    I live in Montana, hardiness zone 5a.
    I bring my mandeville vine in before frost and keep it in an insulated garden room shed until June. I keep the temperature about 65° with a wall heater, but on sunny days it can be warmer. It lives in front of a west facing window, which gives it plenty of light. In late fall I have to put a shade screen on that window, as late afternoon sun at that time of year can be pretty intense. It doesn’t drop very many leaves, and sits there with new growing tips that well, just sit there. Doesn’t grow and doesn’t die. I barely water it, but mist it more than anything. A couple years ago it really struggled….pot was too big, and too much water….but it made it through. Took a whole summer to recover, though. I have found the biggest setback is putting them out too early, or bringing them in too late…..that’s when you’ll get leaf drop. They really hate cold and wet, cold most of all. They love the warmth. Don’t give up if you kill one off, just note what you did wrong, and try again. They make beautiful woody trunks, like a grape vine, and can live a long time.

    Thank you for your video. I have 3 that I call my hitch hikers (cuz I picked them up this spring on the side of the road when I was doing a 34 in South Carolina). They were in a ditch half dead. They recovered beautifully and would love to put them back out next year.

    I just bought a deep red dipladenia on clearance. Leaves at the bottom have dropped fallen off, but at the top they are green and still producing buds. I'm in zone 8 any suggestions on keeping her happy. I currently have her next to my tree in the front yard 50/50 shade and sun. I'm thinking of bringing her in as temps drop here. I also have 3 Corton's, any suggestions on them in winter??

    It looks like you’re cutting down by 2/3s and leaving 1/3. I have a dipladenia I want to try and over winter so please let me know if I’m understanding how far to cut back. Thanks

      Ok. I found the answer to this question in a remark you made to someone else. Sorry to hear she didn’t survive.
      Thanks. Sorry to bother you but I just found your videos. I prescribed cuz you have many videos on all different plants. However! Since you have so many, I can’t find the follow up on how the plant in this video did over winter. Did it survive and thrive after you put it out the next spring? Thanks.

      @@twinfin8571 you're not bothering me at all .
      No she didn't make it. I couldn't get her enough high light over the winter and I think I over watered her also.
      But it never hurts to try. In the past it's been successful. Hope yours does well for you

      @@tropicalplantmomma . I’ll let you know! I just cut off all her flowers and buds with the 2/3rds cut back. She was gorgeous. She’s staying out in the patio that isn’t heated. It’s only protected from wind, rain and frost. But it gets cold. I’m covering her with a winter material people use outdoors on their bushes in severe cold. That’s it. I won’t cover her till it gets in the high 30’s or when all her leaves have fallen. I want her to be totally dormant. I’m also doing your method on some elephant ears. I left a few plants in the ground which I will cover with oak leaves. Some guy says he does this every year in zone 7 which I’m in, and I have a ton of leaves. So! In for some exciting experiments.
      I’m going to be binge watching your videos on house plants etc since I am an over carer and usually kill my plants with love. I’m doing much better lately though…..only killed one so far this year! It was one of my birds nests…..the one I didn’t repot so I think the soil stayed too wet cuz the other I repotted in lose soil and it is doing very well. Thanks for all your videos!

    I just received my, "Dipladenia Red Fury Mandevilla sp. Red Fury 4" Pot," that I had ordered from The Flower Pot Nursery to be an indoor plant for my condo. I live in East Tennessee, and we have all 4 seasons, here. I will keep it inside by a window and train it to grow up a wood & metal scroll wall plaque. I fear that it may not necessarily thrive but will be, "okay," inside all year long. I read that it will need a 12" to 14" pot and get 6 or more hours of direct sunlight. I'm a romantic and bought it based on the bloom and that it's a rather narrow leave vine while assuming it was a smaller vine plant. Now, my realistic side has the challenge given my romantic side to give this plant the best conditions in my condo for at least being healthy and blooming, some. I have videos on my channel of the living room window in which I'll place it by, the same window that I did a plant hanging project with. If a date or female friend visits, I'm worried that this plant may look silly and too much for a condo. Do I have a good plan if I train it to grow the 3' or so of my wall plaque then trim the leading growths so as to stop the travel up and encourage it to fill out? Many thanks for the advice and am a new fan of your channel.

      Well maybe you can use a growling if you find , especially in winter there isn't enough light to make it grow and bloom. Good luck it sounds like a great idea.

    How can I tell if my plant is dormant? I have two one is a big leaf with vines the other like yours. I live in Ct. So I brought them indoors. I have an issue with the big leaf. Leaves drying on edges and they drop. Soils not dry. I figured fungal so I sprayed it but I'm worried. I don't want it to die. The other like yours is great only dropped maybe 4 to 6 in two weeks. I read they prefer a dryer soil vs wet or moist. Could you please ink your thoughts? You seem to have them pretty figured out. Thanks for your tine. Have an awesome day.

      Hello.. thats just what they do when they go dormant.. drop leaves. You want to let them dry down about half way and keep them in a more shady location in the house.. like its winter.. and in a cooler room.. or even a basement.. I've had some that will come back in spring and some that dont.. for me it's been kinda hit and miss with these plants. I've never had any luck growing them in the house and the leaves stay nice. I hope this helps and good luck

    • @tropicalplantmomma
      @tropicalplantmomma  4 года назад

      Hi. As far as I know Hybiscus are a hardy plant, at least in my zone which is zone 5. All I do is Let mine die all the way back as normal and then cut it down about 6 inches from the ground, that way you know where its at the following year. Or you can let it go all winter and cut it down in the spring, that's the way I usually go with that plant because.... I always run out of time in fall... Lol. Also mulching is optional I never mulch mine and it always comes back, very hardy plants.. I hope that was some help to you. If we get another nice day where I can be outside without freezing my but off.. Lol I'll do a video for sure!✌💖

      I think she's talking about the tropical hibiscus Suzette. And I have overwinter those tropical hibiscus just by bringing them in the house the last minute before Frost so that if there's any insects on the plant like spider mites they don't come in with it so I always leave mine out till the last minute. The cold won't kill them but a frost and freeze will. Then let it Bloom cuz it'll probably still have some buds on it and then cut it back after the blooms are gone. Don't let it get soaked and wet but don't let it dry out too much or it will get spider mite. Some of my tropical hibiscus I had for 3 or 4 years but some things happened in my life and I couldn't overwinter everything
