LYRICS
There was a decorated general with a heart of gold
That likened him to all the stories he told
Of past battles won and lost and legends of old
A seasoned veteran in his own time
On the battlefield he gained respectful fame
With many metals of bravery and stripes to his name
He grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face
And always urged his men on
But on the eve of a great battle with the infantry in dream
The old general tossed in his sleep and wrestled with its meaning
He awoke from the night just to tell what he had seen
And walked slowly out of his tent
All the men held tall with their chests in the air
With courage in their blood and a fire in their stare
It was a grey morning and they all wondered how they would fare
Til the old general told them to go home
I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting
I have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I'm going
Take a shower shine your shoes you got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Go now you are forgiven
But the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders
Not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders
The general said he would do his own duty bout would not extend it not further
The men could go as they pleased
Not a man moved their eyes glazed straight ahead
Til one by one they stepped back and not a word was said
And the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head
He then prepared to fight
I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting
I have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I'm going
Take a shower shine your shoes you got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Go now you are forgiven
Ya got to be got to got be to got to be hey

2022 NEEDS MORE DISPATCH! This world is crazy and this music moves people in a way we need desperately these days!
MORE DISPATCH!!!
This song is world peace .
I still remember this show like it was yesterday. So glad to have traveled there before the plandemic. Life was good then. It will again be.
I love seeing all the different generations in the crowd. This is music that everybody can get behind.
Saw them for the first time in Nashville earlier this month Opening for O.A.R. Unfortunately OAR couldn't perform because of severe weather (amphitheater) But Dispatch was amazing. Never listened to them before but now I love it. Music has great power.
That’s gotta make you feel good people singing your song where you don’t even have to ha
I went to this concert, because my favorite band was opening. I knew next to nothing about Dispatch, but hearing this song live and singing it with an entire outdoor amphitheater of people was incredible! I'll never forget that moment.
Record company is your favorite band? Awesome. We farm from NJ to see this show. Love both bands. A most place to see a concert. Red Rocks is amazing
World peace
If the conscripted youth could just be forgiven. Let everyone leave Nd no one fights
This is amazing, I miss Pete...
Wait what happened to him also who is he lol sorry just learned about this ban
@@eastboundorc-5473 Pete Francis he's the original bass player, he also played guitar on some tracks, he's not been touring with the band since 2017 i believe as he's suffering from depression mostly from being away from his family for the tours, theu said that when he says he's ready to come back his spot will be waiting for him.
Rock on!
Woo
Thank you for your awesome music!
The General: "Take a shower and shine your shoes"
Men: "Uhhh sir, we don't have showers"
The General: "Ok, just shine your shoes then"
Men: "We don't have that either..."
The General: "Well just go jump in a river then"
whoa, that's Matt from RX Bandits on Bass, is he in Dispatch now?
Sure is!
For over 20 years now I've wondered where this song's lyrics come from. I always imagined it was an obscure poem about, (or possibly even from) the American Civil War. But that's based on absolutely nothing.
That drummer got his t shirts wish 😅

The General with the heart of gold was Confederate General Lee according to the song writer. His statue is being torn down everywhere in the country this year.
Guess he wasn't forgiven .. :-(
No more brother wars
Yup, and in this song, that General told his men to go home. In real life, things went differently, and that's why that treasonous racist doesn't have statues anymore.
@@djbreas But General Lee wasn't a racist. And didn't own slaves. Was torn between fighting between the North and the South but felt obligated to join the South as a Virginian. But your not very intelligent so ...
@@oldrocker1970 he straight up did own slaves. He also helped quash slave rebellions before Virginia even ceded from the union.
