  • This BenQ HT1075 DLP Projector was sent in by a viewer who was having unusual overheating issues. He was able to clean it but upon re-assembly he was not getting light. After sending it to me, I found that the Colorwheel wire had cracked at the connector, preventing connection. There was also a miss-connection between the DMD board and the Mainboard.
    In this video, I repair the color wheel cable and get the projector back up and running. While testing for a long period, I found the projector is overheating after 1-2 hours. There will be a second video about diagnosing and repair for this overheating issue. Once posted, it will be linked here.

    Hi Frank. Usually, where are the dust blobs deposited? Light hazy green spots, on the black screen. I have blown in air into the light engine through the "inspection" cover, as you did in one of your videos, removed the IC and cleaned it, and those blobs still show up on the black screen, like I didn't even do anything to it. This is a Benq HT2050, by the way. It is very similar to the 1070.

    Hi, I have a BenQ projector that failed with a temp indicator lamp, the tangential lamp fan had failed. I got a replacement, the fan wasn’t for my specific model but it was a three wire fan and the voltage and current rating on the motor was identical. Fitted the fan and the fault is still the same, it powers up fine but after a few minutes it shuts down and the temp lamp is on?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Месяц назад +1

      The fan is probably not compatible. There are multiple types of similar sized fans. The error reporting is likely different. You really want to buy the same exact model fan. Otherwise the CFM and error reporting will usually be correct. This is partly why people can't install Noctua fans into projectors. The specs that matter are different. You should be able to find a new fan that is the same. Even searching your model and "Fans" may be good enough to find the right brand. Good luck!

    I have a friends BenQ DLP projector here because it's overheating after around 5 minutes of usage.
    It turns on fine and the projected image is impecable. Then, after around 5 minutes, it shuts down with the "Temp" status LED lit.
    I checked the fans, they all seem to be turning fine. I removed all the dust though there wasn't much to start with.
    The lamp has around 900 hours on it but seems fine visually (red coating, no visible white deposits).
    Do you have any advice where to go from here? Thanks!
    I measured the little fans (the one directly cooling the lamp) consumption: It's given on its housing with 12V / 0.15A, it consumed only 0.5A@12V while running...could this be a problem?
    The temperatures when the temp shutdown occures are the following:
    - on the top of the housing just above the lamp around 60°C (140 freedom°)
    - the lamp itself after removing the cover just after the shutdown ~100 °C (212 freedom °)
    - pointing inside the front fan 70°C (158 freedom °).

      Check the service menu. One of the fans is not spinning properly or is not reporting its speed properly. I suspect the center blower fan myself. The service menu will say which fan stalled/errored.

    W1070 overheats. Thanks for your vids I gave it a good cleanout of the lamp area, the lamp cooler fan which I dismantled and there was not a significant amount of dust but now all shiny but it now cuts out after about 5 minutes although it lasted for about 1 hour before I started the clean! Just wondered if I got the side fans correct, Do they exhaust from the projector of blow in? Also, can you tell me the size of the 5 screws which secure the top of the projector. It seems like 2 have run away. Thanks

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  6 месяцев назад

      I have a link that shows the fan direction. I know the one near the lamp blows out and the one near the DMD blows in. I think the one by the power supply blows out too. If you are getting a temp error and it shuts down, then you have a fan reversed. If you have a lamp error when it shuts down, check the color wheel. The screws are 3mm Helical thread if I recall correctly.

    I have a 1075 and I have to manually set the fan speeds higher in order to stop the projector from over heating. This is becoming annoying. Do you think replacing the thermal paste on the optical heat sync will resolve this issue or do I have a bad temp sensor? I have already done a full tear down and cleaning as well as replaced Fan 1 as that was failing before making the projector overheat within minutes.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 года назад +1

      Hi Adam, I'd replace the exhaust fan(#3) and maybe the blower fan. I've seen both wear out. The blades tend to warp and decrease their efficiency. More so the exhaust fan. Your main heat source is the lamp. Getting that air out is what you're going for. If high altitude mode is working then that's fine what I would look into. I don't have it finished yet but I'm fixing a 1075 right now that needs a new exhaust fan. I used a known good fan from another projector and confirmed that was the solution. The blades on the old fan had began to warp and lose their airfoil shape. I think that will solve it. A bad temp sensor would shut you down instantly rather than let it work for a while.

    • @adamsawz4773
      @adamsawz4773 4 года назад

      Thanks man I'll swap those out and see how it goes. Didn't even think about lamp heat warping the fan fins. Figured they should be rated to withstand high temps.... Oh well, I guess I expected more haha.

Now i turn it on , and crashes after being on for 5 to 7 mins... power light turns red, and lamp indicator turns red.... SO is this a heat issue ? or a lamp Issue... Or a software issue ... I dont get a led for heat , no orange or light coming on for heat indicator menu button... SO is this a lamp issue and over heating ... or a firmware software boot up issue... Hours on my projector since buying it are 20 to 30 hours on the lamp

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Год назад

      If the color flickers before shut down, that is a color wheel issue. Either the wheel itself is the problem or the lamp assembly has an incorrect IR/UV filter. If the lamp assembly was changed recently and the issue started then, that would be my suspicion.

    Ok, then I got the same HT 1075 and I got the question. It's been used in the hot weather on the vacation for a few days. It started to overheat. Then we lost the black tape from the color wheel. It didn't even turn on. I cut the black tape on my own and put it on the color wheel. It stared perfectly with a working lamp but them red flashing light started. So now the color wheel and all the fans work but the lamp doesn't flash at all. Question: Does lamp replacement is just only option or it's all about the wrong size of black tape at the color wheel? Thank you.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 года назад

      Hello! That could be the problem. The lamp will not ignite if the color wheel sensor is not being recognized by the sensor. I would recommend making sure the square is the same size. It also must be in the same position. You may have already done that(putting it in the same position) but if it is too wide the pulse will also be too wide and cause problems. I would replace the color wheel when it is convenient for you but until then using black tape or even a black paint marker will work. It just has to be a matte-black to interrupt the infrared light being used to sense the index position of that black mark. If your lamp was working, there is no reason to think it has failed yet. You should at least hear a buzzing or hissing noise when the lamp tries to start. Another symptom is if the wheel spins erratically. Goes fast and slow and fast. That is a bad index mark as well.

    Hi,
    I have a Benq MS500+ that seems to auto power off within 35-40 seconds. I’ve check lamp hours and its nowhere near time to change. I’m a lil tech savvy so I even opened the unit and ensured no loose connectors, etc. I even went as far as “visually” checking certain components(like capacitors) on the boards and couldn’t really see any evidence of damage or possible fault.
    I also have a Benq MP515 which had shattered a lamp. I ordered a new lamp, cleaned out the unit and it comes on or about 20+secs then switches off in what i believe is overheat protection.
    Where do i start looking to sort these out?
    I’m currently stuck and would appreciate any and all help to resolve the matter.
    Thanks in advance
    Zahir

      if the lamp is new, see if it has the wrong IR cut filter. The glass on the lamp should be red/purple in color. If it is clear or green, that is the problem. Otherwise, a stuck fan or possibly a dirty color wheel sensor.

      Hello Giuseppe! How old is the lamp assembly? It sounds like a lamp problem to me. I find that most issues like this end up being a lamp problem. Not always of course, but most times.
      If the lamp assembly was replaced recently, then I would check the lens on the front. If the lamp is older, I would try a new lamp assembly or buy just the Osram bare lamp and swap it out. An incorrect ND lens on the lamp assembly can cause this as can a failing lamp. There are other causes too, but this tends to be the most common in my experience.

    Hi frank. I have a BenQ W1500. My uncle just shipped it to me from the west coast to the east coast, it was working just a week ago when he had it, worried it somehow got damaged with careless shippers.
    Loads up and displays fine, then after about 20 seconds the screen turns off (audio still playing for another 20 seconds or so, then that stops as well). It has a red power & green temperature light after this. The 3 fans you can see from the outside all look like they're moving. I gave it a good air spray for dust from the outside, there's quite a bit, but that didn't fix anything.
    Based on your videos im worried it might be a past broken lamp piece of glass in the middle fan or color wheel. Might have to take it apart and find out.
    Any suggestions where you would look?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 года назад

      There is that squirrel cage type fan(blower fan) in the middle. That fan can get jammed really easily. If you can reach a cotton swab into the duct and gently push on the fan blades, you should feel it move easily or it'll feel stuck. If it sticks briefly and then turns, I bet a chunk of old lamp comes out. If a lamp burst inside in the past, its almost definite that some quartz got inside. The temp LED is indicating 'fan lock' so at least one fan is stuck or not reporting that its turning. If you can see the other 3 fans turning, then the only fan out of view is the blower fan. Thats the one you want to check.

    Frank I have a BenQ W1070 that projects a black dot in the upper Right hand corner.I believe this might be a bad DMD chip.Is it worth repairing?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 года назад

      Personally I think so. The w1070 still is a good projector even by today's standard. It's a 1080p native and has a decent lumen rating. You can find chips relatively cheap these days. Black spots is interesting though. I've only seen white specs from the mirrors. Could you post a pic of the problem? Just in case it's not the dmd.

    Frank I have a android projector model: sync display ( exactly what ID Label says) System is about 2 months old. I have no audio from projector audio ports. ( I have a headset and a AV port) I use I got a Tannic X6s TV Box, Box has BT so I am using a external BT control to send audio to Sound system for room. ( its a trans/receive BT 5.0 Box) Not sure if there is a reset for projector audio or not. But for now I have been using BT audio from TX6s-h... Any ideas? I never did get audio from projector to work... David

      Im sorry David. Those android projectors are a nightmare to deal with. The manufacturers never have any info and last time I tried to find parts for one, it was like it never existed. reddit r/projectors might have better info. I wish I could help more but the data on those is so scarce.

    Hi Frank, great video. I have the w1070 model. I started to wear out the lamps very quick. My last 2 lamps lasted for betwen 30 hours and 100 hours. I read in a forum that leaking dc current can cause this behaviour. Do you think my ballast is going bad?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 года назад

      Hi Thomas! I don't think its your ballast. It really depends on how your lamps failed, and what kind of lamps they were. If you bought aftermarket lamps, there is a large range of quality. The lower the price, the exponentially lower the quality. The lamp for the W1070 can't be any cheaper than about $80-90USD. Under that, the companies cut too many corners and use sub-par bulbs and housings.
      The other cause of early failure is excessive heat. Not hot enough to cause an error, but hot enough to cause the lamp to wear faster. The blower fan is the most common culprit if you had an old lamp that burst. The blower fan tends to hold glass bits inside and dust that prevents proper airflow. Check my Cleaning the W1080 video. The insides are the same as the W1070. I also suspect your exhaust fan. The exhaust fan can spin properly yet not move enough air and that will cause excessive heat that wears out a lamp faster.
      If your ballast was bad, you would get an immediate failure. They tend to work or not work. I'm sure it can happen, but I have never seen it myself.
      Where did you buy your last lamp if you don't mind my asking? I think we should start troubleshooting there.

      @@FixitFrank thanks for your quick reply. I bought it on Amazon for 55 Euro, approx $65USD. Now that I have watched your videos, I understand the little glass piece on the housing is an important filter. The picture of the housing on Amazon has a red shimmer on the glass, but in reality it has a green shimmer. The bulb has no text on it except PJxJ, the brand of housing and lamp is Populsell. I will purchase a proper lamp and do the cleaning as you suggested. Thanks again!

    lines in dlp pj does it always means loose connection or dust in the connection part dmd socket ---- or may be bad dmd chip ?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 года назад +1

      You can think of all of those as a bad connection. The connection can be prevented by dust but not unless the board was removed to allow dust in. Bad solder, loose DMD socket can cause it. I think this case it was not set down straight but I am not sure. The line is due to missing data that tells the chip what to do with those lines.

      @@rahulkumar-qu2xo Almost always. I will never say never but it would be very rare for a bad dmd to have lines. I would expect stuck mirrors with white dots or blurry with burn-in.
