This U.S.A.C. (United States Auto Club) sanctioned race for Indianapolis Champ Cars, Milwaukee August race won by Joe Leonard [1932 - 2017] of California in 1970 was the only race he won in '70. All-in-all, Leonard won 6 Indy Car races in his career with that form of racing. His first win was in 1965 at "The Milwaukee Mile". Twice, Joe was crowned U.S.A.C. National Champ: 1971 & '72. Talented and a fair amount of determination made him intresting to watch through the years. Unfortunately, his career in auto racing ended in 1974 at the "California 500" at Ontario Motor Speedway in a severe crash on lap 146 of the 200 lap event. Extensive leg and foot injuries ended his career.

This was when racing was racing......but, unfortunately the cars had no cage and many drivers died. Bryan won the National Champ 3 times and the Indy 500.....but that was just before TV started covering racing, so he is barely known today.

I absolutely LOVE this "Golden Era" of IndyCar racing. Roadsters, Dirt Champ Cars and roaring and growling Offenhauser 4 cylinder monsters. The 1950's thru the 1960's is, to me, the "Best of Times."

This was a game card show. Local businesses handed out game pieces with numbers. You saw if your numbers matched with show as it went along.

Those grandstands remain to this day. Nowadays, when the Arizona State Fair rolls around in October, that's where we go to see monster trucks, figure-eight racing, and rodeos. The seats are just big oversized steps made out of concrete. Boy, we've come a long way as far as fan comfort goes.

That my friends is what racing WAS all about and should be today. Only the Winged Sprints can equal those days.

I remember going to Riverside as a kid, my father raced motorcycles there in the 70’s. I’ll never forget the smells of the fuel. There was another raceway closer to us OCIR. Do you have any video of that track?

Other than the caution inconsistency and awful NASCAR Refball that we saw take place today, it was a good race to me and I enjoyed it with the pit strategy, fuel mileage and green flag stops + some big wrecks although while I am frustrated with the finish of the race, I understand in some capacity as NASCAR didn’t want a repeat of Nashville. I’m just glad Larson got his redemption from May and hope he gets his 2nd redemption next May as well by trying the double again without the stupid ass rain getting in the damn way. Good stuff Ian! Not one pass for the lead under green. That is sad. The brickyard has never had a car even close to the leader at the end of all races on the oval.

As much as I'm happy Kyle Larson got the Month of May Redemption at The Brickyard, The Finish of this race couldn't have been anymore disappointing and You can all Thank The Other Kyle (KFB) for it

Finally.I have been waiting for to post.I was 12 when my dad and some friends went to see this. The thing about this race was rear engine cars , roadsters and old dirt cars plus Novis

My first Indy car race..5 years old. Guess I did pretty good as dad took me to Indianapolis 3 years later. I dont remember much about the race except when IIRC Parnelli got the lead..people figured the big car will back slide. When Foyt took the lead back coming off 4, the place went crazy.

Nice clip Ian. I really love this era of the AAA then USAC Champ Dirt Car races on the old Fair Grounds Mile Dirt! The 1950's thru the end of the 1960's is my central favorite time and Series "The USAC Championship Trail." Please keep posting any of these that you discover...Thanks, Tim
