- A late season ice and snow storm wreaked havoc on our tree peonies in early May. Our season shaped up nicely however so here is a snapshot of our most beautiful tree peonies. Enjoy!

High Noon has also been known to put out a 2nd bloom cycle in the spring, fewer blooms and certainly not often enough to rely on but it happens!

Hi Janet, I currently have 8. Some have done very well, others have struggles but always recover. I grow them in zone 5b in NY (upstate). 😊

They say 4-5 years to grow one from seed and get a bloom and that’s exactly how long it took 😊 Was a long labor of love but so rewarding. ❤️

That is a "Joseph Rock" rockii hybrd tree peony :-)

Hi Diane! Thanks for the comment, that tree peony i purchased as a seed grown white Rockii tree peony. It is similar to Joseph Rock Rockii tree peony. Most Rockii tree peonies will have this same look- large white flowers with raspberry flares. So pretty!

Hi! I do feed them, twice per year, with Neptunes Harvest Fish and Seaweed Blend emulsion. Once when they leaf out and buds are forming, and once after bloom is over. I bought this at Cricket Hill Tree Peony Farm in Thomaston, CT. They are at www.treepeony.com. They ship in fall or you can pick up in person.

Ive had some of these for years. I purchased most of them as single stem plants at nurseries that were already potted up or bareroot online and planted in the fall.

HI Janet, thanks for the comment. I am in upstate NY zone 5b. I currently (2021) have 9 total... I just LOVE them. Unfortunately this past week was bloom time for them and we had unseasonally warm temps (87! and humid) so they faded really fast... I hate when that happens... such a long wait for them but i thoroughly enjoy them.
You were not alone. I’m in Southern MAINE and my early blooms were frying even though I covered them with individual parasols.That was so sad. I’m hoping it will cool down for the rest of them. I am so impressed with your collection, great job!

Some from local nurseries… some I purchased online. A few good places to order from are: Cricket Hill Farm www.treepeony.com and some from Adelmans online… peonyparadise.com
How many years your tree peonies starts flower ?
They start blooming their 3rd year (most single stem tree peonies are 3rd year peonies). Every year after they add multiple flower buds. Most of the tree peonies i have are at least 5-6 years old...
Your tree peony’s are amazing , I have several myself but they get kind of tall and lanky.Is there a trick to keeping them shorter and bushy?
If they are ‘leggy’ they need more sun...
One thing I have found is that most nurseries will tell you to plant them in part shade... if you are in a northern climate, full sun is best! I have a few in my shade garden that are tall and lean toward the sun. I had to stake it, which I hated doing. So...Last year, after blooming, I pruned it hard! Like to 18” tall and it was over 4’. It put on new growth like crazy and I still have blooms coming this year. Also, make sure your feeding it once it wakes up in the spring, while it’s buds are forming, and then after deadheading the blooms. Neptune’s Harvest Fish and Seaweed fertilizer is amazing!

I purchased a few of my tree peonies from Cricket Hill Garden in Connecticut. They have a website www.treepeony.com and do ship. I have also purchased online from Adelmans. Their website is www.peonyparadise.com. The others I found at local nurseries in my area. 😊

There are a few places online such as www.treepeony.com and Adelmans peonies that will ship them in fall if you purchase online... They are hardy in zones 4-8 generally so make sure you check your hardiness zone. They require a certain number of hours of dormancy in the winter :-)

While small yes, but their roots get pretty wide and extensive when mature so in ground planting is recommended. 😉

Local nurseries should have them or there are reputable mail order places like Cricket Hill Farm in Thomaston CT that specialize in tree peonies and ship in the fall. Adelmans peonies online is also a great mail order company. 😊
Are tree peonies poppies?
No, they are woody stemmed peonies that don't die back to the ground like the bush peonies. They are perennial.
I've never heard of a tree peony ?I've heard of a peony bush.
Hi! Yes these are actually a type of peony that grow into small trees generally 3’-5’ tall and wide with tons of blooms as they age. The growth they produce each season turns to a woody stem with new buds for the following season. For this reason, you don’t cut them back to the ground like herbaceous or ITOH peonies in the fall.
