It is a beautiful piece of wood, and the simple elegance of a pure wood project is often overlooked. A master such as yourself doesn't need resin or inlays to make something functional and aesthetically pleasing. I love the resin and inlays too, but you don't need them as a crutch to catch the eye.
The mortar and pestal is lovely and the wood has really great grain and it is wonderful colour. Cheryl will be really pleased with it. The mineral oil really brings the grain out. Amanda xx
Awe maaan! You tricked me into thinking this was Thursday already! But I still loved the bonus! Beautiful piece, non-shiny finish and all. Now my wife has a longer list of projects for me - I just need to find me some burl! Thanks Jim!
That is a beautiful mortar and pestle set. I bought a General Lathe at an estate sell and I love it. I'm left handed and I never realized how much more control I have on the outboard side. Also, I can do much larger turnings.
Wow that is an absolute gorgeous! The Maple Burl was such great choice for this mortar and pestle. I’m sure Cheryl will be very pleased! Thanks for the bonus content, Jim
Nice piece, Jim. When I make a mortar and pestle after 2-3 coats of mineral oil, I use Ack's restoring polish (which is mineral oil, bees wax and carnuba wax) to add a final glossier coat. All components are food safe but also need replenishment periodically.
The grain is spectacular Jim. Nice piece of wood. Yes the mineral oil finish will have to be applied every time the bowl is washed. Take care and stay safe.
Thanks for the bonus video this week Jim. My daughter has been at me to make this for a while now so once I'm able to turn again it may be one of the first things done. As always, a pleasure to watch your turning and tips. Cheers
This was a beautiful project and the wood makes much more sense than the marble one I had which was so slick it was mostly unusable. This will be a piece of kitchen art. Great job!!
A lovely surprise to see this extra video today. That's a beautiful pestle and mortar- I've only seen them in stone or marble before, so that is an education for me! Look forward to seeing the next little project. Thanks Jim
Beautiful, love the mortar and pestle. I happen to have a wooden set also, and like it better than the stone versions. She will be really happy with this indeed!
I'm glad you mentioned how dense this burl is. I, a compete wood neophyte, was worried it might not stand up to a mortal and pestle pounding. Beautiful work, as always! I found this channel maybe a week ago, and have watched a huge number of videos. No plans on becoming a wood turner myself, but I've always found it fascinating, and your videos in particular are weirdly relaxing (in a good way LOL). Thank you for all the wonderful content!
Thank you for this, I've been very interested in turning out some motor and pestles on my midi lathe for some time now. You have made this look easy. 🤩
Oh goodness. Now that's a Beautiful Bowl and Pestle. That is so neat that you made this from a Maple Burl. It is a nice thick bowl perfect for its upcoming job. The pestle is nice that your client can use either end. I like the finish using mineral oil. Perfect. Thanks for another great video.
What a gorgeous mortar and pestle set! Id love to have a set like this. The grain in the wood was very showy and just helps make this set all the more beautiful! Thank you Jim!
What a beautiful piece. I absolutely love to see traditional woodworking. I find it hard to find a good wood mortar and pestle. I am sure that Cheryl will love it.
Oh, that is a natural beauty. The design of the pestle is awesome, dual functionality! 😎
It really is! Thanks
Beautiful wood. Very handy item to have. Good job.
