Nick provided Mini Fools Gold sandwiches to all guests for free at The "Cody Ray Slaughter Show" when he performed at the Lakewood Cultural Center back in 2019. We miss Nick's dearly :( I was born in 1991 and enjoyed going there for many years.

Im eating a mini version now. 2 brioche slices of bread 3 strips of crisps bacon, creamy peanutbutter, blueberry preserves, and un salted butter in the frying pan . Its like a lunch and dessert all in one.

The wall decor of Nick’s Cafe was stupendous. It’s sad that it had to close.

Now that's what I call "Keeping the Legend Alive"! Why doesn't Marlowe's add the "Fool's Gold" loaf to their regular menu all year round?

If you watched the video, you would know that Nick was closing the cafe to retire. It was his last day, and was an emotional day for him after 30+yrs. You would have also seen the other pick of Nick smiling next to Jon. I live in the area and I'm going to miss this place.

Loved the footage of you coming out of the Memphis Airport with the Fool's Gold sandwich! It looked like it was strawberry jam instead of blueberry while Nick was making it. Was it blueberry?? See you during Elvis Week, Jon!

I'd always heard and photos of the original sandwich I've seen in the past show it really loaded, with peanut butter and jelly coming out of the sides and bacon stacked up at least an inch high. And hollowed out bread to really make room to load it up. This guy just sliced it. I wouldn't pay half of $49 for that thing now, much less in 1977. My regular peanut butter and jelly sandwiches look better than that, I just need to add a few strips of bacon. I'll have to get a loaf of French bread the next time I'm at the store and try to make one at home.

This was his last day at the Cafe so no the sandwich wasn’t like the earlier ones. The $49 was from the original menu of the Colorado Mine company not Nick’s Cafe.

Actually that price ($49), ($37.95 before that) was basically a joke. It said on the menu that the "Price is negotiable". I'm from Denver and my Dad was friends with the owner and we used to eat there even before the Elvis connection and you could get the price down to the reasonable amount if you asked. It was an oddity on the menu that everyone wanted to try at least once. It was crazy that it was more expensive than the lobster tail! Nick never did make the sandwich the same way it was made at Mine Company. It was originally made with blueberry jam and at Nick's it was made with strawberry jam. It also was made with sourdough bread at the Mine and Nick made it with Italian bread. I went to Nick's Cafe several times but never ate the Fool's Gold there but he would make it for Elvis events like when Cody Slaughter would come to perform in Lakewood so I ate it at those events.
