It might also help to think of 'pendant' as 'during' instead of 'for'. For example, 'I played basketball during (some) 3 years in the past'. It's not the best English, but it does help me personally, since 'for' is typically 'pour'

How about il y a 3 ans? When do you use this?

"Il y a 3 ans" would translate as "3 years ago" in English. Hope this helps 😊
