I didn’t know any of them, but I’ll go to the playlist now. Thanks Marie, hope you’re having a good weekend.
Thank you Marie! This was interesting to learn what French pop music is like. I had not heard of any of these artists before.
One thing about comparing older music to today is that the bad music of earlier years gets forgotten and the better stuff gets remembered. I am a 1962 model and there was a lot of crappy music in the 70s and 80s as well. But it is a wonderful thing that music can be appreciated across the generations. I find the young of today far more open minded to music before their time than my generation was.
I learned the little bit of French I speak listening to Mireille Mathieu. She had such a beautiful, clear voice. I still get a shiver down my spine if I hear her singing A quoi tu penses
Not only are the French Musicians very talelented but very good looking.
Bonjour Marie! Thank you for sharing. Very interesting! I hope that you are doing well. Bonne journee! ~Be Blessed
I agree with you on the older music but of course I would because I'm old. Be safe and stay well.
A French friend just recently introduced me to Indochine, and I am hooked. Thanks for sharing some of your favourite music. 💃
Very good selection....good souvenir...
Have a wonderful and blessed weekend Marie! 😊👍

Love that song!
Nice to listen to YOUR favorites….good music is good music in any language!
Enjoy your videos-
Cool beats, cool jams. 😎.
Thank you for sharing this with us. Usually, it’s you reacting to songs WE like. It was so refreshing to see you open yourself up a bit and share with us the songs that you like. I enjoyed those songs as well . Very well done.😎👍👍👍
Thank you!
FR David's ''Words'' is one of my favourites. Big hit in Australia.
Of several French artists/bands I enjoy, Alizee is hands down the best. Her first two albums were outstanding.
Douliou is a french version of the 1962 cliff Richard hit do you wanna dance. (Do you do you do you do you wanna dance). See YT. Joe le taxi was a hit in England too No 3 in 1988 One of those quirky one-hit wonders that occasionally breaks through. It had that special something. For many years I have been very fond of those wonderful French artists From before the war Charles Trenet. Yvette Montand. Charles Aznavour Tino Rossi. Etc those very melodic Chansons that are so typically french. And of course the women notably Edith Piaf. I wonder if you still hear those songs on the French radio these days if not you are all missing out! I am fortunate that I embrace and enjoy a very wide range of music which gives me great pleasure. If you are not like me I think it’s like living on a diet exclusively of chocolate and wine both very nice but not if you endlessly repeat them with no variation. Oh yes. don’t get me to discuss C rap Whatever it maybe it certainly isn’t music
Only caught one that I knew for sure, maybe two due to what might have been exposed to via movies or clubs. No fault of your own as I will be 50 in two years, lol. Love that after all you do to explore other cultures you shared some of your own. This channel continues to be a great source of fun and education. THANK YOU! I wish you continuing success, and much growth in the future. Please keep up the great work!
I used to listen to Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygen
@Petermorrland I've had in in vinyl for at least 30 years. Great Album.
Here’s a good one for you from the 60s. Written by Serge Gainsbourg. Bridget Bardot. Harley Davidson. She definitely had IT
Thanks Marie, that was all new to me--it was an interesting tour. The first songs we dance to are
like echos from a happy time of life. They stay with us, and are almost always good to hear again
Bonjour, Marie! I just discovered your channel and am enjoying it very much. I had never heard any of these songs before, so I am very glad that you exposed me to them. I love the song "Les Lacs du Connemara" in particular (very interesting tempo changes). Thanks also for the delightful childhood reminiscences about listening to some of these songs in the car with your family.
J'adore 🤩👍💖
Another one I came across which I enjoyed was Garçon by Coxie from the 90s I think Which seemed fun and very French And I believe was a hit
Thank you for that glimpse into French pop. Some of the songs seemed familiar to me - I may have heard them on various visits to Europe in the 80's and 90's. The video was interrupted by an ad, so I certainly hope it has not been demonetized.
Thank you Marie for this video. They were new to me but I can understand why you like them. They sound so good. Keep these videos coming. It was a good idea.
Two French artists made it into British music on the radio in my lifetime (so far!), Vanessa Paradis (Joe le Taxi) and Desireless (Voyage Voyage). I also like Céline Dion's French stuff.
Amazing
Hey 👧, I love ( 💘 ) this video! Pretty cool.
Bonito video, Marie.
My favourite French pop/rock artist from the last century is Francis Cabrel ( he's still going , of course ) But, if I had to pick one song/performance from 1960 on-wards, it would be Julian Clerc singing "Ce n'est rien" Now, that is very French ! ( to my ears)
Another great video Marie. Thank you for sharing and exposing us to French Pop music. I agree with you that older music is better 👌 🤷 I hope you are doing well 🙏 Take care and be safe 🤗
Hello Miss Marie !!! Thank you for letting me See Your love of Music !!!

Watch the movie Beach Blanket Bingo, it's a 1965 surfer movie/love story that is fun, and the stars sing songs reflecting the times. One of the songs you previewed reminded me of this movie. It will be fun for you to react to.
Enjoyed hearing the music that you enjoy. You spend most of your time reacting to music we enjoy, so I wouldn't mind you reacting to music you enjoy. Thank you! 😎
Thank you Marie...I really enjoyed listening to these tunes...:-)
Yep you are right. It’s like the music now is just made to make money and not about the music or the songs or it all sounds the same from one song to the next or from one cd to the next one.
Hey there miss marie🌻
I enjoyed seeing the type of music you grew up with🤗
I still listen to music my parents listened to when they were young.... Take care🌻
Danse tous. Love it, more videos about music please. In English Canada we get very little exposure to French Canadian music, and so much of it is amazing. Keep well.
Merci Marie !
: LEJ, Boulevard des Airs, Coeur de pirate, Madame Monsieur,Hoshi, Calogero,Zaz,Angèle,Clara Luciani, Claire Laffut,Christine and the Queens, Pomme, etc 🥰
--------------
Thanks Marie! If there’s one period of French music that i know the least about, it’s from 1980-2000! I was just too preoccupied with other things!
As a reference for your followers, the French pop artists of my youth were: Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie Vartan, Françoise Hardy, Veronique Sanson, Joe Dassin, Claude Francois and many others - like Plastic Bertrand - “Ça plane pour moi”🤣
- a great dance song 🥰🤩😎.
I agree that there’s alot of lousy music now, but these are a few of the “current” French singers that I really love! : LEJ, Boulevard des Airs, Coeur de pirate, Madame Monsieur,Hoshi, Calogero,Zaz,Angèle,Clara Luciani, Claire Laffut,Christine and the Queens, Pomme, etc🥰
I'm a big fan of Indochine, Christine and The Queens and les Rita Mitsouko.
Just for your information the 19th century was 1801-1899. I think ;you meant the 20th century, which; would be the 1900s. (The first century was year 0-99). Of course we assume AD or CE (Common Era). I didn't catch the word you used at the beginning that must mean "blocked." I replayed a few times but couldn't get it, but got your meaning. Thanks for this video---I found this very interesting!!! Love hearing about French culture!!
Yes, I corrected that on screen :)
I do know some of them. Image, Vanessa Paradis, Joe Dassin. Some made it to the Netherlands. Just like Elsa, Patrick Bruel, France Gall, Mylene Farmer and Allisee for instance. I went to a concert from Vanessa Paradis, and one of Patrick Bruel. That was awsome. There are some awsome French chansons out there.
I recognize the ones from '64 & '69 but I am old. 😊
Sounds like about as young as me. 😁😁😁
Cheers Marie!! This was very informative! Daft Punk and Cassius are the only French artists we got here, basically.
very interesting, and I am in complete agreement with you-why don't we have music like we used to? I think a lot of what we hear today is formula songs i.e.the music producers think we want to listen to the same flavors all the time. Most people I can think of much prefer the kind of music they grew up with, which is why some songs can trigger memories of another time and place or even someone's face you had all but forgotten.
.
I'm English and I'm amazed how artists who are giants in France are basically unknown to the majority of Brits. For example, stop a Brit in the street and ask them to name a French popular singer/band from the last century and they wouldn't get past Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Sacha Distel and Maurice Chevalier. However, I have an English friend who is probably the world authority on 1960s French popular music ( a period that I think was not very inspiring) One thing that I would say, is that I like my French popular music to sound French! ( BTW, most British pop music of the past 60 yrs has sounded American...accents and all ! )
We say in English, “Good fences make good neighbors”. Dans l’appartement à Angers, a good wall made two good neighbors.
Do you know of a band named St. Germain from France? They are the creation of Ludovic Navarre. They surfaced around 1993, and even managed to get some radio airplay around the year 2000 in the USA. I really like them. It is considered house/nu jazz as a genre.
Songs with very loose connections to French: May I suggest you give a listen to "Sadeness Part 1" by Enigma. It has a dance beat, spoken French, and chanting monks. I also recommend "Never Let Me Down" or "Enjoy The Silence" by the band Depeche Mode. They are from the UK (Royaume-Uni,) but their name is French. They say it roughly translates to "Fast Fashion." ~Be Blessed
My favorite recent Francophone performing artist is Stromae. He's absolutely brilliant, but has been inactive for the past couple years due to health issues. I do hope he comes back someday.
I heard he’s coming back!
yes... before there was a lot of beautiful music compared to now.
J'adore ton tee-shirt one piece
👒👒
I barely knew any of those songs, but I knew 1/2 the artists…
My favorite Francophone artist is Jorane 🇨🇦: I can’t find the Québec flag on my phone…
For a good belly laugh or two, it's hard to beat the "Ballade de Davy Crockett" by Annie Cordy (circa mid 50's). I read that it was at the top of the French music charts for quite a few weeks (those Frenchies know quality when they hear it)
“ My favorite Yi-Yi French singer was France Gall(RIP).”
You make remarks like you probably know this one and similar Je regret but I live in England and although I’m not in touch with the modern music the fact is French music has very rarely had any impact in this country Off the top of my head and I’m showing my age I can mention people like Edith Piaf Sasha Distel Catharina Valenti Charles Aznavour Vanessa Paradis. Françoise Hardy jean-Michel Jarre. Milli Vanilli. As far as I know the only act that ever had a number one in England was Jane Birkin (from England) And Serge Gainsbourg With a song called Je t’aime moi non plus back in about 1967 which attained a certain notoriety because of the sexy orgasmic breathing which at that time was considered rather naughty. I think the BBC banned it and of course whenever they do that the song is guaranteed to go straight to number one. Added to that was it was a talking point what exactly the song was all about As far as I know nobody ever did work it out. I love me not more ? Maybe you can explain. In more recent times there has been a successful French singer calling herself Christine who had a successful album here. At least two of the songs you mentioned sounded to me remarkably like copies of English acts. Douliou douliou st tropez is a rip of the song Do you want to dance by Cliff Richard and the Shadows. See YT. And the band with the twangy guitars is a tribute to the Shadows who had many hits in the early 60s on their own account like Apache. Wonderful Land Foot tapper. Man of mystery and FBI. All on YT. It is very surprising that with our two countries being so close together there is not more musical crossover and I can’t explain it other than there is a reluctance by British people to care about songs in foreign languages although occasionally one will break through when it is perceived to be exotic and musically interesting. For instance Joe le taxi by Vanessa Paradis which was very successful here as what we call a one hit wonder. Ps In the late 50s and early 60s Cliff Richard was One of several claimants to the title the British Elvis. Sadly his management advised him that if he wished to make a career in music he would have to stop being a RocknRoller wear a bowtie and appeal to the mums and dads audience And they were right because he has been successful to this day With nearly 70 songs in the top 10 and has sold more singles and albums in uk than anybody except the Beatles and Elvis. And has a world wide fan club. I doubt if many people in France have even heard of him or the Shadows
How strange! I used to listen quite a lot to French radio in the 70s and 80s, but there are only a few songs you mention, that I know. Among my favorites from that time are Julien Clerc, Véronique Sanson, France Gall, Lio (Bananasplit, Sage comme une image), Plastic Bertrand (ça plane pour moi), Elli & Jacno. More recent artists include Joyce Jonathan and Coeur de Pirate.
It’s not because it’s French that it’s from France: Cœur de Pirate is Canadian 😉
@@franckthibault2521 and we don’t speak French in Canada? Pas du tout. Just kidding. I didn’t speak English until I started elementary school. Ooh, your name, Thibault, was the former name of the town of Richer, Manitoba. Before it was know as Richer, it was called Thibaultville. But I digress, I have lived in California for the past 51 years. In my youth, we listened to Adamo, Gilbert Bécaud, and by far one of the greatest voices ever, Mireille Mathieu. But there are plenty of those non-French singers like, Robert Charlesbois (whose accent would stump or amuse the French) Roch Voisine, Plume Latraverse, Maurice Paquin (home boy from Manitoba, yes there is a huge francophone population outside of Québec), Gilles Vigneault, Félix Leclerc, and many more in which I can attest are French, perhaps not from France, but French none the less. Thanks to streaming services, I have rediscovered many from then and I am discovering many new artists.
À bientôt.
@@georgesbrodeur9608 All I was saying is that French speaking singers/bands aren’t necessarily from France. I’m Québécois (Canadian) and I’m not a huge fan of Francophone music. Just like you I learned English in elementary school… My parents loved Julien Clerc, Felix Leclerc, Harmonium, Beau Dommage, etc, but that wasn’t really my style. I love Groovy Aardvark & Jorane.
Jorane’s Vent Fou is in my 5 album of all time. I also like Marie-Mai. I prefer rifts over the typical “chansonnier” French or Québécois type.
But thanks for the history lesson!
@@franckthibault2521 my sarcasm gets the better of me. Sorry it may have come across as a complaint. If your parents were listening to Harmonium and Beau Domage, then they are probably my age or generation too. I discovered them after high school thanks to a lovely girl who was from Trois Rivières. To me it was great to hear some current music that wasn’t available here in California. I will have to check out your favourites.
Lately I stream the very radio station that my memère listened to back in the 60s. CKSB, Ici Radio-Canada Première, Winnipeg Manitoba. I’ve gone full circle. In the afternoon it breaks from the national feed to local programming hosted by Jérémy Laniel, called L’actuel. Fun thing is hearing interviews with people I once knew or stories from places we used to frequent. Jérémy is Québécois but lives in Winnipeg. About every ten minutes he plays a song from various francophone artists. I am expanding my music library on my smart speaker thanks to him.
My dad’s father was from St Hyacinth, PQ., so my roots are Québécois. I’m the only one to stay here in the states. Had we stayed in Manitoba, the odds of me meeting a young French gal and finding out we were related were extremely high.
You missed one of the best - Blankass.
Is it true in France you must have a breathalyzer in your car while driving? Since 2012? Do a video on french laws that are strange to foreigners! Good work !!
I think it's pretty simple, in the early days people had to have actual talent to make it. If you could play or sing, there would be no radiostations that would play your music. Playbacking your song wasn't really possible in most cases. So singer had to perform live and so did musicians. They knew their craft, they had to. Without it they would just not make it. And artist really made sure to get their best songs out there. These days the emphasis is more towards the image of an artist. The music comes second. Just find a pretty boy or girl, dress them scarcely and make the sing something. Just auto tune the whole thing and of you go. With the right tune it will become a hit, but the quality of the song won't last. We live in a world where people want instant gratification, not quality. Most hits from today won't last, in a couple of years those songs will be forgotten. Music made by real talented people tends to last for generations. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Bee Gees, Dire Straights, Barbara Streisand and so on... their songs will live for many decades. Why? Because it's made with love, not for the sake of money. And the same goes for lyrics as well, songs about the human emotions tend to outlive the ones that revolve around pornographic lyrics. That's not to say you can't enjoy today's songs, you can. But chances are they won't last.
Red Sox - Yankees tonight, October 5 from Beantown. Are you ready to rumble?????
Hello French Fry...
France Gall -Laisse tomber les filles
We we Marie
Pleased you included songs from Indochine, but surprised there is nothing from Niagara or Les Rita Mitsouko.
Just listened to this one an hour ago!
@@FrenchTastic Did you like it? I have such fond memories of summer '96.in France/Dordogne fete. .
It’s a classic! I love it 😊
Still I have not seen you react to "Je Suis Malade" from one of Dimash's IDOLS , Lara Fabian !
Like Celine Dion, she lives in Quebec !
I listened to this one already, couldn’t do a proper reaction :)
@@FrenchTastic That's a good choice--it's hard to re-live the feelings Lara Fabian's version
of "Je Suis Malade" gives when first heard. But if you ever want to react to Lara, please
consider "You're Not From Here." It has a lyric that goes: "...and I fly..." She sings those words,
and uses her voice to portray the actual feeling of flying--amazing. The song begins:
"I don't know what is going on," and describes the realization she's found a new love :-)
Lara's live performances are hard to match--live version link-->: ruclips.net/video/hfgKfYbrRT0/видео.html

No Mike Brant or Claude Francois?
didn't know any of them....i'll bet there are many from the USA that you haven't heard ..... even though a lot of USA stars are international.....country music ?
Thank you for sharing some of your favourite music, Marie. Just for fun, you should give a listen to this song by Patrick Zabé. ruclips.net/video/9q26KhFD1I0/видео.html It was a hit here in Canada back in the 60s.
Where is Francoise Hardy?
What about "LARA FABIAN"???...!!!
I came looking for a girly song I used to listen to in the 90's, something in the lyrics said Je m'appelle Lulu...help
Nevermind.
It was Je m'appelle Lolita by Alizee
Wouldn't be the 19th century
