For those of you watching this getting ready to travel to Oahu, iolani palace, it costs $20 for a full tour and it is INCREDIBLE! Worth every dollar you will walk away feeling so much aloha spirit and appreciating the culture of Hawaii so much more
@@johanssonfilms 21:52 What's the spot that bans pictures? I don't like pictures (notice I cropped off my head in my avatar, that's not an accident) and the only thing I won't enjoy is so many people taking pics. (Although we can wear our masks indoors because of Covid) Thanks again for these great ways to save money!
So a few things I learned Is that the island has a whole #vanlife community. I wanted to add that if you rent a car you can also rent a camper van and have all what you need go with you from kitchen to wheels. It's perfect for people who like to get up and go. Or wish those rare sunsets and sun rises. Another tip a place I found to eat at is a Chinese restraunt called Number 1 It's an awesome place and they have the best breakfast bowls for only 3 bucks USD. Also 7/11 is amazing they have these machines that makes fresh smoothies and shakes. Love love love them. That's all I got so far. Great video and thanks so much for all the tips. :)
Wicked thank you for the incredible tips! We saw that there was a ton of vans for rent, but we figured it would be too pricey cause then you have to pay for the camp site on top of that too? Or did you manage to find free van camping?
Big surprises coming to Oahu for the first time coming from CA: -people riding motos w/o helmets -police vehicles that leave their blue lights on -strict covid passport checks in restaurants -people actually wearing masks -huge homelessness , third world country life outside of the fancy resorts -tourist traps (expect to pay admission for a bunch of stuff), expensive food, etc
The break down of categories is much appreciated!! I had to go back & reference things so many times for my trip and that just made things so much easier for me. Thank you
Thank you so much for this video. Planning vacations stress me out when I don't know what to expect, but this video has so much good information that I now feel calmer and more excited!
@@gettincreamiwiddit price went up a little. At Hawaiian Style Rentals, its $11.95 if you rent is 8 days or more. Apply coupon 'Essential' for an additional 30% off
Thanks for creating this video, I would suggest do hybrids of everything you mentioned. Camping you entire trip probably not your best experience, but maybe spend half Camping and half hotel to refresh. Bus and rental for traveling.
I wish you guys could put the location names on the video or in the description box since it's hard to understand some of the location names just by listening.
There was never a lot of hitch-hiking even when I was a kid but it does exist. As kids we used to hitch up and down Pupukea Homestead Road because the lower part of it really isn't walkable.
I'm so jealous right now😞 I lived in Kailua 3 yrs & you've seen more of island than I have! We had a great life there thou our house was a 2.5 million dollar house 576 Kaimalio Drive $1700 per month. Unreal panoramic windows throughout the part of house that faced Ocean. Was extremely loud with ocean WAVES lol 😆 lovely noise I miss dearly. Basically where we lived was so awesome we felt on vacation everyday, so we didn't feel need to "explore" (thou we did a little). I'm so happy you documented so well😊 THANK YOU
This video is amazing! I've visited Oahu many times since I was young my husband and I will be back in May and we're so excited! Looking forward to some of these new hikes, too!! Thanks again!!
We renewed wedding vows of 19 yrs. at Outrigger reef on the beach may 2012. You just have to spend the night for the beach ceremony free . Of course they had a photographer , we purchased pictures they are beautiful. We spent one night the other 8 days another hotel. The Royal Hawaiian Center have free hula shows there. We had breakfast at IHop got discount just show room key. There are Restaurants for breakfast one person eat free pick up magazines on street. Had subway, Arbys, Moose Mccuddys have specials on diffrent days . We had micro/fridge in room for dinner we purchased food at Sams & FoodLand. We did a grand circle island tour for $60.01 transportation included from 8am-5p.m. We were suppose to be in Hawaii this year Virus stopped that so we rescheduled for next year.
This is one of the most useful videos I've found so far! I am planning a trip for Winter 2023. Question: did you run into issues with parking?? I am hearing the parking situation is awful and was warned not to drive if I didn't have to on Oahu but I don't really want to rely on a bus and want all the benefits of having our own car to use.
Malaekahana Beach Campground (not the state park/campground) has the best prices and a lovely beach. Their top shelf Hale Suit cabins are primitive, have a toilet, and bunk style and platform beds. $117 per night for 4 people. You bring everything you need.. sheets, TP etc.. Outdoor showers. Wonderful grounds. Then the prices go down from there. Hales don't have toilets, but the restrooms are easy to get to. Then you have actual camp sites for vehicles and tents. The beach is "right there".
You two put out a good vibe that is impossible to fake! Keep up the good work! Re: "no backpacks" I think it is either for security reasons, or because they may have had too many tourists and homeless people coming on board with backpacks, which take up a lot of room. During rush hour, that would really be a problem. Also, lugging them on board, and off again, takes up more time. Speaking of which, is "island time" similar to "Brazilian time"?
Thank you for the kind words and info too! We have never been to Brazil so I can't answer that, but I'm sure it's similar if you're in the smaller towns!
Hey, did you say you can only come back before 7 PM at that camping? What if you do not have a car and you just walk. Can you do it? Also do you have a list of some other (private and most of all safe) campings on the other islands such as Maui, Kuai and Big Island? Thx.
Love this video, hubby and I every year and we always stay in a Airbnb, saves parking fees and resort fees cos all hotels have them. Also, where was the bamboo forest at? I've been wanting to go, will be there next week. Thank you for your video.
I'm curious - does Oahu not have much of the rat-lung disease that the snails spread? When you popped that fruit in your mouth straight from the tree I had a knee-jerk "NO" moment haha. Over on the Big Island everyone will tell you to scrub/wash your fruit to avoid getting the illness
Super helpfull vid! :D I'm going to explore Oahu end of January and am looking into doing some camping. What is the best way to get the camping permit and did you have any troubles with booking campsites?
This will get you started. It can be much busier in the cooler months so getting a camp permit and spot can sometimes be hard: dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/camping-lodging/oahu/
Hey guys! Thanks so much for the video! Did you spend much time on Kauai or Maui, and would you suggest them as places to stay longer term (a month)? Why or why not? I'm definitely looking for hiking/snorkling/workaways!
Kauai is beautiful! Highly recommend travelling there. We stayed for just over a week. If you were to stay longer, I highly recommend WOOFing or doing a house sit. Something that connects you with the locals a little more. The locals know where all the cool stuff really is, and you move beyond the touristy stuff :)
Everything in this video is accurate but if you want advice on oahu, ask someone who actually lives here. Everything mentioned is super touristy and there can be much better stuff to see here for cheap.

If you have a Costco card just do everything through Costco’s travel website. The overall price is hotel and airline tickets all together
Sometimes it includes a rental car and $100 credit for tours
Trust me, you’re spending way more overall

I haven't been on the island since 2010 but where is Costco? I don't remember seeing one.
I’ve backpacked Oahu and brought my entire pack on the bus several times...
That's great to know! Thank you for sharing. We just heard this from some locals, we never had a reason to try, so we never tested it.
Do they not have uber and lyft on the island? Ir is it super expensive there?
They have both in the islands and it isn't anymore expensive. They also have a VERY robust bus system that is the best option if you have the time.
Everything in this video is accurate but if you want advice on oahu, ask someone who actually lives here. Everything mentioned is super touristy and there can be much better stuff to see here for cheap.
Couldn't agree more! Locals are always the best to hang with, they always point you in the direction of the really cool stuff
You can probably still take the bus anywhere from the airport.
