Johnny One... I also think people feel dumb if they ask how to read one, like people are born with the knowledge of everything. I know I felt stupid asking someone and I have seen a lot of tradesmen kinda guess now and then while reading a tape. Also doing the math of adding or subtracting measurements. I won't lie, I buy a metric tape for easy use of millimeters. 20 plus 7 is 27, While 3/4 plus 5/16ths isn't as easy to quickly add. Lol..
I worked with sheetrock for a while but a decided to leave because I had problems with the tape.I bought one with numbers written down and now I work in a steel workshop and measuring is needed.With the tape and the video it helps a lot.Awesome video.
Thank you so much for posting this upload. I’m from Scotland and was brought up on the metric system. Never used imperial and kind of never needed to either. Getting into woodworking and imperial is everywhere, so wanted to understand it. You’re description and simple explanation was just superb. Very very easy to understand when someone like yourself explains the system as clearly as you did. Thanks again.
I needed this refreshers course on reading the various tape measures, sometime we forget and I've told my stepson to utilize RUclips for help when you may not know something. I appreciate your time and effort to reeducation.
Wow. My brother likes me to help him out on projects and I always get stuck when it comes to measuring. I think I kinda got it. Thanks 😊 a lot. Being a girl, we must learn a lit’l of everything. Thanks.
Thanks for the time you have taken with this. I'm Canadian, so I grew up using metric until my late teens when I started seeing the SI form used in the trades more. It took awhile to get used to for sure. And I still stumble from time to time
Do worry, man, I still stumble every now and again. I do love the metric system, but unfortunately, I don't see it taking over the US anytime soon. Everything based 10, what could be easier? Thanks for watching!
Being from the UK, I was never shown the Imperial system, so now I’ve become a woodworker, it’s nice to try and learn this… and now I know. Thanks a lot. Oh, and 1 million other people thank you too 👍
Hey thanks I'm in grade 11 construction class, when I would of been in grade 12 con if I took it the year before but I didn't. Although I had troubles integrating into the new environment I really liked the atmosphere that the con room gave me. The only bad part was the measurements. I didn't understand them for I am Canadian and this is the only place I've saw us use inches to measure things. So this video really helped me out! Thanks man:D
Your the Best omg you just helped a 37 year old business owner I felt stupid so I never said no I don’t understand. I just acted this showed me everything .
Well for those of use who couldnt read a tape measure. I had a hard time paying attention in school, i went to a bad school where other kids couldnt learn and pay attention because there were always other kids who wanted to be a distraction to others in the classroom and act like clowns and it robbed be of alot through my younger school years. Sadly yes im 26 and didnt know how to read a tape measure till now, i coudl tell what a half inch and an inch was but as far as 16tha and 8ths nope lol. But I really appreciate you posting this and now i know it sounds easy. I feel I could really apply this teaching that i was robbed of a long time ago.
Now, just do a RUclips search on how to learn correct English grammar, and you'll be all set to master the world. I'm sure there were people in your class who suffered the BS of their classmates and made it through to the other side without having to blame others for their adequateness. I know I did.
man you are right!!!! i don't know how to count the tapes... i was laughing when you said there are some guys out there that dont know how to count tapes... well im one of them!!
First of all, thank you for your service! God bless you! Absolutely loved this tutorial! Very well explained. I don’t do wood work, but I’m a self taught crocheter and sewer and there’s a lot of measuring involved. I have never been good at math nd fraction, well say the least! Lol!!!! This has truly helped me to understand a tape measure so much better and see it with new eyes! I’m so happy!
I think that the one reason why many don't understand fractions is because they use pie charts in the schools to teach fractions. The problem with pie charts is that they don't represent real life examples such as the tape measure or the measuring cup that is used in cooking. The way the measurement breakdown was explained makes it easy to understand and makes the units clearer to see. Thank you for making and posting this video.
Dang you made this so much easier then a co worker yelling at me calling me dumb because I didn’t know How to read a tape measure it was never my thing I was into mechanic work before I got into the construction business I sit down everyday and pull out a random line and try to remember
This was so helpful! I just got a job selling customs frames and I needed a refresher on measuring tapes. Except for the odd project here and there, I haven't been around them much.
Amaryllis Torres u work at Michaels? cuz I do and just got trained in our frame shop. haven't looked at a tap measure in years. lol..sad I know. just need a refresher on this as well.
I had nephew working with me some years ago. He couldn't read a tape. After struggling with measurement translation all morning and trying to explain it to him I finally said to him: Ok so you don't sell 2 eighths, you sell quarter bag. And you don't sell 6 eighths, you sell 3/4 of an ounce. It hit him like a bolt of lightning and he never had a problem again.....lol..
Thank you for taking your time and upload such a great knowledge, i was ashamed, I really never had anyone to teach me this, but now i'm not ashamed anymore!!! Thanks a lot.
Starting a new career tomorrow as an Hvac tech. And I don’t know a damn thing about tools Or a tape measure lol. But I want to learn and and this video helped out a lot. Thanks
indeed i learned a lot from this video cuz i am from Afghaistan and we use a metric there but whenever i came to usa and become welder so its so difficult to me that how to use tape measure but thanks you so much from your video .its help a lots and hope keep it and describe it more to us
I thank you so much I really need a refresher on math it's been years since I bothered with it it's always annoyed and confused me ... I think that's why I stepped away but it's nice to learn proper *liked and subbed*
If you're knowledgeable in an any trade pass the torch down. Teach, and if you can teach for free. We need more tradesman. Thanks for the video man. I have a fractional craftsman cause I'm lazy to a fault but need to be prepared to use a non fractional tape measure one day.
Hey thanks so much I really appreciate yr video, cause iam one of those guys that was proud enough to ask for help so I get it now you should be a Teacher
Good work, it always nice to see people taking the time teach others. I would just like to point out that you shouldn't let your tape measure slam home, as this knocks the calibration off and you won't get precise measurements. Cheers and keep up the good work!
Incredible Work Sir...I must Thank You,,Because of you I am Able to understand this Tape measuring processing...God Bless You Sir...Keep Up the Good Work ,,,,Once Again Thank You Very Much,,,,,
im from the philippines and we normally use the metric system except in woodwork. im kinda embarassed that i always have a hard time reading fractions and inches. this is a great video to help me understand it more.
Wow, ur a great teacher... My brain is compromised due to chronic ailments n meds. I aim to keep this video! Thank u! I've always had math issues. Now I can attempt making cards with correct measurements. 😊
Great video Get used to decimal equivalents of fractions . 1/8 = .125 1 divided by 8 = .125 7/8th is 7 divided by 8 = .875 Divide the numerator by the denominator in a fraction . I'm studying architecture and no one has ever explained to me how to use a tape measure. This is such a well done video! Keep up the great work Chris.
Thanks! Happy to help!
The whole reason people don't know how to read a tape measure is because people don't show them how. Simple as that dude. Thanks for your video.
Exactly!

Numbers are not for me I'm a very smart person but in numbers not, not only numbers make a person smart because I learn fast.
Now I need to know these simples steps and make my life easier 😂😅
There are two types of countries. Those that use the metric system and those that have put a man on the moon. And have consecutive world war wins.
Thank you thank you so much, I'm just a kid cause I'm helping my dad cutting wood and he is so proud of me thank u so much u just earned a like

Great video
Get used to decimal equivalents of fractions . 1/8 = .125
1 divided by 8 = .125
7/8th is 7 divided by 8 = .875 Divide the numerator by the denominator in a fraction . The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction . 4 is the denominator of 3/4 . 3 divided by 4 = .750
I have a board 12 inches and 1/8 inches long and have a board 9 inches and 3/4 long .
12 inches + (the fraction) 1 divided by 8 = 12.125 My other board is 9 inches and 3/4 long = 9 inches + 3/4 (3 divided by 4) = 9.750
The length of both boards added together is -> 12.125 + 9.750 = 21.875
21.875 = 21 7/8
7 divided by 8 = . 875
1/16 of an inch is -> 1 divided by 16 = .0625
13/16 of an inch is -> 13 divided by 16 = .812
SAR TRACKING Dude this is a terrific explanation. Can’t thank you enough for taking your time to type this out. 100% grateful. Thank you.
Or you can just measure the thing with metric . 210 cm - 2.1 meters ; 110cm- 1.1 meters ; 10 mm - 1cm - 0.1dm - 0.01meters
Thank you for teaching us
Just had a light bulb moment, thank you sir
This hear just got me raise lol
Best explanation!
Thanks dude
