The folks who order the contents choose gender neutral colours in winter they get a big fluffy allin one with ears for being out in the cold they look, like teddy bears its so cute. I'm not a parent, nor am I ever likely to be. However, I fully support the baby box. It's worth noting that whilst the guy in the video said it's free, and it is at the time parents will receive it, we all contribute to the scheme through our taxes. As a non-parent, I have no objections whatsoever that some of my tax will go to support giving every child a basic start in life as well as taking a little bit of the stress out the first few days / weeks of parenthood, especially for first time parents. To me, this is a perfect example of what a society can and should do to look out for one another. As others have said in their comments, I'm really proud that my country takes the initiative with scheme such as this.

    • @shelleyphilcox4743
      @shelleyphilcox4743 Год назад +8

@abigail1st No, Scotland gets the second highest spend per capita in the entire UK...only Northern Ireland gets more per head. The East Midlands in England gets the least spend per head, and the only region in England that has recently got a little more than Wales was London and that was because of the massive impact of lockdown on TFL. The average spend per capita in Scotland is 17% higher than the average spend per capita in England. In NI it's 18% and Wales 13% higher.
Scotland in 21/22 got £13881 per head. London, the highest in England got £13719. The lowest was East Midlands at just £10528, with the South East at £10665 and East England getting £10788 and South West gwtting £10820.
Looking to the Midlands, West Midlands gets £11550, Yorks and Humber £11131. North of East gets £12027. North West gets £12102.
      Wales £13401
      Scotland £13881
      Northern Ireland £14062
So, people in the southern and east midlands of England are a little bit fed up of hearing how Scotland is short changed in any way at all when it comes to budgets and per capita spend.
As far as the baby box is concerned, the policy is terrible because it gives people a box whether they are a millionaire or in terrible financial difficulty...it would be better if therr was more support for those in genuine need!

    • @shelleyphilcox4743
      @shelleyphilcox4743 Год назад +5

@@desj2584 In all honesty that is nonsense. There are many things for Scotland to be very proud of in terms of ingenuity, and historically education, but trying to claim Scotland and Wales are the majority of wealth contributors is a bit of a stretch too far. Scotland was bailed out of bankruptcy by England and Wales after its blighted Darien colonial scheme in Panama. After that, Scotland leveraged the commercial opportunities that came out of the colonial projects of James VI and the rest of the Stewart dynasty using the English and Welsh during their extremely tumultuous and tyrannical reign. Scotland did do very well out of that, having a disproportionate influence in slavery and sugar and tobacco plantations in the Caribbean, and joining the East India Company to spread influence around the globe...after all, it was Jardine and Matthieson who agitated Parliament for the Opium War to recover their confiscated drugs. Scotland was responsible for 20% of slave traders registered in London, and a Scot received the single largest compensation payment, and per capita, Scotland got the largest proportion of slave compensation and owned 33% of the plantations in Jamaica. Yet, Scotland was then, and still is now, 10% of the population. Scotland did and still does just fine in union. Since oil was discovered in the 70s, Scotland has had to share a bit more, and I realise that some think what's other peoples was also theirs and what's their own is well...just for them, now they are doing better. It's not an attractive look though!
That said, it's absolutely true that Scotland is beautiful, does have energy and water abundantly, and fisheries and could do just fine independently if it manages its finances competently...but that's also a challenge, especially with the current government, which is, politely, a very dodgy mess.

To “reiterate” - the baby box is free.
However, you don’t pay any medical fees (nor even prescriptions) when having a baby. The same thing goes for checkups before and after birth.
Whilst, you also get certain support from the Scottish Government. Every family in Scotland, for every single child under the age of 16, gets £25 (~$30) per week (again, per child; so if you’re a family of 3 kids, you get £75 every week). You also get free childcare for all 3/4 year olds AND free school lunches for Primary School Pupils (for the first 5 years, but about to be for ALL primary (elementary) school pupils).
There’s also additional welfare available called “Best Start”. These include:
    1. Early Learning Grant - a one off £250 Grant when a child is between 2 and 3 & 1/2 (if the family is poorer or the child disabled)
    2. School Age Grant - a one off £250 for poorer families when a child starts primary school (elementary)
    3. Best Start Food Card - a prepaid card for poorer families to buy healthier foods (which may be more expensive) from pregnancy until the child is 3 years old
    4. Pregnancy & Baby Payment - a single £600 payment from week 24 of a pregnancy up until a baby is 6 months old, for poorer or disabled families
    -
With an additional 2 benefits for exceptional circumstances:
Winter Payment Allowance - an (annual) payment of £200 to help families with a disabled child heat their homes during winter
Young Carers Grant - an annual £300 for young carers (children or young Scots who are often unpaid carers for disabled parents or relatives) to help improve quality of life, leisure, socialising or savings.
Furthermore, all under 22s get free bus travel, get 10% off groceries in most cooperative and/or Scottish-based shops, and tuition fees for college and university (they’re different things in Scotland, but they’re both tertiary education) are paid for by the government - meaning, working families don’t have to fork out nor live in debt to send their child to higher education.
Furthermore, they’re bringing in a new Allowance for foster parents to both encourage new fostering, and to support existing fostering.
Lastly (this isn’t even fully expansive, this just the surface, but I reckon this comment is already quite long), the Bairns Hoose (Scots language (not to be confused with Gaelic) for Kid’s House). A new flagship support system modelled after the Icelandic Barnahus - which provides a safe environment for child victims and survivors. This means in abusive situations, they have a safe home they can live; retelling traumatic events can often be more traumatising than the event itself, and so here, the child only needs to recount once in a safe calm place (also not having to live in their home, where the event may have taken place, helps reduce the “reliving” of the event).
The Scottish Government over the last couple of years, have really done us proud with the work they’ve done to support families and children, and helping lead the way internationally on human rights and tackling child poverty.
Makes me proud to be Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Im scottish and while we have alot of problems here this is one thing i will always be proud of. There are also grants which dont need to be paid back during maternity, between the age of 2 and 3 1/2 (for starting nursery/pre K), and another one between 5 and 6 for starting Primary 1 (elementary school). The local councils then give money each year to kids who are entitled to free school meals to purchase school uniform. These are mostly for those on benefits/welfare but what a relief for the families that need them. Our politics are a bit further left than the US, but I'm proud we try to take care of the most vulnerable in society, of course improvements can always be made though😊

As well as the box in Scotland there is a weekly payment of £25 ($31.79). For each child untill they reach the age of 16.
In the other UK countries its £24 ($30.52) for eldest child and £15.90 ($20.22) for each additional child per week.
0% VAT (Sales tax) on baby and children's clothes shoes etc. Normal rate is 20%.
2 weeks Paternity leave paid at £172.48 ($219.31) per week for the father. 52 weeks Maternity leave paid at 90% of weekly earnings for 6 weeks, then 33 weeks at £172.48 ($219.13) with the remaining 13 weeks unpaid. Maternity leave can be split between the mother and father. Mother decides how much time to take off. But it is illegal for her to return to work less than 2 weeks or 4 weeks if she works in a factory after giving birth. Can start from up to 11 weeks before due date.
Up to 30 hours a week free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds.being expanded over time. So that from 2025 All working parents with children from 9 months to 5 years will get 30 hours of free childcare a week.
Normal primary school starts age 5.

Germany doesn't do the baby-box, but puts similar help in other places (e.g. Arge, RedCross, Caritas etc.), often funded by the government or health insurance(*). In the hospitals (2 different, where I gave birth to my 4 children) there was always 1 nurse trained to make the needed connections. I never needed it myself, but know of other mothers that did.
Often times the OB-Gyn or the midwive(s) ask subtle questions on the state of mind/financial struggles during the pregnancy and in case help to get solutions.
My community on the other hand gave out "Welcome"-boxes. In it a onesie, a bib with the name of the baby, little socks, some diapers.
(*) They try to go the "in need" route, instead of an "everybody gets one" approach. I'm not sure which one is the better option 🤷‍♀️

In Scotland for family with law income you get a card that is roped up £40 a months till you baby turn 4 and you can use it only for formula or veggies , so you are able to get 4 boxes of formula a months which is more than enough and if you baby stops drinking milk you can get veggies. You also get free multivitamin till baby is 4 😉

When I got the first voucher and found out it had to go into a government trust fund that invests it in shares, I honestly didn’t expect him to get much back from it at all, maybe £150 or something. So was surprised when my niece got as much as she did x

Our daughter is almost 20 now and was born in Aberdeen. Way back then, when she was born the hospital gave us a 'baby bag' voucher all newborns had. You took the voucher to a 'participating pharmacy or store' - we went to Boots the chemist - and got a plastic bag about 18" square. I remember it contained a bottle of baby bath, a bottle of baby shampoo, a small trial-size sample bottle of talc, a teeny tub of nappy rash cream that would do about three or four times, a couple of newborn size nappies, a couple of breast pads, a couple of maternity pads, and a few vouchers for a little bit of money off nappies, baby food and baby milk powder. It may have contained a couple more things, it was nearly 20 years ago and relying on my memory, but if there was it would have been tiny trial size items that could be used a couple of times. Very useful but only for a few days. I'm glad to know there is that much help for new parents these days.

First time I saw a baby box was in Finland after the war. Finland was a country devastated by the 2nd world war and the were a lot of single mothers really struggling to make ends meet. The baby box was a genius way from the government of saying that every kid counted and they were all worth it. The boxes are still today delivered to every expecting family and I bet that if you should ask, nearly every Finn have spent their first year sleeping in the box.

The newborn payment is $641 and then there is a supplement for 13 weeks, maximum amount you can receive is $1,924.65. This is all tax free. The amount paid depends on your circumstances. Why such an odd amount I don't know.

The reason Scotland gets away with being so left-wing is that there's only 5.5 million people there and they're subsidised by the rest of the UK. If the 0opukation grew the cost would make a lot of their social programmes too expensive.
By 2030 the UK and especially Scotland has put a deadline on oil, their predominant asset and income. What on earth do they think they're going to finance all this with when they turn that income stream off? It's Venezuela all-over again...
Here in England we don't get half of the social programmes we subsidise in Scotland.
_Leading North East charity the Children's Foundation has launched England's first "baby boxes" inspired by those in Scandinavia and Scotland - along with a £1m appeal so they can give one to every new parent in the North East_ (this was back in March 2023)
When the population is small enough and demand isn't too high you can do it, but multiply the population by 10 and social programmes like this become too costly. It's why the NHS is suffering with immigration, as the population grows the demand on the national budget grows to the point it's not sustainable...

do propper research before commenting about subsidising scotland scotland pays more in tax than it gets back in its budget much like yorkshire does and the problem is it gets alot less than it pays in taxes . if you realised how much money is given away by westminster to privite interests and subsidising privitsed health companies you would realise your being robbed by the conservative government in the united kingdom the nhs trusts in england are forced to pay rent on buildings that were sold off by westminster nhs managers since 2012 and leaced back to them often to virgin healthcare or another private health group .
secondly scoland and the north of england pay more in taxes that the south of england the fact is yorkshire alone pays for about a 1/5th of the nhs total budget in its tax income and when money is wasted and handed to private interests like what tory peer michelle mone and her husband got from the coservative government that was ment to go to nhs supplies and it was funneled to an isle of man bank account to set up a payday loans company and expensive yachts and property.
thirdly the point i was ment to get at is alot of money is mispent in england by westminster and in scotland its fairly balanced and budgeted the nhs is classed as a priorty so is the wellfare of people thats not a left wing way of thinking its a human way of thinking if money wasnt misspent and the government in westminster is propping up private companies in rail, postal , water ,gas and electric companies there would be more than enough money for the people instead you have the westminster government propping up those private companies often with mps on the advisery boards that are paying out millions to shareholders and classing government subsidies as profits while not being maintained . dave its the government in westminster thats at fault and scotland is only thinking of its people something england should do when supporting yorkshire

Baby box is an expensive failed vanity project for the SNP. Chief mammy virtual signalling. Costs tax payers roughy £8.7m a year yet the infant mortality rate in Scotland is the highest it’s been for ten years. Middle class families given an expensive box of things they don’t really need. The money would be better spent targeting support to low income families and deprived areas.
A baby box won’t be much use to a homeless mother in the USA either. She needs a home not a box that her baby will fit in for a few months.

For information.......Scotland's infant mortality rate...2.8 per 1000 births is more than half that of USA and a quarter that of Englands. There was a small spike over a year ago although this was also seen elsewhere in the developd world . The possible reasons for this are still being analsed but I think , The Covid factor may be significant. I fail to see however, why this would be juxtaposed with the gift of baby essentials....seems a strange position. to take. I suppose it's just a political, tribal knee -jerk in an ever polarised, world. For most, however it's a very welcome , and much lauded initiative.

    • @Lovelee123
      @Lovelee123 Год назад +1

@@HelenMills-wh3vf this position is because when it was launched, Ms Sturgeon claimed it would “reduce infant mortality and improve child health”, whilst Angus Robertson, now a senior SNP cabinet minister, also claimed the baby boxes would “reduce infant mortality”. However a recent study by Glasgow University has shown there to have been no health improvement or reeducation in infant mortality at all. £90m spent on predominantly China made tat in six years. The money would have been better spent targeting the most vulnerable. Infant mortality is higher for ethnic minorities, the money could have provided them with increased care. Or used to support families in sever deprivation. Children of addicts are more vulnerable and yet mental health services and social work are under funded, with drug rehabilitation funding recently cut by £20m.
If they hadn’t made these absurd claims and we lived In an ideal world, with a functional health and social work system and properly funded mental health and social services I wouldn’t have an issue but I live in the real world, where society is unequal and funds need targeted where they will have the most effect.
