerful game scenes ever. The way they turn a celebration into a funeral in less than 10 seconds; Mallorie's scream, Niko letting the corpse have it with an emotionless face, the camera NOT showing Roman getting shot, Jacob trying to calm Niko down, everyone else comforting Mallorie.
I have to disagree with you. The revenge ending makes more sense for the ending.
Revenge is what Niko would have done considering his story and personality he was never after money and he isn't the kind of guy who just forgets and moves on. Leaving Dimitri alive would have been a huge risk considering everything he and Roman went through because of him I knew that ever since the first time I completed the game and that's why I chose Revenge. Also a Easter egg in GTA 5 implies Roman is alive since we can see Jimmy checking Niko's profile page on lifeinvader and wishing Roman a happy birthday, meaning he is still alive in GTA 5 and that Revenge ending is the one that happened. Even though GTA 4 has no good ending, Deal is considered the bad/depressing ending while Revenge is more of a good/bittersweet ending.
I prefer the deal ending too. I never really cared much for Kate and the italian guy i cant even remember and he definitely wasnt the main antagonist. It hurts alot to see Roman die, hes at the heart of the story. Also I love the juxtaposition of Niko when he first gets off the boat saying to Roman "What is it cousin have you forgot our language" and the last thing he says to Dimitri at the end is "This is America, speak english" its poetic, Niko's arc in this story makes so much more sense

Revenge ending is canon
I remember choosing Deal, not knowing Roman was gonna die. I was so happy during the wedding scene but when I saw Roman's dead body, I just felt dead inside. And the final cutscene after killing Dimitri and hearing Mallorie was pregnant, I just started crying. Roman is and will always will be my favorite character in GTA 4.

Niko and Roman reminds me a lot me and my sister, me knowing how dark life is, being betrayed by my own parents and my sister helping people, believing that life can be shinny and perfect if you help people, they always will help you, they never will turn against you if you treat them with respect, Roman wasn't exactly like that but they believied that things can be good when they were far from good. My sister even din't realized when humans started to use her to do stupid things, they were using her kidness, I on the other hand was angry at humans and I wanted revenge on them how they were treating me. We both needed to understand that hatred isn't good but what also isn't good is being helpful and kind for everyone every time.

GTA IV is so underrated. I really wish that rockstar would remaster this game , it brings back so much nostalgic childhood memories. I especially miss how you can do many methods to complete missions, and make them less frustrating. Hands down one of Rockstars best games ever.

I just finished the game so I may be late, but damn it’s so dark man, after seeing this ending.
I’m glad I put dimitri six feet down under before the wedding, I listened to jacob, kate, and not roman.
Otherwise I get this ending.. I’m not as sad about kate’s death because I met her mid game or near end game so I don’t remember, but roman… nah man, I can’t take it. At first, he was really annoying, but later on I grew a liking into him. Felt connected, and loved him like a brother. Losing kate is less painful because as Later on after the game, I still have roman, and others to hang out with.
Roman has been with me, since the beginning.
GTA iv gameplay so realistic, it made me feel bad killing unarmed pedestrians, when I need a car I aim at the driver and make him come out, if he duck in his car I just open the door, and let him out.
I only kill criminals, policemen, and any armed people who threatens me. This game is different than 3D GTA games, It changed my perspective.
High jacking a car made me feel like cops are watching me.

When I saw 1:26 I must have thinking about Big Smokes qoute " same things make us laugh and same things make us cry" how often Roman ask us to go bowling and it was just annoying in a funny way but with this piano in the Bowling bar it show us that it is just sad being without him even in the Bowling bar.

I don't know why people don't like gta 4. It has darker storyline than any other gta. The physics, side characters, protagonist background, everything is perfect. And the last it's a game with a damn sad ending. My favourite gta after San Andreas.

@@ljp206 agree, the driving and walking physics are too... physical. It doesn't mean that they're too realistic, it only means that all the physical forces are overexaggerated
People don't gta 4 because the map is quite small after Gta San Andreas being released.Gta San Andreas also has more side missions.But Gta 4 is really great in my opinion.The story is the most compelling compared to other Gta Series.Niko is the best Rockstar character after Arthur Morgan

I had that feeling so hard with the Witcher 3. Then I went and bought all the DLC to play but got the same feeling after playing through all of that too.

Currently playing the TLAD and TBOGT for the first time right now. Finished GTA IV up earlier this year.
Grand Theft Auto IV is such an amazing masterpiece and I love its dark and realistic mood. It gave me that real life vibe of how cruel the world is and what it takes to survive in the criminal underworld
There will never be such a masterpiece as GTA IV again.

@James Vaughan gta san andreas is good almost a masterpiece but for me gta 4 is better in terms of the story.

@James Vaughan I thought it was fitting? Everything was finished and done. He had nothing left to do and plus the game had two extra DLC so I think it was fine.
This is one of my favorite video game themes of all time. It reflects the tone of the game perfectly, especially matched with an amazing piano arrangement. You feel the greed, the anger, and the sorrow. GTA IV is hands down the best story of any GTA game and is personally one of the best games I've ever played. Well done guys.

@Sergiu Andrei Canon ending is where roman lives but Kate dies, there are things mentioned in GTA 5 that make it the canon ending, like packie being in los santos and niko and romans lifeinvader being active in jimmy's laptop.
