  • Once a structural model (VBM) has been created there are only a few steps required to produce a Depogrid. It's something I'd like to do as part of the interpretation workshop that I run but the compute times are a little long.
Here I show the steps involved and the results of each step and skip all the compute downtime.
Thanks go out to Leigh Truelove from Schlumberger who helped get me up the curve on this when it was introduced a couple of years ago.

Thanks for sharing the steps. Can you upload a larger explanation, step by step of building a model with Depogrid? For example the setings for the horizons before the depospace. Thanks again.

The horizon parameters (Fault and Horizon truncation relationships etc.) an are carried over from the Volume Based Modelling. The Depogrid settings are as straightforward as I describe at about 3.00 in the video. Learning how to build a comprehensive VBM is more involve but is covered in my training course, an introduction to which is covered in another video on my channel.

How long does it take to model this seismic data using depospace/depogrid? is it longer than pillar gridding?

From the seismic interpretation you need to make a VBM first. For this small dataset (with~50 faults) this takes less than a day. The Depospace and Depogrid runs took less than 2 hours each after that. Pillar gridding this dataset would be much more hands on and take considerably longer. To include all the faults, I think the best part of a week.

Excuse me sir.. i wanna do the depogrid modelling but my petrel didn’t have a depogrid tools.. Still use the 2017 one,, am i have u upgrades to the 2018 or above? Or may be there are some plugging to have that tools ?

Depogrid was introduced in Petrel 2019. It is underpinned by a complete rewrite of VBM.

Hello, I had a 3D model that someone built in the past which I think had been through a depospace calculation, then was done facies model at. But now it is no longer a structural model so I can't find the choice of whether to view it as a depospace or geospace anywhere in the model, instead it has [U] (for upscale) and [D] behind the property name ("Facies [U] [D]" for example). Is there by any chance a way I could display the facies model in depospace? Thank you

I'm not in the best position to comment on that as I am not a geomodeller. There should be a VBM attached to the project and the associated Geospace and Depospace views will reside in the Strucutral Model part of the tree. If you don't have that, you won't be able to access the Depospace view.

@@ThirdiGeo yeah there is a structural model but I can't seem to attach the properties to it. Thank you so much for the answer anyway! 😊

@@immawish One possibility is that the model was built on Petrel 2017 or older and you are using Petrel 2019/20. The VBM is completely different and the old models can be displayed but not manipulated. I found this on my training course recently. I could display the model results but could not even open the fault framework. Luckily it was a simple model and I built a new one in 30 minutes.
