    The sound is great! Currently looking for ways to record my piano play on the digital piano. Your video’s are very clear and helpful.

    Thank you for the insight…
    I am a piano beginner and my piano teacher asks me to send videos and I am thinking of recording also for the family (nothing fancy) but with IPhone only does not seem good.
    The insight of the MV88+ seems easy to use with IPhone so I am looking forward to learn more before I buy my microphone.
    Really thank you so much!!!

      Thanks for letting me know you found it interesting. I don’t know if you noticed but I have an entire playlist on recording piano with additional details about the Shure Mv88 and MV88+ as well as lots of other information on how to get the best out of it without breaking the bank. ruclips.net/p/PLOr5ZFp3F4-R6sCKwm4ToT5_erwqvJPTz

    Love watching your videos! Could you use mv88 and mv88+ configured as bidirectional microphones to record the grand piano using Blumlein technique? Thank you!

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  2 года назад

      That is a very interesting question and I think the answer is yes. Naturally, you would need two devices and tripods/stands to position them appropriately. You’d then need to align the files in your DAW and mix appropriately but it would be possible. However, because the microphones aren’t a ‘matched pair’ the mixing would be a little more awkward to iron out discrepancies between the two. I will give it a try myself when I have time. You do know that you can get Mid-Side using a single mic though which is an interesting way of recording.

    Thank you for your great information on recording piano at home. I have had a Shure MV88plus for a few years and am very happy with it. However, I am thinking of upgrading to another Shure microphone. Can you please do a review of the Shure Motiv MV51? It is compatible with iphone and android with the correct cables. It can also use the Motiv app.

    • @TommysPianoCorner

      Hi. I don’t actually have an MV51. However, one very clever feature of the MOTIV app is that if you open it without plugging in your microphone, it gives you the possibility to preview all compatible mics. The MV51 is there so you can definitely use it with the app. On looking at the preview of it, one thing I noticed is that you can’t change the polar pattern as you can with the MV88+. This may or not matter to you.
      Equally, it does not record a left and right channel (so would be mono rather than stereo). Again, this may or may not matter to you. Most piano recordings seem to be captured in stereo but a voice would usually be captured in mono.
      Hope that helps :-)

      Hi. Please excuse the direct message to you. I'm in the process of creating an online course to help people record piano at home by themselves or with limited help from a friend. Would you be open to an email or zoom-type chat on what brought you to recording piano and the challenges you have faced over the years? My email is tommy@tommyspianocorner.com

    Could you use your mv88 and mv88+ configured with the widest polar pattern as the spaced pair? Thank you!

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  2 года назад

      Using the ‘stereo’ setting you effectively get something approaching a spaced pair. If you used both on cardioid setting and placed them appropriately you would get the equivalent of a spaced pair (combining files in your DAW).

    Bonjour Tommy,
    Sur Amazon, il est dit que le MV88+ N'EST PAS compatible avec le Ipad Pro. C'est exact? Savez-vous si on peut le brancher sur un MacBookPro?
    Gilles.

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  3 года назад

      Bonjour Gilles. [English Translation Below]. La réponse est oui et non. Lorsqu’on connecte le MV88+ à l’IPad Pro (version USB-C), l’appli MOTIV ne le reconnaît pas en tant que MV88+. Il le voit simplement comme ‘external mic’. Vous pouvez modifier le gain mais rien d’autre. Par contre, en le branchant d’abord sur un iPhone pour modifier les différents paramètres, le MV88 les utilise par la suite. Donc, on peut faire avec mais c’est pas top. Pour un MacBook, c’est la même chose. On peut modifier le gain dans un appli tel que Garageband mais pour affecter le reste il faut le brancher sur un iPhone (ou Android bien sur).
      The answer is yes and no. When you connect the MV88+ to an iPad Pro (the version with a USB-C connector), the Shure MOVTIV app simply sees it as an external microphone. It will allow you to set the gain but nothing else. However, if you’d first plug it into an Android or iPhone, then whatever settings you make will be remembered by the MV88+ and subsequently used when it is connected to the iPad Pro. So, there is a workaround but it’s not great. In terms of a MacBook, it’s the same situation . You can set the gain using an app such as GarageBand, but nothing else without connecting to an iPhone/Android phone.

      Bonjour Gilles, vous trouverez aujourd'hui une vidéo qui adresse j'espère votre question sur la compatibilité entre l'iPad Pro et la MV88+. J'ai fait quelques essais pour voir quels sont les problèmes.

    What's the piece you're playing here? I know it's probably a stupid question, but I can't remember the name, haha.

    • @TommysPianoCorner

      Hi. The main demo is Bach’s C Major Prelude, the clipping example is Chopin’s ‘Funeral March’ Prelude. The tiny fragment at the front is from Chopin’s C Sharp Minor Waltz. You can find all of these on IMSLP.
      Do you have an MV88+ or other microphone?

      @@GuidoHendriks1990 I hope to soon be able to confirm whether the MV88+ will connect to the new usb-c iPhone (iPhone 15). The phone is due to arrive today so I’ll finally be able to test it. I know it now works with the usb-c iPad Pro but you never know :-)

    Hi, using limiter will prevent clipping?

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner  5 месяцев назад +1

      Theoretically it can - depending on the settings used. However, aggressive limiting we use, the more obvious it becomes.
      I personally would try as much as possible to set the gain such that we don’t clip and perhaps consider adding gentle limiting as a fail safe :-)
