The people claiming that the older editions of the game have too much "baggage" are bringing more baggage to the game than anyone else.

By and large, the most loved campaign book is the incredibly dark, Curse of Strahd. That should have been enough to show what the actual majority of people think about having dark things in D&D.

    You nailed it.
The power of storytelling to teach right & wrong is why this hobby is under assault by those that want to stop that kind of instruction.
    They want a demoralized population.
These are just games. It’s just a hobby. And yet, at the same time it’s not. It’s a part of the culture. An essential part.

The changes were trickling in after Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes with the 'rainbow' tieflings, but the floodgates really opened with Tasha's. After that there was a strong and concerted effort to change 5th from release to it's state now.

@@thepickleddragon8590 Me too! In fact, I only own one post-Tasha's book because it's had the least damage from Tasha's, Van Richten's. And no, I don't own Tasha's.

The people claiming "problematic language" will cause people to act badly are likely also the people who will argue that violent video games _don't_ make people violent. In other words... hypocrites.

If someone has a panic attack and clutches their pearls at the mention of words like slavery or civilization, they are welcome to find another table. I don't have the time, training, nor inclination to be their therapist, and they obviously need one.

Not active anymore. I'm an old white guy, so good players become heroes fighting true villains.

Vault of the Drow hints flavourfully at the unabashed viciousness, madness and pervery of Drow society. The old Dragon special on the Drow expanded on this vividly and well. Erelhei Cinlu's populace wasn't just uncongenial - it was casually, ecstatically murderous. I haven't played BG3 yet, but from clips and from reading about the game the Drow NPC character seems rather muted and flavourless when set beside her 'forebears'. Why can't she be flat-out vile, shocking and dangerous, instead of just prone to having uncongenial views?
I'm a UK Labour Party supporter, and I'm fine with racial ability score penalties and profession restrictions because (a) I know the difference between a game and real life, and (b) a dwarf wizard feels stupid.

I am still baffled by all the people who want to drag real life problems into games. Its why I banned political discussions from my table.

@@thepickleddragon8590 It's regrettable but understandable that you have to do this - people are losing the capacity to go easy on things, and to not feel the need to make a stand in every hill. It's getting harder for some to not go looking for points of contention, to not regard setbacks or differences of opinion as personal attacks.
I haven't played for years, other than electronically. Are some people using their characters as extensions of themselves now, in which they can express aspects of their own identity in the game? That's asking for trouble
One of my ideas of a bad time would be to be in a 5E group where all the characters are cats and robots and the grandkids of devils/dragons/snakes, and we're all off to whimsical hazard-free magic barista school, and the other players are arch identity-wielders who are prone to being made to feel unsafe by this and that. I could say something about hair colour, but that'd be to lurch into the cliche swamp. Still...

if you wanna use the rules from Tashas, you essentially have to agree that other NPCs with your tashased build exist. for example, mountain dwarf wizard who reassigns the Str bonus to Int? you must accept you are not the only mountain dwarf who did that, and that enemy mountain dwarves may do that against you too.

The more WOTC sanitizes the new D&D releases, the more taboo the older releases will become and we all know people are more drawn to what there told not to read, watch, play or do.

The lorevin Dungoens and Dragons are themes we see over and over again in history. If you find some of the language "problimatic" you shouldn't look at history or leave your safe bubble.

Maybe the sales were better because fans of prior eruptions decided to at least give the new edition a try. After seeing I preferred the 3.5 and Pathfinder, I stopped supporting 5E after buying 2 books. I did later buy a third book because I wanted to support the Eberron campaign setting.
