    Hi,. Chuck! Very very good. Thanks for your videos. Could I ask you for some advice on how to sing falsetto notes? For example the unchain melody song at the highest point where it touches MI5. How to emit the sound? By opening your mouth vertically? Horizontal? Do you have any exercises on this, for the transition from mix to falsetto?

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  4 года назад

      Hi Giuseppe: It's not really a technique trick. You must transition from mix voice in the bridge to head voice. There's no reason to flip into falsetto...you can do it in head voice. But if you try and pull the chest voice too high....it only strains. Definitely keep your mouth vertical and try using "oo" (as in you) lips and drop your jaw (two+ fingers open) and stay hooty with plenty of air passing through the vocal cords.

      Practice will help for sure. It wasn't always like this. Try and relax as much as possible. Also, move your fingers lower...just below your lips and then lift up your cheeks. This will help the lips stay floppy and relaxed. Finally, only blow enough air to get the lips started.
      You can do it!

    Hello Chuck! I am able to sing high notes this way, but I was wondering how to do the same with low notes?
    I can't seem to get louder without everything squeezing, my neck hurts so much I just can't continue :/ I don't feel that kind of tension when I'm using your bubble lip exercises; but it comes right back when I'm singing, or humming or using any other exercise. (idk if it's relevant but the notes where this happens are in the lowest part of my range, C3~E3)
    Thanks for reading my message.

      @PowerToSing  4 года назад +2

      Hi Rainie: The quality of the low notes are impacted more by the quality of your high notes that anything else. If the high notes are done with a high larynx...the low notes fade out and are fuzzy. Keep working on you mix and head voice with good technique and the low notes will improve. www.powertosing.com/?s=low+notes

    When in the oh, should one be in full head voice or stay in mix/first bridge voice? It sounds like the oo is in a mixed voice or first bridge production, but then the oh goes into full head voice - which of course makes the power easier to deliver. But if i really concentrate I can keep the oh in the same production as the bubble-to-oo - which I think of as a mixed or first bridge production (maybe that's not the right term). The thing about that is that it's a *lot* harder to increase the volume on that than to increase it on the full head voice / 2nd bridge type production. But perhaps the idea of the exercise is that by repeatedly doing in in the 1st bridge / mixed voice type production, eventually one can build as much power there as in the full head voice? Is that it? If so, is that something one should expect to make material progress on in months, or is that the 15 year journey you mentioned?

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  4 года назад

      "But perhaps the idea of the exercise is that by repeatedly doing in in the 1st bridge / mixed voice type production, eventually one can build as much power there as in the full head voice? Is that it?" Exactly right! And you are right.... amazingly the power will grow! You have the advantage of making this journey in terms of months!

    • @andrewlilico2218
      @andrewlilico2218 4 года назад +1

      @@PowerToSing This seems to be much the hardest of all the exercises you've done videos on (& I've done a lot of them). It's step 2 here that I can't seem to do. If I let the voice go out of mix and into head, then steps 3 and 4 are straightforward. I also seem to be able to do it (at least badly enough to build on with practice) if I do the whole entry run in (mix) oo instead of in bubble (ie I can transition from the oo to oh in that case whilst staying in mix). But I find it extremely difficult to keep the oh where the oo was (which is where the bubble was) in Step 2 if I enter with the bubble. The oo, post-bubble, is just in such a small, tight place that I don't seem to be able to move the tongue or lips to shift to the oh without falling out of the resonance place into head unless I really really concentrate, in which case I can get into a sort of very strangled hard-sounding oh which is essentially a forced version of the oo but with the lips opened marginally. It feels like once I'm in the oo post-bubble I'm locked in place and the only other vowel I can transition to with the same resonance is ee. I presume that means I must be doing something wrong in Step 1 - i.e. my oo must be wrong as soon as I go into it. Do you have any suggestions for how to prevent the initial oo in Step 1 ending up in too small, too locked a place - so small and locked that we can't get into oh in Step 2?

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  4 года назад

      @@andrewlilico2218 Put it in a different context. Don't worry about the loudness or softness. Focus on keeping the second vowel where the first vowel established it. Practice it this way New new new new new new no no no no no no no. (Octave Repeat Scale) Or do it no to nook (leave off the "k") . It takes a while to get the feel. Medium volume. See what happens. Try it also using goo to go.

    Do you have any videos about low notes? I have an excellent voice teacher who also performs on Broadway. She has already expanded my range upward by a major third. And it's not falsetto!
    But, my lower range is problematic. The full enchilada is F2 - E4 and now upto G4.
    I definitely have those lower notes. But, the F2 - G2 can be very raspy or breathy. I am 68. Due to disability and meds I have not sung even in the shower for more than three decades. My meds are changed and my voice is coming back. Believe it or not, for a guy who was heavy in the Folk Circuit in the late '60s, I have forgotten how to sing!
    I have "discovered" Dutch Pop-Rock music. Much of it is in English, but nevertheless I am learning to, speak Dutch for the few Dutch language songs I like.
    The one snag, I hear the music in my head, but when I attempt to sing it without the original singer in some cases nothing remotely like the original melody comes out!
    Fortunately, my teacher has experience working with people like me. We are making great headway with intonation and ear training. I actually don't mind just doing vocal exercises for the last three months. When I sing a few bars by myself, without any accompaniment, it actually sounds like the melody!
    Liz has told me as I learn to get more chesty in my low notes, with more work down there, I will begin to open up more and get more solid in my sound.
    So, I am asking for a second opinion if that's ethical. Am I just being impatient with myself? Or are there some things on which to focus?
    Ironically, from junior high on to college I always sang Second Tenor, but according to my range and your exercise I am a kind of Baritone. But I exclusively sing from my head, I even feel it in my teeth and face. I always thought that only Tenors were that much in the head.
    Pardon me for hijacking your high notes lesson. But, I honestly couldn't find anything on singing low notes.
    Again, apologies for asking for a second opinion that's off topic.

    Thank you sir, but i have heard messa di voce is not only going up high notes in scale from soft to loud then soft , but it's picking up any single note in a scale and then practice on that particular note by increasing volume and decreasing it without affecting air pressure. So this is my doubt sir, I'll be happy if you can clear it.

    • @PowerToSing
      @PowerToSing  4 года назад +1

      I recommend researching it on Google. Here's another excerpt from Wikipedia. The messa di voce is universally considered a very advanced vocal technique. To be properly executed, the only feature of the note being sung that should change is the volume - not the pitch, intonation, timbre, vibrato, and so on. This requires an extremely high level of vocal coordination, particularly in the diminuendo, so the technique is not often explicitly called for and is rarely heard outside classical music.

      There are many opera singers who have very loud high notes using speech level technique. Pavarotti did not study this technique, but he said in an interview he spent 10 years building a quality F4. I'm convinced, that even world class singers spend years developing impressive high notes.

    There is a danger here though of ladies ending up in falsetto and not connected if they don’t keep that counter weight and body connection through the diminuendo.
    If we focus on sending more or less air we effect the function of the fold closure.
    A focus on controlling the resonance and the breath stream resistance is required to ensure we are actually controlling dynamic and not just making a sound appear darker or lighter (hope that makes sense!).
    Diminuendo is always a struggle for women as there isn’t so much of a timbre change in female falsetto so we can be thinking it sounds correct when it isn’t. ESP via the internet! 🤣
