    What a brilliant video Thom - such a good philosophy! I am retired now, used to be a teacher and mentored new teachers. Always used to impress on individuals how important it is to develop a range of skill sets and be adaptable. until you have developed a range of skill sets it is almost impossible to adapt to different scenarios in the classroom. Many teachers never do and they are the "mechanical" teachers, others do and they experience far greater success with the kids. All that you have said and described in this video chimes so well. I know that in fishing I often fall back on what I know rather than developing - the complete opposite of what I did in my working life!!! Thanks for jolting me a bit in my fishing, especially now I am retired with more time - a light bulb moment! Keep these vids coming please and thank you.

      Hi Graham, sorry for the delay I try and get back to everyone that takes the time to comment but somehow missed your message! Yes totally agree if you want to get to the top in any given field then self development is critical! Glad it was a useful video for you let me know how you get on with your lure fishing in retirement!

    What i like to do is on beginning of fishing day catch few fish (even if they are small) with stuffs i am confident to fish with- just to boost my confidence and then rest of day experiment and trying to learn new stuffs. Mostly it works quite well and its really fun

    I really recommend to change your tactics every season and learn always. 5 year ago I mainly was catching jackpike on lake, 4 years I did perchfishing, jiging in r Thames. 3ya small River Kennet catching chubs and perch on crank baits. 2 ay dropshot and Texas and Carolina rigs r Thames. Last year mainly trout fishing on crankbait and pike on slider. This year plan in perch on ultralight from Thames and big pike on big lures autumn time. And there is still so many technic methods. Good like. And we have a planty tournaments this year. Thanks Thom.

    Makes sense! iv been using micro lures and small 1g jigs for the last couple of sessions, enjoying myself but catching small perch in the process, decided to change to a 8cm mcperch curly tail and 3.5g jig, within 15 minutes id already landed 2 much better fish, one close to the 1lb mark! its hard to get out of that mindset that one pattern will work. im starting to empty my small tackle boxes after each session back into my supply cabinet, then next session stock my tackle boxes back up with different lures, soft plastics ext, to keep things fresh and force myself to use different lures each session

    Hi Thom enjoying the videos picking up a few things as I go can I ask going back to the Zander video you recommended a fast action rod to set the hook due to their tough boned mouth which I can understand. My question is when would a fast action be a disadvantage species, method, etc.

    • @Thomhuntfishing
      @Thomhuntfishing  4 года назад +1

      rob busby Hi Rob, I fish through action rods specifically in a couple of instances. Firstly pike. You need a strong rod to set the hook but you want a slower action to give just a split second longer for the bait to go in the mouth properly. Also when fishing crank baits, especially ones digging in to the bottom a slower rod works better for the action of the lure and allows it to deflect and jump around more than a fast rod 👍🏻

    Hi Thom. Great stuff,thanks! I mainly fish the Llangollen canal (for ease due to disability). It's the colour of drinking chocolate 99.9% of the time. Any chance of a video on fishing very coloured water with lures, please?

    Hi Thom I'm a huge fan of Westin lures and I find your videos very helpful, thank you so much for your tips!
    Could you make a video on how to repair rubber baits? I like to use the Shad Teez for pike fishing and the pike damage my lures with their teeth. How do you fix your shads when there are cuts in the rubber from the pikes' teeth? With a lighter? Or glue?

    Do you think using a 5kg trace when fishing for bigger perch is a issue? I'm not keen fishing fluro with pike been around. I see more and more fishing flurocarbon. Thanks again for the videos.

    • @Thomhuntfishing
      @Thomhuntfishing  2 года назад +1

      5kg wire trace do you mean? For me it depends on the method. For crankbaits, chatter baits, spinners etc where fishing fast is the norm then no it makes no difference. For slower methods like Ned rigs, Texas/Carolina etc then yes Fluoro is better but when pike are around sometimes thats a sacrifice you have to make

    Hi Thom,
    I'm new to predator fishing, i'd like to have a go at some boat fishing at some local UK reservoirs like Pitsford, Rutland, Ravensthorpe etc, i'm not sure what kind of setup i would likely have the most sucess with so any expertise you could offer would be very helpfull regarding a Rod/Reel, what bait or style to use there, i've looked at the westin range of rods but have'nt a clue where to start. So many different styles of rods for different things and very confusing for a begginer.

    • @marcomeehan5117
      @marcomeehan5117 2 года назад

      I was thinking about a couple of rods that would maybe cover most of my needs, a light or medium rod for average size fish and maybe a heavier weighted rod for bigger fish, i honestly don't know.

    • @Thomhuntfishing
      @Thomhuntfishing  2 года назад

      Hi Marco, thanks for the message. So for the Reservoirs I would go for 2 rods….
      The first would be a W3 Finesse T&C in 7-21g (with a 2500 size reel and 15lb braid) this is a superb all rounder for perch, Zander and even pike (I’ve had some huge pike on this rod!) it’s my favourite rod and covers everything from dropshot to crankbaits to shads 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 (if you only want one set up this is what to go for)
      The second set up would be a heavier rod for pike that can cast up to 100g if you like baitcaster reels go for the W3 Powerstrike 8’ 40-100g
      If you prefer spinning reels go for W4 Powerlure 30-100g on the heavier rod go for 30lb braid 👍🏻
      Also check out one of my other videos I think it’s called the Ultimate Guide to Lure rods…. That should help you understand more 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      Yes that’s the one to go for…. It requires a baitcaster reel
