Great racing back then. It was probably the last asphalt track race where front engine roadsters and dirt cars out numbered the rear engine cars. The reason was that there were many who still felt the track would be harder on the rear engine cars suspensions..(Foyt example) and that since it was a stock car track for the most part, the heavier roadsters would fair better...which they did...6 of the top 10 spots were front engines. I actually saw Andretti's front engine earlier at Trenton in April '65. Thanks for the post.

@@MrChristopherHaas When I was in grade school I had a book "Winners Never Quit" featuring athletes who suffered life - threatening injuries and came back. Most never regained their glory days, but the point was to showcase fortitude and guts. Jim was one of them, with his horrific burns, who had the doctor bend his worthless hands into a shape allowing him to 'grip' a steering wheel...still remember that so many years ago.

I loved the old configuration of the Atlanta Motor Speedway with its quarter-mile straights and half-mile turns . . . a true _driver's track._

With some digging on the 'web, the racing reference webpage provides stats about this race.
One stat that stood out was the pole qualifying speed of 166 mph; which made it faster than Indy that year with the speed of 161 mph.

Johnny Rutherford driving the #2 car was owned by Bob Wilke, where up to that time the Wilke car had been driven by Rodger Ward. The bit of online info has it that Ward left the Wilke team after failing to qualify for the 1965 Indy 500.

why are you posting the exact same videos that someone else posted a month ago?

I wanted to upload the races individually because it’s a rare IndyCar race that way people can watch the races.
Don’t worry, of course I’m giving credit to movracefan!

Today AJ Foyt would be accused of cheating. They’d say how else could he be so dominant in this race. He cheated. The fact that he didn’t cheat is irrelevant.

It's not cheating if you don't get caught... Racing rule number one
