  • Note: I now have a full walkthrough of this game up for your viewing pleasure. If you want to see beyond the first few levels, go here: • Toy Story Action Game/...
    EDIT: Wow, I'm actually quite impressed how few are aware that this version of the game sucks. Seems like a lot of people know this version exists but very few have actually played it. That's just as well, considering it works on virtually no modern emulator (aside from PCem which is a pain in the rear to get working right).
    Because I needed to upload something, right?
    This is some old footage I had recorded forever ago, a bit of an abandoned project. So, for those of you who don't know, this is based on the SNES and Sega Genesis Toy Story game. You can find videos all over the place of those two, but this Windows 95 version? It's close to impossible. I think I've found two videos of this version, neither of which are very high quality. Though the reason for that isn't exactly hard to figure out -- this game is almost impossible to play on any modern computer. It doesn't run on modern Windows at all, which means you need to pull out a Windows 9x emulator, and most of the ones that play it...don't play it all that well. Which is exactly why I recorded this on a real computer running Windows 95.
    My original intent was to do a full playthrough of this, but that ended up not happening due to...stupid things that aren't important. I lost track of this project as a result and never finished it. I was originally going to keep going forward after I botched the gas station level, but eh, it is what it is. And since I don't know what else to upload at this point, here you go.
    So...on the topic of this version, how does it fare compared to the SNES and Genesis versions? Umm...it fares horribly. Where do I even start? The control on this version is awful, Woody's jumping is really "floaty" for starters. In the console versions it's fairly realistic, but here, his upward and downward speed are always constant, meaning he jumps in a triangle shape, not in a parabola. His pullstring also has a really strict hitbox, which makes bosses a nightmare and fighting enemies really annoying. And the RC levels are COMPLETELY AWFUL on this version. The turning is so sensitive that it's impossible to navigate anywhere; I promise my poor performance on that stage wasn't all my fault. I used to complain about the console versions of those levels, but now they hardly seem bad by comparison.
    Will I ever do a walkthrough of this game? I dunno, I wish I could, but me being at college doesn't exactly make that an easy task.
    Enjoy the video. This video mostly demonstrates up to the gas station level...if I ever get enough motivation I'll try to take another go at this. I don't remember if I played good or bad during this so I'll let you watch and judge for yourself.

This only shows the first half of the game, while my other one shows the entire game. If y'all want to see the rest of it, go here: ruclips.net/video/5Um1JCzdvgo/видео.html

    Imagine the Sega CD version of this game, it's basically the Genesis version but with CD-quality music from the PC game.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад +4

      Heh, I would have admired such an idea. I can see why it never happened though, considering that was an add-on that never really got popular enough (it wasn't a failure like some would have you believe though). They did make a version of Earthworm Jim for that add-on with CD music though, for what that's worth, though in that case they also gave it an extra level.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад

      That actually almost happened, I recorded the entire game...until I learned I had messed up the recording. It was a hard to spot error too, or I would have seen it in test recordings. Agh.
      But yeah, I've considered doing that numerous times.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад +3

      ...no. This version sucks. Believe me. Just because it has CD audio doesn't mean it's better.
      First off, I'd argue it actually looks WORSE. Not only are the graphics barely even up to snuff with the SNES version (and none of the dithering ironed out either, which is inexcusable considering home computers had better color depth than any console at the time), they removed several effects, like the 3D shelves and drawers. The animations are also much rougher in this version. And as the other guy said, the jumping is terrible and unrealistic. There's no acceleration of movement at all, you sort of just "float" into the air. Just look at the way Woody jumps off hooks in this version, it's really apparent just from that. And if that's not enough to turn you off from this version, the RC levels will be more than enough.
      If you've never actually played this version, believe me, if you ever do, you will take everything you said back. This version is obscure and deserves to be so.

    The frameright on the PC version doesn't seem as smooth as the SNES and Genesis version. Though then again it's probably because of the CPU PCs had back then.
    Also is it just me or do the stars sound a bit like the Gameboy Advance startup?

    • @MrEightThreeOne

      The jittery frame rate isn't really what I'd call excusable. This version of the game was released in 1996, and the absolute best processor you could get on the market at the time was a Pentium clocked at 200 MHz, but the average was in the 100-166MHz range. This was played on a Pentium II laptop from *1999* clocked at 366MHz; in fact, Windows 95 is considered *old* by this computer's standards, it's much more suited to running Windows 98! It's probably tied to the graphics chip more than anything, but I dunno, it plays Sonic and Knuckles Collection pretty smoothly which is a newer game so I don't really think it's that excusable under any of those circumstances.

      I would love to some day, and yeah, I totally get what you mean. I actually bought this game for the precise reason that it was grossly under-covered on RUclips, even if it's not a very good version. Although, a lot of that probably has to do with the fact that almost no emulator can play this game well.
      If I can ever find the drive and time to walkthrough the whole game, I absolutely will.

  • @shnick1990
    @shnick1990 7 лет назад +6

    After just beating the Genesis version and watching this video, I'm kind of dumbfounded that a port for the PS1 and the Saturn was never attempted. Imagine if it combined the higher quality audio from this version and the effort that was put into the Genesis version, I would've loved to have seen how that looked.
    Then again, the Genesis version by itself is still very impressive for its time (with its ability to display 3D imagery and still move at 60 FPS). It's pretty embarrassing that the PC port somehow ruined a game that the much weaker Genesis could handle just fine.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад +2

      It really is. Add to it that we've had much better Genesis-to-PC ports than this (Sonic CD, Earthworm Jim) and it really stands out as a lousy port. My only guess for why a PS1/Saturn port never happened is because those were probably seen as 3D consoles and they may have thought it would have been a bit odd for a game based on a CGI-animated movie that still used predominantly 2D visuals would look out of place on such a console. It's just my guess though.

    • @shnick1990
      @shnick1990 7 лет назад

      Mr. Eight-Three-One I guess that's possible, but around the time the SNES and Genesis versions came out, there were plenty of 2D and so-called 2.5D games coming out on the PS1 and Saturn (examples including Rayman and Gex). So I don't think it would've truly been out of place for the game to release on those platforms, especially when 3D games were still kind of in their infancy at the time.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад

      Yeah, but it was based on a property that revolutionized computer animation as we know it today. I'm just saying I think people would have expected something 3D when it's Toy Story we're talking about, but it wasn't out of place on the predominantly 2D SNES and Genesis. The other thing that makes me say such is that the video game adaptation of Toy Story 2 eventually *was* released on the PS1 which indeed was a 3D platformer. Now, I could be wrong, but that's my theory anyway.
      The PC would also make sense considering that PCs had yet to see the 3D boom happen there as well (though the 3DFX Voodoo graphics card did come out a few months after this game. Hmmm...). Other Toy Story PC games like Activity Center and Animated Storybook were a bit more "cinematic" (in fact, Pixar themselves even did the animation for them!) though aimed at younger kids.

    • @shnick1990
      @shnick1990 7 лет назад +1

      I suppose that is true, even though the Toy Story 2 game came out when 3D platformers were more mainstream, whereas they were barely (if even) established when the original came out. Then again, Mario 64 and Crash were on the horizon, so it's entirely possible that people did expect more out the new generation.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад +1

      Outside of emulators, I don't believe so. I have gotten it to successfully play on PCem, for what that's worth.
      If it's for any reason besides nostalgia though...don't play this version. The music is the only good thing about it. Everything else about this version is horrible. If you really want to experience this game properly, emulate the Genesis or the SNES versions, they're miles better than this one.

    • @OldClassicGamer
      @OldClassicGamer 7 лет назад

      From what I heared, all versions are same except that PC version is missing one level. What makes PC version horrible aside from missing level?

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад +1

      Hah. HAHAHAHAHA. Someone who told you that probably never actually played the PC version and just assumed that.
      I went over all of this in the description, but to sum it up...the controls are awful in this version, Woody has terribly unrealistic jumping, the graphics are watered down (such as how the 3D effects are gone), there are no bonus games, Woody's pullstring has a very strict hitbox that makes hitting enemies a giant pain, and the RC levels are near unplayable because the steering is stupidly sensitive. Read the description for more detail.
      You're going to have a ball just being able to play this version at all on a modern PC, and for how crappy it is, it's just not worth the effort.

      ...space issues? Are they for real?
      Dude, this game was put on a 650MB CD, where the SNES and Genesis versions could only store a few megabytes *at most.* If it was really that big an issue, they could have maybe cut one of the music tracks and just reused one for another level. And looking at the size of my disc image, they still had about 8MB to spare of space anyway, which is more space than a Genesis cartridge can even *hold.* I get the idea that they just didn't care enough to try putting it in, considering how poorly done this entire version is as a whole.

      I love how many people keep saying things like this, and my response is always "No, that version would actually be good if that existed".

    Anyone have the link to an ISO? Because I want to get this for my Windows 95 VM. And I'd really appreciate it if someone has an ISO of Toy Story 2 for PC

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  6 лет назад

      ...uh, no, because ISOs don't even support CD audio tracks in the first place?
      Also, don't play this version. It's terrible.

    • @CorporalPig22
      @CorporalPig22 6 лет назад

      For one, what do you mean it's terrible?
      Two, I actually played it and skipped the Claw level, which I gotta say is a freaking ragefest if you ask me

    For some reason, the animations are a little bit slow, or not well. ⏱

    • @MrEightThreeOne

      It's not just you. The animations are indeed quite a bit rougher than they are on the consoles.

    Proof that shitty PC ports is not a new thing

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  6 лет назад +1

      Oh gosh, that's FAR from a new thing. Terrible ports have been around pretty much as long as video games have. Take a look at any console port of Doom; pretty much all of them are worse than the PC version in some way. A lot of NES games also had horrible PC ports too; know of TMNT for the NES? Yeah, that got a PC port that was also terrible. In fact, you couldn't even finish it without cheating -- a design oversight made it impossible to go past a certain area in the sewers. There were plenty of other terrible PC ports of earlier games as well.
      This one is incredibly inexcusable to me though because we also had Sonic CD and Earthworm Jim on Windows 95, and both of them were miles better than this port. It boggles my mind how little care was put into this port.

    • @Cade_The_Squirrel
      @Cade_The_Squirrel 6 лет назад

      Disney usually had fairly decent PC ports, clearly one of the best Disney games on console wasn't good enough to give a shit about when porting it, the Mega Drive port really is the best version, if anything for the extra levels

    Well this is what I call a way to not recycle an exaggerated hard Toy Story game.
    Seriously, it could be better if they makes the gameplay more fluid, but it seems that the game is just made by laziness. What a disappointment.
    And I thought that the SNES version was the laziest version.

    how did you have music in this game? mine dont have

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  7 лет назад

      This could be caused by any number of things.
      * Did you download an ISO of the game? If so, that's the problem. The ISO format doesn't support CD audio.
      * Which emulator are you using, if you're using one at all? If it's DOSBox + Windows 95, I've never been able to get CD audio to work on there.
      * If it's an old computer, I don't know what it could be. It could be any number of things.

    I imagined the psx has all levels and new one which is command and conquer toys in this one you need to put Sid's toys to did if you do that he gets surrounded and got scared of woody saying "so play nice" with limps but Saturn version I think it will get murdered with half of animation, stiff controlls and poor frame rate

    • @bangerbangerbro
      @bangerbangerbro 6 лет назад

      Maxim Ukhin Saturn version would probably be better actually. 2D games tend to better on Saturn than PlayStation. Take Rayman for example. I think the Saturn street fighter ports are also considered by most to be better than their PlayStation counterparts.

    • @maximukhin45
      @maximukhin45 6 лет назад

      so what maybe 2d games are better on saturn but NOT real life 2d games for example mortal kombat 2 on saturn considered to be the worst version of the best mortal kombat game ever made or even wwf games you know 2d games that look realistic don't work well on saturn cause it needs to have a lot of memory like any of those spetacular visuals and update needs a better hardware and thats where playstation's at

    • @bangerbangerbro
      @bangerbangerbro 6 лет назад

      Maxim Ukhin So by "real life" you mean using photos? It doesn't make any difference. They're just images. You might want more frames for smoother animation, but even then, the Saturn has more memory than the PlayStation.

    • @maximukhin45
      @maximukhin45 6 лет назад

      let me tell you what i actually ment digitised 2d games on saturn do NOT work well have you seen mortal kombat 2 on saturn or wwf games they do not work well on saturn cause it uses big use of memory to make it work and what happens half of animation and poor framerate with crippling amout of slowdown and atop of all that most people owned playstation than they do the saturn so they do not want to play a crappy port of a playstation game so it's bloody obvious playstation is better overall

    • @bangerbangerbro
      @bangerbangerbro 6 лет назад

      Maxim Ukhin As I said before, the Saturn has more memory. Your argument is invalid. Anyway, this uses CGI not photos, as if that makes any difference.
