As an aspiring horseman, I am so grateful we have people like Steve showing how we can work with horses instead of using intimidation and fear. I can not help but feel we are in a truly special time, were these amazing techniques and mindset are finally becoming more mainstream. The likes of Tom and Buck have laid the foundations and now people like Steve and in the future myself, are building the house. Great work Steve and keep it up.
Loved Betty. Charlotte had done some great work. For an 18 month old horse she did learn quickly and, as usual, was loving on Steve, who so connects through horse language. And keep including your travels and chat. Thanks Tanya’s as always for your patience in doing and catching everything on video.
I so look forward to your videos, Steve and Tanya. Watching you two interact with each other, eating at the pubs after working, and seeing the transformation of each horse gives me so much happiness inside. Thanks for being so dedicated and for including us in your journeys. God bless you.
I dont own a horse, but if I did, I think it would have to be a Shire. Such a majestic mellow minded being. Such a pleasure to watch the horse understand what you are trying to say to them. And they get it too!
She maybe 4 and bigger than Steve but she looks like a sweet baby. To remember she needs to learn now so both of you are safe. 💞🐴 Shes a beautiful colour too!
I started messing with mine when I got her , never been ridden. I'd often sit on her a few minutes, get used to it. She never minded, im under 6% of her bodyweight. One day she read me like a book and started going where I wanted to go without a halter or saddle on. They are BRIGHT and possibly the easiest horse to train to ride hand free. One day there had been work done to her enclosure. When I got on, she wouldnt go where I wanted. So I said fine, lets see. She brought me to inspect all the things one by one and then went straight to going where I wanted to go earlier. It`s an amazing breed but you need to really bond to get their full potential. I got lucky she choosed me, our trust in each other is beyond anything I ever felt.
Great video. Thanks. Betty is beautiful. Drafts have sweet personalities, but then I love all horses. Tanya, I love donkeys, too. They can be so loyal and cuddly.
Great video today! Growing up in western Wyoming, I always owned quarter horses. But I always admired draft horses, so I really enjoyed watching this. Charlotte has obviously worked hard with Betty, especially employing your training methods…it shows by how easily she picked up on your additional commands. She only needed a couple of clarifications with your spot on timing to understand what you were asking. She is going to be a great project for Charlotte. What a wonderful team they will be! ❤❤❤
Same, I admired the draft horses. But when I got the chance to own, I quickly found out the biggest difference in (in my case) shire was not their immense size and pretty, stout looking looks. It was their mind.
Great video! Learned a lot ….now I don’t have a horse but, I use some of your stuff on my cat! This morning I was trying to get him to take his “fur ball” medication. He was not having it…then he gave me a “try” …I praise him and fussed on him…offered the pill again and he gobbled it down…😊. Last thing …AN OLD BENTLY!!! WOW!!!
As a shire enthusiast, I especially like when you work with draft horses. This one being a shire is even special to me. Shires still grow into their 7th year and we should let them grow at least 5 before hard work training. The specie has been miniaturised by bad breeders breeding mares at 3 yo. But it may have helped avoid extinction. Shires are a bit more lively than most draft horses. They love understanding. I always give them ample time to decide after a command, and that made them extremely calm as well as unlikely to spook. They pause and make sense of anything new. I've never had as much fun testing the intelligence of horses than with the shire and that's where I fell in love. Once they trust you as a friend, they are nothing short of amazing.
Loved Charlotte and Betty. It was clear to see that Charlotte is very experienced and so willing to learn. Just lovely. And she prepared Betty so well already..they are going to be a great team.
Wow! I would have been there for a while, looking at everything! I love learning about history through objects, like the steam engines, and cars. I used to collect 1940's kitchen items, with a few from the '30's and a couple from the '60's. That horse was beautiful. Thanks, Steve. Take care, Jennifer San Francisco Bay area USA
I live in Florida and watch every video you put up. I grew up on horses, but haven't had one of my own in 20 years. I live vicariously through you. Love the American flag on your sweat shirt Steve.
Glad to see the safety reminder re having your head above your horse's! For whatever reason, that was never pointed out to me. I now have a permanently damaged vein in my lower lip that regularly blows up with any added pressure, ie bending over to tie my shoes! I was very lucky to escape with just, to quote my riding companion at the time, the world's biggest fat lip!😳🤕😵💫
Brilliant VLOG as always. What a lovely Shire filly Betty is … I’m sure Charlotte will be very happy with her. You could see she’d already done quite a bit of work with her. Happy early birthday Tanya … have a lovely time in Spain. I hope the weather’s lovely for you guys. Maybe send a bit of it here in our direction. We’re currently experiencing what they call a polar vortex! Means it’s quite cold!🥶 Looking forward to the next one! Happy trails! 🙌🙏❤️🇨🇦🐴🐎🫏🌸
You can see the work Charlotte has already been implementing with Betty. Then Steve does his magic & Betty absorbed it all like a sponge. What a horse she is going to be! Great vid once again.
What a beautiful horse and look at the shine on her coat. Love watching you Steve and how the horses know who you are and what you want as soon as you take the rope. Simply mesmerising. 😍
Another fabulous. But I am dying to know when you're coming to N. Carolina! I would love to see you in person.

Amazing video again. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Steve met the Moons to raise awareness of their fantastic horse rescue charity and I’m sure would bring both You Tubers to a greater audience. Thank you for all you guys do.
Thoroughly enjoy your videos for their teaching value, but just love your personality and partnership. God bless you both. Enjoy your birthday getaway, Tanya. Well done, Steve.
If I may add my two cents worth...I'm 70 years old with one very arthritic knee. I still ride light horses every now and then, but most of my time with horses is spent driving them (track horses, Standardbreds). It's just physically easier. She might consider having this filly trained for driving, and enjoy her that way. Just a thought....
I loved Charlotte! I think she will do fine with Betty; she was much more receptive to your teaching than some others. I’d love to see the 2 of them next year. Way to go, Charlotte!
Steve & Tanya remind me ‘I’m proud to be British! I live in Australia but love following their journey. I was in a 3 Day Mountain Bike Race in 2018, Day 1 my front wheel hit a stone obscurely causing me to go head first over the handle bars resulting in me having severe brain trauma 😬, but I thank God Ian still alive, recovering all the time. Have relocated to a property with acreage so I can have my beautiful TB horse, Lola. Steve’s teaching has inspired me greatly. My life has changed dramatically with the accident but I am grateful for my life, husband and animals. Having Steve, although on the TV is such a help, and I am so grateful 👌🥰👍.
🥂🎂✨💐 Happy Birthday on the 17th of January Tanya! You two are such a precious, loving, wonderful, inspiring couple. Thank you for sharing a bit of your lives as well your wonderful horse and people transformations with all of us!
I love this video. Shire horses are my favorite! I used to have horses when I was younger, and I finally got 2 horses after not having horses in my life for 25 years. I have learned so much from watching your videos, Steve! Happy birthday, Tanya! You share my oldest son's birthday. He will be 21 years old on the 17th. I hope you have a wonderful trip! I hope someday you will come to Northern California because I would love to go to a clinic or ranch day.
Happy birthday, Tanya, have a lovely trip! I had a good laugh watching this video when you showed people showing heavy horses and Steve said, " ba-dump, ba-dump, ba-dump..."❤
Betty is a beauty~~ A powerful horse I just love them💖 Steve is so kind and effective. Lots of times I have difficulty understanding Steve when he talks fast. Learning 😁
Wonderful video and such a fast learning, beautiful horse! LOVED all the vehicles and motorcycles, too! In the end you had a bunch of birds at the feeder with Tanya 💕! Well-rounded video! Thank you, you two! 💕
Have a beautiful birthday Tanya 🎂 and have a wonderful time on your little trip, you both deserve it . I enjoy all your videos and the banter of you both such delightful people all the best a true fan from New Jersey 🇺🇸
Great video like always. Charlotte has done a lot of good work on this very young mare. Fun fact: As Betty is already so tall, but her body still has the shape of a baby horse, in this video Steve looks really tiny, compared to the other videos
I always liked big horses because they’re harder to fall off of but this might be taking that a bit further than I’d want to go! PS: joking aside, it’s obvious that Betty wouldn’t have been such a quick learner if Charlotte weren’t an even quicker learner! Seeing her focus so intently on Steve and the horse at the same time was a real learning experience for me. And lovely to see all this productive work and feel that it’s going to stick.
It's not so bad, we get used to the size and get rewarded handsomely. I have a 17.1 grey shire and im 5`6" So she's much taller than me and I jump on just fine. What you are not factoring in, is that such a horse wont be bothered if you pull yourself on, it wont send it sideway :D. When I go through branches, I roll on her side and in we go ! Shires have been my best horse experience. A horse with the courage of a wolf
@SocialShires As I said, joking aside. I was really impressed by the Shires. I had Hannoverians, mostly around 16.2 or 3, not so wide, at a time when the idea was to breed riding horses, not specialists, and it seems that that's the way the Shire breed is being maintained -- as pleasurable riding horses. A great way to save a breed left behind by mechanized agriculture.
@@mollyLouM Yes. they look good they feel good and they always surprise you in the best way. I dont count the times where my experience told me to brace up, and the shire never had the anticipated issue. Sometimes they'll simply stop. And if you let them stop they think it through for a second and you can resume. They wont easily go for the flight response. They have somewhat desensitized me and I always have to be extra extra careful now with smaller horses.
Yay another cracking video guys!💖 Happy birthday Tan! 🍢🍸🎂🍤Another January babe..arent we the best?! Lol I hope you have a lovely trip to Spain both of you! Back to Malaga?.. (Id love to see you in Madrid but the weather is crap and you've seen enough of that)! Should be warmer thzn here though!! I dont believe Steve when he says no horses....I bet there will beat least one!!!😉🤣🤣🤣
Didn't mean to start learning from these videos, but as you've said you love reading the comments, I have to say that I can't stop watching them, they are super addictive. I've only a very tiny bit of experience around horses, including an encounter with an all black Arabian stallion, that was such a diva, but apparently with a ton of money. I love the Draft breeds, and have ridden a Cobb a few times, got to canter, but it's become so expensive that I've had to get to see how I can set up a Rescue Centre, for Horses and Donkeys, as well as breed big dogs. Going to get the membership when I can :)
Betty is one beautiful shire horse and responded well to the master Steve. Charlotte will feel much less worried about her own legs now she controls Betty's. Loved Tanyas exit video, do it all the time girl. Happy trails to Tesco. Happy Holiday in Spain too.
In an ideal world, its better to not teach horses new things between the ages of around 18 months to 2.5 years, if possible. They tend to be especially difficult around then, like teenage humans. Just continue with what has already been taught up until that point, and wait it out. With my foals, I have all the basic handling done by then (catch, lead, touch all over, flexing, yields, spooky objects, loading). I save myself a lot of trouble by not introducing new concepts until around 2.5 years, when they're often much more sensible.
I have been binge watching your videos and they are all amazing. I especially liked this as I saw some finer details I have not seen in other videos where the horse was more problematic. Grateful for all these videos and the information you share in them.
That’s great… especially for a young draft. I have an older draft and she is resistant to letting me be alpha. Im not sure why. She lets me disengage her hindquarters. She flexes. She backs up. She lowers her head very low when she “signs up” with me in the middle… but she still wants to be in charge and pins her ears while I send her next to the fence back and forth. I had a trainer who would hit her with a whip if she wasn’t moving fast enough. And she hasn’t figured out that I won’t do that. I’ve let that trainer go… but she still pins her ears when I circle her in the round pen. Another online coach said I need to yield her more. I have but nothing has changed. I do ride her on occasion and when my husband is home. But not often, now that winter is here. She is nervous with the trailer and me mounting her from our tall mounting block. I will keep working with her, of course, but I wish I had a gentle coach that could come out sometime. I’ve tried locally but they are too busy
Betty is a magnificent horse, she was trying so hard. Another great video, thank you Steve xx

Lovely to see these magnificent horses enjoying ridden sports - they are the descendants of the noble steeds ridden by knights of old.

I’ve had my boy from 11 months old and he’s boarded, he’s now 14 years old but has become super bonded to his herd. Hard to work with him.
Loved how Steve got the equivalent of a tap on the lead rein when he mentioned getting an old motorbike. 🙂
