  • St. Eugene's Cathedral is located on a site bounded by Francis Street, Great James Street, Windsor Terrace and Creggan Street in Derry City. It is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Diocese of Derry. The site for St. Eugene's Cathedral was purchased in 1849. The foundation stone for the Cathedral was was laid on 26th July 1851. It solemnly opened for worship by Bishop Francis Kelly on 4th May 1873. It was designed by James Joseph McCarthy in neo-gothic style. The spire was built onto St. Eugene's Cathedral between 1900 and 1903. The 10 bells in St. Eugene's Cathedral rang for the first time on Christmas Eve 1902. St. Eugene's Cathedral was solemnly consecrated on 21st April 1936 by Bishop Bernard O’Kane after the debt for the Construction of the Cathedral was cleared. The Sanctuary was reorganised in 1975 to bring in in line with the changes of Vatican II. Both the exterior and interior of the Cathedral underwent major renovations between 1985 and 1989. St. Eugene's Cathedral was solemnly reopened on Sunday, 17th December 1989, and was carried out by Bishop Edward Daly. The most recent renovations since then took place in 2015. In 2023 a shrine to Blessed Carlos Acutis was installed in this Cathedral. St. Eugene's Cathedral is the Parish Church of Templemore Parish as well as being the Cathedral of the Diocese of Derry.
