Take the u3/u6 from Marienplatz to Goetheplatz and walk 5 minutes to the festival. Taking the train directly to the festival is crowded. They usually reserve 80-90% of tables beforehand. You need to pre pay for drinks and a meal, you get vouchers beforehand in exchange for your payment and table reservation. You need to book out an entire table for yourself if you want a table for multiple people. A table seats about 6-8 people comfortably. A table will cost you a few hundred euros easy, and you will probably spend more money at the festival. A full beer is over 10 euro per mug. They keep around 10% of tables for walk ins. People queue up for hours normally. Your best chance is to go at odd hours to get seating at a tent. If you start waiting at 2PM maybe you can sit somewhere by 4pm. This is also dependent on the actual table set ups. You have to find space on a shared table with others. There is no real structure to this. You wait around and try to wait for a table to open up. The worst times to go are standard eating hours. 12-2PM, 6-8PM. If you go super early like at 9 am you have a better chance of finding a table. You find bookings on the official tent websites. The reservations fly so you should be booking already if that interests you. I recommend Paulaner or Augustiner.
For the Christmas markets there is nothing you need to know, there are various markets around the city, pick one that you like, buy some warm Christmas wine. I have covered a few of them! I hope you have a great time, feel free to ask me anything else you need. You can also see what the tents are like in my Oktoberfest playlist on YT
