Two of the greatest guitarist in the country field. Actually just as versatile in jazz. Buddy Emmons and Leon Rhodes. Many thanks to Ernest Tubb who put them on stage..

His voice was as dry as the Texas landscape, as I remember it. It wasn't artificial just natural, that's why I like it.

In about 1963 or so a friend took me to see the Troubadours and I was lucky enough to go back stage and speak with Leon. He told me to always pick in both directions - start each stroke from wherever the pick laid and not to reset and start with a down stroke with new phrases,
Good advice I never forgot. Thanks Leon.

I got to know Buddy very well in the mid-1970s after he left the road life and returned to his home in Virginia. He was a brick layer with his father and I was a budding country music jock at Big K Radio in Warrenton. Buddy played Saturday night gigs with one of our other DJs as the singer. Buddy and I played a lot of golf together. A good time in my life... Buddy was such a nice guy! So easy to like and get along with. And man-o man-could he shred on that steel guitar!

Not Buddy Emmons, but Buddy Charleton on steel, rest in peace. People argue Emmons is the best ever, but the era of the Texas Troubadours with Charleton on steel, about '62 to '72, was known as the Great Band, or the greatest incarnation of the band.
Leon's wide-eyed look at 1:00 is great... I have to believe he was experiencing a partial face-melting from Charleton.

A couple of people have commented on the reverb effect used in this clip. If you get the chance to see more from this syndicated series, you'll notice that the effect is being applied to the full program mix, with the audio operator bringing that reverb level up and down as needed. In some other clips, he's late dialing it down when the song ends, and Ernest starts talking.
This was recorded in a commercial TV station, with 60's era broadcast equipment as opposed to recording studio gear. This sounds like a mechanical steel plate reverb, which would have been very common then in a TV station environment.

  • @whatthehellbrosef

Many comments are getting the players' names wrong or mixed up. In this video crica 1965, the members of Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadours were:
    Bass: Jack Drake
    Drums: Jack Greene
    Rhythm guitar: Cal Smith
    Lead guitar: Leon Rhodes
Sho-Bud double-ten pedal steel guitar: Buddy Charleton

"Nashville cats play clean as country water". When John Sebastian wrote Nashville Cats for the Lovin' Spoonful he must have had Leon Rhodes in mind. No slurs, bends or overdriven distorted sounds.....just pure clean, melodic jazzy licks. Leon was the best.

Hey, don't y'all hear Ernest Tubb saying, "Leon and Buddy wrote that"
He's referring to Leon Rhodes who is playing (the heck out of the) guitar and Buddy Emmons on Steel. Country music legends. Both Leon and Buddy are still alive and well. Leon is, for sure, still playing the heck out of the guitar with The Whites on the Grand Ol' Opry on a regular basis.

@Playroute66....This is that wonderful place in between the world of Hank Williams and the world of Glen Miller that is categorized as Western Swing! Yes...you're right, it is swing...and yes it is good ol' American "country" too. And all of it, no matter what label you put on it...is essentially a form of jump blues with a different flavor of spice on it, when played at this tempo. Slow it way down and you make a waltz or a Texas two-step out of it too. It's all good!
