In episode 654 of Cut The Clutter, Shekhar Gupta begins with a riddle, about a country whose native population is just over 3 lakhs but whose GDP is $360 billion. The United States' largest air force base in Middle-East is based in this country, which also shares ownership of the world’s largest gas field with Iran. Its neighbours lift a three-year blockade on it. Why have they done so now, and what does it mean for the world?

Just to let you know that I am reading your newsletter's articles everyday and loving them.Beside the supplementary articles of WSJ, Washington Post etc attached in the newsletter are icing on the cake .I was not aware that there are so many good reading content in The Print. It's best n comprehensive form of news source for me. But one small suggestion I have. If you can do away the ads banners in the articles for paid subscribers, then the news reading experience will further increase.

Jazeera has the extreme financial backing of the Qatar finance ministry. Those who watch football eagerly understand how recklessly Qataris have pushed in the oil money. Shekhar Gupta missed Paris Saint Germain that is owned by Qatar's Sheikh. He basically owns it on behalf of the Qatar Sports ministry. PSG might be the first and only sports team owned by a ministry of a government. That's why they always have money to make corrupt moves.
On the other hand, WION doesn't have any such financial backing. If any of the Indian media houses backed it in a model similar to Bloomberg in USA, WION could Jazeera a new ass.

    Dear SG Uncle,
You made a huge blunder at 8:04 and it would be great if you could issue correction to it.
At 8:04 you mentioned that four countries turned against Qatar "aggressively", namely KSA, UAE, Bahrain, and Oman. However, Oman from the beginning was not part of this blockade. Oman is known for his neutrality and Oman upheld the same during this blockade. During the period of blockade Oman maintained normal relation with Qatar and tried mediating along with Kuwait. Fun fact, when air travel between UAE and Qatar was blocked, the most common route for travel from UAE to Qatar was via Oman. Qatar airways and Oman air increased scheduled flights many-folds to cope up with demand. During the blockade period Qatar destined goods flowed thorough Omani ports.
Source: Any news article when blockade started, and official statements from Oman.
Also, on additional note for 12:10, first non-Gulf country to step up in support of Qatar was Turkey. To the extend, they fast tracked the bill to allow deployment of Turkish troops to Turkish military base in Qatar. Before blockade, Qatar was fully dependent on KSA for their groceries supply. After blockade, Turkish goods flooded Qatari supermarkets. Those goods were supplied via Iran as a part of tripartite agreement between Qatar, Iran and Turkey.
Source: News articles and personal stories from friends in Qatar who were in Qatar during blockade.

@Shekar Gupta, You have a factual error in what you said. Oman and Kuwait have stayed neutral in this dispute. In fact Oman has been extra friendly with Qatar, during these difficult three years and the trade with Oman increased to compensate for some of loss of Qarar's trade with the boycotting countries! Oman is probably the only country that has friends across the world.

This is exactly why I don't take Al Jazeera seriously.
Because although they themselves champion liberalism,
But their owners, i.e., the Qatari government, does the exact opposite inside their own country.

It's not like there is no liberalism in the country of qatar, a population of only a million natives, all of them are rich and extremely funded by govt. All Qatari enjoy high luxurious life. They are not bounded by any strict law, only migrant labours are controlled by laws. Qatar is good to it's own native people and controls the migrants that's it and I think it is normal.

My statement merely speaks about the journalism standards of Aljazeera. The problem here is that you are letting your Modi-hatred triumph your reasoning.
