  • This is the 1978 Patton fan that I got not too long ago off eBay. The motor started shorting out while it was running one night, so I figured I'd take it outside and finish it off. I'm going to keep the fan, and get a new motor for it. Please don't try this yourself, and especially don't do it indoors.

      Yeah, I hope you have better luck with yours. Just make sure to listen for any strange sounds, and try not to leave it unattended while you run it. Mine would make a weird buzzing sound until the motor got warmed up, and it got worse right before it burned up. I am going to buy a new motor for it eventually, but automotive repairs/expenses are keeping that from happening right now.

    • @carson01XJ
      @carson01XJ  7 лет назад

      This motor was oiled well, so that had no effect on the winding failure or how hot the motor got. The insulation on the windings just deteriorates over time, and leads to a short circuit. These shaded pole motors normally run quite hot anyway.

  • @dragonrider4253
    @dragonrider4253 3 года назад +4

    Seems like the windings for low and medium were shorted to high. they were fighting each other. when the fault blew clear, it sped up, there was less magnetic resistance. Not sure why high went after. Either your switch or the motor itself had a defect.

    it seems like the thermal fuseshould have gone off before it was glowing red and in flames

    • @carson01XJ
      @carson01XJ  7 лет назад +5

      It really should have, but I guess it's not all that effective for isolated failures/shorts that only cause part of the winding to overheat. I think the thermal fuse is designed more for cutting power to an overworked or seized motor, because in that case the entire thing would be overheating. Either that, or the thermal fuse in these motors just isn't very effective.

    • @enderpea5251
      @enderpea5251 4 года назад +3

      The thermal fuses in fans in the 80s probably weren't as good as the fans in now days.

    • @dickcheney6
      @dickcheney6 2 года назад +1

      My best guess is that they only tested it to prevent a fire from starting, if the fan blades were stalled due to dust, foreign items or bad ball bearings. With that said, I have a fan that has a "current fuse" in the plug itself, so that would have blown if the current draw had skyrocketed like yours did.
      Sometimes there is a self-resetting thermal switch on motors that are more expensive, or where quick recovery is required. These usually trip at a lower temperature, but they still have a one-shot thermal fuse if the resetting thermal switch ever fails for some reason.

    last month i picked up a 1989 Patton U21887 it came from a local supermarket that closed. The motor is totally worn out as i had to bridge the thermal fuse to get it to go as this has a Samsung motor. the bearings are worn out the shaft is scored so this fan was heavilly used used for drying floors, cooling, cooling compressors to maintain head pressures, and blowing air through condensers in units with inoperable fans. the only motors i can find for this its a PSC type motor as i have to use a 48 frame motor as they bolt up to the Samsung mounts. as the 3 is from Marathon, Century (A.O. Smith) and US Motors (Emerson Electric Co.) as most likely i be getting the US Motors 1690 3 speed reversable 2.7 amp and 10 MFD cap. which i can reuse my existing cap as it checks out good. the smaller Patton fans used FASCO motors. the larger fans used Samsung motors then later in the 1990s is the McMillian Electric motor. which im having trouble obtaining a McMillian motor. the 48 frame motor mounts to the rear grille but it will stick out more.

    the new FASCO motors are assembled in Mexico as they are now owned by Regal-Beloit which owns Century (formally A.o.Smith, Magnetek, and Universal Electric company) the fasco motor i can find in that range is a D128 3 speed cw rotation Shaded Pole type motor the low efficiency type the motor i recommend thats FASCO is a Permanent Split Capacitor thats 3 speed is D1144 as i think that motor will include a run capacitor . for Century motors its stock for 3.3 inch motors are being transferred to the FASCO line as most of the 3.3 motors are now obselete. if u get a single speed motor i would also get a KB electronics vari speed variable speed triac motor control switch. which is compatable with Shaded Pole and PSC motors if u want to go to the ECM electronically communtated DC brushless motor for energy savings i would get

    my Vintage Vornado B38 C-1 suffered a nasty motor burnout like yours the windings shorted out and tripped the breaker the original motor is junk now as now i have to get a motor and varible speed triac switch for it. the motor is a Shaded Pole 4.4 inch. as i can't find them to fit the original mount i need to adapt a 3.3 inch motor to it possibly FASCO for a steeply pitched blade i will need to get a PSC permanent split capacitor motor. the motor i found is a US Motors 9664 for it its universal but i need to get a 3.3 inch belly band mount and make a 4th leg so it fits into the fan as well as a 4.4 to 3.3 in adapter plate so i can remount the original switch housing to it and it may hide the run cap for the motor. the fan dates to 1956. i believe the motor is either Redmond or Universal Electric. so it be FASCO or US motors i could go with a 3 speed FASCO D1144 for it the motor originally draws 2.40 amps the PSC motor it be 1amp or less. as they are more efficient than shaded pole motors. and is thermally protected. what it will say on the box it be auto thermal protection as it will reset when the motor cools down.

    • @carson01XJ

      I think the same thing would have happened to your motor if you kept it running, if the thermal fuse didn't trip before then (or the windings didn't just go open circuit). Usually this kind of failure is caused by shorted windings. The varnish insulation on the windings deteriorates over time from getting hot and cold over and over again. I've bought quite a few vintage fans on eBay, and this is the only one that has failed on me. Still, you should always take precautions with these old fans. Give them plenty of supervised test runs, and look into getting a Kill A Watt meter so you can see what the amp draw is. They may be better built then the new fans, but they are not as safe electrically. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

    Just don’t mess up your blade. But I was thinking about maybe getting -/and or one rather if it’s ok with my dad, and I’m 20, but I was wondering are those motors cheap or was it just that particular 1/one

    • @carson01XJ
      @carson01XJ  4 года назад

      I don't think they were necessarily cheap motors, but these small ones certainly weren't as good as larger motors. These types of motors naturally get really hot. The insulation in this one failed due to years of running extremely hot and then cooling down over and over again. If you do get one, just keep an eye on it and make sure it isn't making any strange sounds. These are all quite old at this point, and they are going to have lots of hours on them.

    So, how do you get replacement motors for fans, anyway?

    • @carson01XJ
      @carson01XJ  7 лет назад +2

      It depends on the fan. This fan has a motor that was used in many different applications, so it's easy to find.

    • @THEtechknight
      @THEtechknight 7 лет назад

      Well, mine is an Emerson 1930s/1940s wooden box fan, paddle blades. It has one of those autotransformer style speed adjustments, and its motor is on the way out. It still works, but the bearings are done, thrust washers are done, and the oil wick is done. The windings appear to be ok, but who knows for how long.

    • @sethhorst6158

      Fiasco and fasco is two different words.

    • @vincentrobinette1507
      @vincentrobinette1507 5 лет назад

      @@sethhorst6158 It's an intended play on words. My boiler uses a draft motor, which is made by Fasco. The rotor shaft is too small, to fit a 608 bearing. the shaft fits loosely. so, there isn't enough clearance to use a shim, too much clearance, to use something like Loctite. I ended up using a 2 part epoxy and put the rotor in an armature lathe, to try to center the shaft in the new 608Z bearings. It's working with limited success, but I was never able to balance it the way i want, so I'm just letting it vibrate, until I just replace the whole draft fan. They cost 10 X what they're worth. I literally used a fine felt tip pen, to write an "I" between the "F" and the "A". Because they didn't machine the shaft to the diameter of a standard replacement bearing, is why I now refer to the company as "Fiasco".( The outer races fit perfectly in the end bells of the motor)

I couldn't believe what I saw, I didn't know that an amateur could actually be rewinded like that , I still have the original amateur that went to my wizard box fan , did you think that it's possible that my Westinghouse motor could be rewinded the same way? Let me know if you still have the original motor to your patton fan , and look up and watch this video that I'm talking about , type in vintage fan restoration on RUclips and it should be right there in front of you , message me back and tell me what you think, God bless you my friend 👍🙂.
