Wait, I have a question. I am new to welding and I have not buy any tanks yet but can I use a helium tank? I think you answered this question in some way but more specifically I am referring to those used at party rentals.
Yes, as long as it is a large high pressure tank and not the little pink helium tanks that are sold to the public for parties. Just make sure that your local welding supply will exchange a helium tank for a argon or argon/Co2 mix tank before you go buying one. I don’t want you getting stuck with one. 👍😊
Thanks! I agree! I have received a lot of comments from viewers who have used this info and made some extra money and that is really why I put this info out there. Hope this info helps you as well! Thank you for your kind comment.🙏😊
Fabulous Info. You are a generous man for sharing your "hustle" strategy!!! I've already bought and sold several tanks, and well on my way to a set of "Free" tanks for my MIG/TIG welder.
Thank you my brother! It brings me great joy to hear from people like you who can take information and implement it and make some money! I’m a deep believer in karma and what we put out into this world we get back in so many wonderful ways. Thank you for your kind gift through your super thanks donation. Certainly not expected but greatly appreciated. Peace and love to you my friend! 🙏❤️😊
Thank you for your tips, I found 5 tanks today! 4 need valves but I paid 150 for 4 and 45 for another ready to go! They are the big tall rental types that they typically don’t sell.
Hi George! Wow, those are great deals! Sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier today, I was gone welding all day. It looks like you can get the valves on Amazon for $22 plus shipping.www.amazon.com/Sherwood-CGA580-Inert-Cylinder-Valve/dp/B01H0G47WS/ref=sr_1_3?crid=HSVCWI62695S&keywords=580+inert+gas+valve&qid=1680394621&sprefix=580+inert+gas+valve%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-3 😁👍
Dude! This Didn't cross my mind until I watched your vid yesterday 19May2021. I looked everywhere and as I was realizing "Everyone is On To The Secret" , "As A Last Resort" I checked Fb (I hate Fb and Refuse to even look at crap on there!) found a 300cf "Nitrogen Tank" for $50. Just went and Snatched it up today. Gave $70 since he included the bottle cart! Thank You! Got this to exchange for 100% Argon for myself but will Now be Actively Hunting for these ! Don't worry, I'm in KS so won't be edging in on your territory!
Hey, that’s a smokin’ deal! Good for you! I’m always glad when someone posts up a comment about a great deal they got after watching this video! Thanks for sharing your success story. 👍😊 Don
This is the best welding, Tank video, I've seen, very well done. I live in Florida, wondering if you ever had any luck with scuba tanks, there are a lot of those on offer pretty cheap.
Thank you! I really appreciate your kind words!🙏😊 I haven’t had any luck with scuba tanks. I have looked at them and there are a lot available here as well. The tanks need to be something that the welding supply uses. They just don’t know what to do with the scuba tanks so I just leave them alone. 👍
Great video but a word of warning for others before you go running out and buying tanks is to call your local gas suppliers FIRST to make sure they'll accept exchanging a tank from a different type of gas. I had found two 281 CF oxygen tanks on my local CL for $100 each and was about to pick them up but then called up the gas suppliers first before buying. Everyone I talked to said they would only do an even cylinder swap for a cyclinder with the same gas valve. This is the Bay Area of Northern California. I'm jealous of people living in areas where the gas companies are more chill about the exchanges. My local Airgas store just quoted me ~$800 for a 125 CF bottle of Argon if I did not have a bottle to bring in for exchange!
Hi Kevin! Well that is a real bummer! Here in Tucson, the dealers are so short on tanks that all they care about is the steel. Airgas told me the other day that they are only exchanging tanks now and aren’t selling any more tanks because they only have a supply enough for exchanging. The will order a tank for customers but it will be about A year and a half to get one. They have over 3500 tanks on order right now.☹️
I still see deals here in town. You just have to search regularly and have the cash ready to buy right when something pops up. The most common tanks here in town are old oxygen tanks. Mathesons on Grant Road is the best place to exchange tanks. Good luck on the search.😊👍
Maaan you’ve just set me up for a goldmine. I don’t how many times I’ve seen these tanks free and never gave it a second thought. Now I’ll never make that mistake any more. Like that at the end of the video you gave a little info on the tank markings that’s very helpful, plus I didn’t know you could put different gases in any tank. I thought they were tank specific that too is an eye opening moment for me. Tank hunting now lol
Hey, glad I could help! I get one to two tanks a month off Craigslist or OfferUp. It makes a nice little side hustle! Good luck with your tank hunting!👍😀Don
Something you didn't mention is leased tanks. A lot of the tanks you find around are property of a company and are NOT abandoned. These tanks will NOT be accepted by a shop to be exchanged or filled unless you have the lease papers. The tanks are usually stolen. Most leased tanks have the name of the lease company stamped on the collar right below the valve. Steer clear of leased tanks since you can be charged with possession of stolen property.
@@earthstewardude Not BS at all! I have a neighbor that runs a welding supply store and he gets people all the time trying to get cash for stolen tanks. Some are simply lost tanks but the cops don't distinguish. "But officer, I just found that bag of money on the side of the road! It can't be stolen!"
That's correct! I get most of my gas tanks from widows. I have come across so many tanks with company names that are long out of business! I have 3 companies here that will exchange with me because they know I'm a straight up guy who finds them from the widows or kids of dead guys.
Hi, Amazing video, Quick question, where, and how do you sell the tanks? I have found a couple deals in my area, I just want to make sure I can sell them and they don't collect dust in my garage. Thanks
Yes, any of the high pressure gases. Well, at least here in Arizona. Some other states apparently have different rules about exchanging tanks only for the same gas. 🤷♂️
My local welding shop said they arent as concerned about a tank needing to be hydro'd but newer DOT requirements specify a tank can't be refilled anymore if the PSI number is under 2000. Does anyone know what to look for on the tank?
Yes, most modern tanks have a DOT stamp on them and the last 4 digits is the test pressure rating for the tank. Most of the tanks I find are 2200-2400psi ratings. Hope this helps!😁👍
the oxygen and acetylene tanks may be considered the same for purposes of buying and selling empty tanks but they are certainly not the same inside acetylene has acetone and a porous mass inside the cylinder, oxygen tanks have no such stuff, hence you also can't fill an oxygen tank with acetylene or vice versa
Hi Larry! Yes, you are absolutely correct on all points! Acetylene is a low pressure tank and has much thinner steel so I generally stay away from them because most shops will only exchange a high pressure tank for another high pressure tank. At least that is the case here in Tucson. 😊👍
I’ve been doing this since I saw your video but today I was asked by praxair if I had a hazmat certificate. Don’t think I’ve been going to be doing it but your video helped me made some extra cash. Thanks
Hi Luis! I’m glad you’ve been successful with this! I would not stop just because Praxair asked for a hazmat cert. You only need a Hazmat certification if you are a commercial company. Those laws don’t apply to your average citizen. You are allowed by federal law to transport your tanks and exchange them without any hazmat certification. Don’t let the man keep you down my brother! It is your right to make some extra money this way and they can’t prevent you. 😁👍
@@PranaTech hey, thanks for replying, I talk to a couple other suppliers here in town and they we’re actually pretty nice about it and they explain me that whatever i do with the tanks is none of their business as longest I keep buying from them they will exchange my tanks. Man I appreciate you for making this video, this has been a fun thing to do on my days off
Yes, they are decommissioned tanks and are sold out into the public domain to become part of the inventory that is out there. They are some of the highest quality tanks that I have come across. 😊👍
Hi Tanner! Yes, Mathesons on Grant Rd. Just west of Oracle Rd. They have the best price on exchange and for an out of date tank they usually only charge $15 😊👍
Hi, really great full for the informative video, I just purchased a some used equipment, it came with a full size 100% Argon , tank says oil free, it gray with no markings or label on it. Any info on possibly getting it excepted?
Hi Shannon, I would just take it in and exchange it with confidence. At this point you own it so I would just bring it in to the local shop and act like you do it all the time.😁👍
The problem is fighting with a big gas company to even take that tank for fill-up and not try to get you to take their own on a lease. All I have close in my area is Airgas and nexAIR, and from what I understand, they make it such a pain in the balls to fill up a customer-owned tank (125cu or more) that it almost forces you to rent their tanks just to avoid the hassle. There really aren't any small local welding shops in my area anymore, and if there were, they were bought up by Airgas. Otherwise, this is an awesome way to save on bottles as long as you can verify the DOT stamp and inspection date.
Well that stinks! Here in Tucson the competition is pretty widespread and we have enough smaller companies that they can’t pull that crap. Airgas tries to charge $50 for a tank that is out of hydro test and so they lose a lot of business because of this. The smaller companies only charge $10-$15 dollars when you exchange a tank out of hydro. Airgas definitely has the worst reputation here in town.
Hi Joseph, here in Tucson it is a crapshoot. If the company on the ring is still in business, they won’t take it in trade. I’ve gotten to the point now that I just call them before I purchase the tank and make sure that they will take it in trade. 😊👍
It seems like the 50CF-125CF size tanks sell easier than the larger 200 CF+ tanks? Curious what categories you list them in when you sell... "Tools" or "Business" or "General" ?
Hi there! Yes sometimes the smaller ones do sell faster. It does seem to depend on the types that are looking at the time I list though. The DIY garage guys tend to prefer the smaller tanks and the more serious guys tend to want the larger tanks. I sold two large tanks to a guy a month ago and was wishing I had more. I usually list in tools but it seems most people find them by search terms rather than categories of listing. 😊👍
I live in Sahuarita. I buy my gas from consolidated welding supply. Would love to find a larger tank. Can't afford nearly $300 to go from my 35# tank to an 80#...
Hi Dan, I’ve had my best pricing through Matheson’s welding supply at Grant and I-10. They will take your smaller tank in trade and I’ve even traded two smaller tanks for the equivalent larger one through them. So I don’t always go for the full size tanks. If I can find a couple of the smaller tanks for $40-$50 then I just trade those for a larger one. Since making this video, the competition here in town has gotten higher. I know of a couple guys doing what I was doing and I’m sure my video was watched by a few here in town.😊
I built my house from Rastra blocks. I am intrigued by your air Crete videos. Need to learn more about it. I would like to build a workshop using it if possible.
I’ve had a terrible time getting anyone to approve anything to do with Aircrete. No engineer anywhere will stamp plans for any home built Aircrete blocks. Without an engineer’s stamp, Pima county won’t even consider alternative building designs. ☹️ There is a couple on RUclips down by you that are building an Aircrete house, but it is in Santa Cruz county and they have a built without code allowance type permit. I am going to build a workshop as well and now I’m looking at just building it out of Rasta or ICF.
I purchased a R tank for 5$ sold it for 50!! Because of you. Also what would I price the tanks at for the different sizes? Should I exchange them to argon mix like you or just sell them how they are
Hi Nate! That is awesome! Glad to see others making some money too💰😁👍 I’ve had the best luck exchanging them for Mig welding mix. 75/25 argon/co2. When I’m exchanging the tank at the dealer, I ask them what their price is for the same tank. I then price it about 20-25% lower so people will want to buy mine rather then the dealer. Have fun my friend and make lots of money! Peace✌️😊
Hi Gene! Normally I don’t paint them but occasionally if they look too rough and I think they might reject it, then I would paint it and make it look newer. 👍😁
@@PranaTech BTW.... I just picked up my 1st Helium tank for 50 bucks from a second-hand store! Thankful for your help and the sharing of information buddy!
Hi Shane, some of the shops in my area here in Tucson allow me to trade multiple tanks in for a larger tank. I would call the shops in your area and see if they will exchange medical oxygen tanks for a welding tank. If yes, then you are in business! 👍😁
Thanks for the great vid on tanks. I'm going to look at a couple of big tanks that have set in my barn for years; they are about twice the size of H tanks and have a standard fitting as well as screw on valve protectors. maybe old propane tanks?? any way if usable I'm not sure I can afford to have one hydro and filled wonder if they can be used for a turn in.
Hi Don! If you want to know for sure, take a picture of the tank and the valve and run down to your welding supply and ask them if they will exchange them. That’s what I do before I purchase if the tank is questionable.😊👍
Hi! I’m down in green valley. What shops have you found are best to work with for accepting tanks on trade in? And charging hood prices for hydro testing if needed. Looking for another cylinder for my tig setup.
Hi Nathan! Ok, the best I’ve found lately is Mathesons for the best pricing on fills and if you get a tank that needs hydro, they only charge $15. They are just east of I-10 at the Grant road exit. They are on the right just before you get to Oracle Rd. 😁👍
Are you interested in making another video possibly elaborate on the testing hydrostatic what is a star 5 years a plus sign and a star is that 10 years what is just a plus sign
Hi Max. I answered this in the other comment but I will post it again just in case someone is looking for this info. The star means it is a 10 year hydrostatic test date. The plus just means it can be overfilled by 10%. Hope this helps! 👍😊
Hi Barry, I just filled one up this past week and I was paying around $50 for a 250cf tank, but this last tank cost me $69 out the door! That is nuts!😳
If it’s a K size tank with 250 cf, I sell those with mig gas full for $325 and they always sell fast here in Tucson. Usually within 3 days. It might be worth more where you are!👍😊
Hi Kyle, no one has ever asked me for any paperwork on any tank. Do beware of tanks that have a company name on the ring around the top. Those are usually leased tanks and companies won’t exchange them.👍
Hi there, I believe it will work because they are rated to 300 psi. You would just need to drain it and flush it clean before welding on it so you don’t shorten your lifespan.😊👍
Hello Tech, Question: I just want to make sure, I have a tank that I got it for free from local a coffee shop that they are going out of business they are use it for filling drinking sodas 🥤 I can feel it like half full in the tank. Is this kind of tank is good enough to use it for welding gas? Should I empty or cleaning the tank first? Thanks in advance.
Good morning Sar! That is great that you got your tank for free! I am going to assume that it is a CO2 tank since you said that they were using it for sodas. If it is CO2 then it will work great for Mig welding just as it is. You will need to get a specific regulator designed for CO2 tanks and welding. There are a lot of CO2 regulators that are made for growing or soda dispensers that don’t have accurate flow meters for welding. Have fun and let me know if you have any other questions. 😊🙏Don
Hi Robert! No it can’t unfortunately. Acetylene is a very special tank and is filled with balsa wood and it acts like a sponge for the liquid so only the gas is released when using it. 😁👍
Hi Chunky! You would have to ask your local welding supply if they will exchange them. Medical oxygen has a different valve than a cutting torch setup so you would need to exchange the tanks.😊👍
btw, I found out from local shops that they wont take CO2 containers because "CO2 is very corrosive". I wonder if this is common elsewhere. I was very surprised.
Found your channel by searching about welding. I am just starting out as a hobbyist for personal projects and as a positive distraction (therapy 🤣). When looking for tanks, do you ask for the last test/certification to assist in negotiation the price? I myself don't know what I am looking for. I am not looking to resale any tanks, I'm just looking for myself to get a couple. One for straight argon and the other for 75/25 argon. I too live in the Tucson area (born and raised). Wouldn't mind meeting up with you to chit chat about welding or other areas of interests. In the Tucson area, where do you like to shop for your welding supplies?
Hi Mikell! I’m always amazed how many tucsonans have watched this video! Lately, if I find a tank for a reasonable price I just buy it regardless of the test date. The availability of tanks in Arizona and everywhere else has dried up for the suppliers. I sold a couple tanks last week and one of them was to a guy from Mesa who drove down to get it because there is nothing available in the phoenix valley. I called airgas the other day and they said they have 3400+ tanks on order and the wait time is over a year to get one now. So if you see a tank come up for sale, grab it. I’m not very active in the tank game anymore due to the amount of welding work I have right now, so I won’t be competing with you for the used tanks. Mathesons on Grant rd. Just west of Oracle rd. Is the best place to exchange your tanks when you find one. If it is out of test date they only charge $15 where as most of other shops are charging $50 or more. Let me know if you have any other questions and I’m always happy to help. 😁👍Don
What if there's a name printed on the collar of tank I went to see one that had that was just wondering the guy selling it say I can just trade it out but others said I won't be able to
I always take a picture and ask the guys at the welding supply if they will exchange it. I’ve been burned a couple times that way. If I get stuck with one, I either grind the name off or cut the tank and make it into a garden bell.😁👍
Many business won't do a straight swap ie a nitrogen compressed tank for an argon mix,. As the have a different valve and price per tank, what they will do is take the take a give you a credit on a new one, ect.....
I guess it depends on the shop and the area you are in. Here in Tucson, none of the shops care about the valve or the gas that was in it. They only care that it is a high pressure steel tank and that it is in good shape. 😀👍
@@CAUSE-and_EFFECT_MIRROR I'm in California, and in the Fresno area, no shops around here will do. Straight swap, but they will give a certain amount for the tank and apply it to the purchase of another tank, ie a nitrogen compressed tank for an argon tank as the argon cost more,. They say the fitting is different so they won't fill a nitrogen compressed tank with argon and so on. So around here I just keep me eyes open from argon tanks,.
I believe a 20 pound co2 translates to a 60 cubic foot tank. Yes, most shops will trade in two tanks for a larger one, but I would confirm that with your local shop before you start buying the used tanks.😊👍
Ive been thinking of using tanks as targets for my disc golf course I'm building. Did you say acetylene tanks are thinner, that people do not want them. I need to search.
@@PranaTech used to be easy to have any tank refilled but it's changed in last 10 years. Gas companies here are picky. They only want to re-fill their own branded tanks. Usually you leave a deposit or lease a tank from them which can be expensive. eBay and market place are full of tanks for very little money. You can't even really weigh them in for scrap either as scrappers won't take pressurised vessels.
Wow, that’s a tough market for guys trying to make a living starting out welding! Leased tanks here in the US are very unpopular and have virtually died out in most areas because everyone figured out it was a scam. Sounds like that would be a good business to start over there. Filling tanks for shops that have their own tanks. For the price you are seeing for those tanks I would buy them up all day even if I couldn’t get them refilled. Over here people pay $600-$1500 for garden bells made out of old welding tanks with a custom artsy stand to hang it from. 😊👍
Question.....I noticed the bottles you are buying are one color and then when you sell them they are another color after you get them filled. My question is ....Are you just exchanging the empty bottle for a filled one?
Hi Greg, if it has a name on it, I call the welding gas company before I purchase the tank and confirm they will exchange it. I have gotten burned a couple of times before. I have even removed the owner ring from a tank before but it is a major pain. 👍😊
Thanks for a most informative video. While shopping for a new tank I found your video and you have given me a whole new tactic. The least I could do is Like and Subscribe. Thanks again.
I just purchased a group of tanks for fairly cheap price but two have a distributor's name on the collar. Does it mean they were leased? Should I contact the company?
That’s a good question! What I do is look up the company and see if they are still in business. If not or if they are hundreds of miles away from me, I just grind the name off the ring and paint the ring flat black. If they are a local company, I call them and ask if there is a reward for one of their tanks. Sometimes they will give you a refill of your other tank for free to get their tank back. Here in Tucson, leased tanks are a very rare thing. People just don’t go for it at all so it wasn’t successful. Other places it is the norm and about the only option. It just depends on the area you live. Hope this helps😁👍
This may be true where you live, but not everywhere. Here in Tucson I have a commercial account with Airgas and regularly exchange their tanks with other suppliers here in Town and vice versa. There are differing rules all over the country I have found. There are no universal rules across the country. 😊👍
Learned a lot through this video Sir. I too live in south Tucson so we must be close; may have even crossed paths at the stores? In any case, I'm a recently retired Vet and looking into buying my first set of tanks. I come across many but stuck with SMAW and Flux core welding mainly but now moving to MIG shortly. If willing, I'd sure like to connect and meet with you to learn more about these date markings if you're willing to share. I was going to start interfacing with Mathesons' but would be curious to learn if you would recommend a different place. Thank you again!
Hi there! Glad to see another Tucsonan on here! The markings are pretty straight forward. Just make sure the date is within 5 years unless it has a star and then it can go to ten years. Even if it is out of date, Mathesons will still take it and only charges $15-$20 for the hydrotest when you exchange the tank. They are still by far the best to deal with here in town. 👍😁
Do you still do this? I can't find anyone in my area that will do this. They only want to exchange same gas for same gas. Maybe I'm not articulating to the counter people what I want to do very well or maybe new regulations preclude them from doing this. I live in Rochester, NY.
Hi Vinny, yes, I’m still doing this today and here in Tucson they are very open with the exchange process. I have heard from others in other states and some areas are very strict and won’t allow exchanges between gases. Kind of a bummer.🙁
I brought a 55 cubic feet helium tank with handle from my local welding company two years ago. I live in an apartment and store the helium tank upright indoors away from heat since don’t have a garage or strap against the wall. I always unscrew the balloon regulator after each use and turn off the helium tank. Do you think my practice is safe? The last thing I don’t want is the tank to explode and cause major damages.
Hi there, yes you are fine with your practice as it is. Helium won’t ever explode and that tank is small enough that it doesn’t need a strap or chain. 👍😀Don
Hi Edwin! Here in Tucson the answer is yes. They don’t care about the gas, only the steel of the tank. Others have informed me that it is not the same rules in other parts of the country. Best thing to do is call your welding supply places and see if they will exchange it. 😁👍
Awesome video! Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us! Just did a quick search in my local area and found someone with a few 300cf tanks for $100 each. Are these bigger ones harder to sell due to their weight? And how much does it cost to refill these with the 75/25 mix?
Hi Bernie! That’s a great deal on those 300cf tanks! Here where I live it’s about $58 to fill a 300cf tank. As for difficulty in selling the tanks, every area is different. The 300cf tanks only weigh 15 pounds more than the 250 so weight shouldn’t be a problem. The larger your metropolitan area is, the easier it is to sell them because the demand is higher for the tanks. Here in Tucson I could sell those tanks all the time for $350. Sometimes I have to wait a week but usually they sell in just a few days. I would call your local welding shops and see what they get for a tank and then undercut them by $100. This makes you some cash and gets the buyer a good deal and everyone wins. Hope this helps. 😊👍Don
@@PranaTech thank you for the information! Gonna have to go and buy them now. How do you usually transport them in your truck? Especially if there’s multiple? Do you lay them down or stand them up and strap them? This lady had 12 in my area but they already sold. 😏
I saw your video and picked up an empty helium tank (size 5) this weekend for $35. I'm trying to learn on a 1980 Eastwood Mig welder. Problem is I'm hoping to downgrade to a smaller tank. So far I haven't found a place willing to do the downgrade to a smaller tank. Second problem I'm having is the first couple places say they will exchange like for like (Helium size 5 for Helium size 5) but there's no helium to be had around here. Will they accept a tank with stickers removed? Then I can say it was Argon/CO2 and try and sell it like you do?
I would try and find a shop that will exchange it for Argon/co2 but if not, I would remove the sticker and try it that way. Then sell it and buy a smaller tank and pocket the profits. $35 is a smoking deal. 😁👍 Where are you located?
Great video. I bought a full-size 125 tank on OfferUp. I wonder though, the collar has a stamp. I saw on another video with a word of caution about rentals being sold i.e... theft. This one doesn't say rental or anything. Any thoughts? Either way, thank you.
After watching this video, I bought 320cf Helium tank. I called the local store and they said right away if it’s personal tank or rental. He says it’s most likely stolen. I check the tank and it doesn’t say rental but it does say Praxair name is on it. Do I assume this was a rental and wasn’t returned ??
Hi Mike, what I do is take a picture of the tank’s marking and then show the guys at the welding supply and ask them if they will exchange it. I tell them that I am considering buying this tank. If they say no then I don’t purchase it. If you have already purchased it and they won’t exchange it then the only option is to grind off the markings and repaint the tank or cut the bottom off and make a garden bell out of it. Big garden bells are selling for $600 to $1200 in my area.😊👍
@@PranaTech lol, I was thinking of making an outdoor Fire pit but the garden bell is a great idea. I’ll have to wait for my welder to arrive to figure out what to use it for if it doesn’t work. It will be a great first project. Maybe I can do both. Thanks for replying !!
Hi Raul, yes it has been the best welder I’ve owned. I use it all the time and it still works great! I used it a couple days ago repairing my wrought iron fence in my front yard with an extension cord and welded everything beautifully. 👍😁
Hi John, you are correct about there being different valves for the different types of gasses. But here in Arizona, they care most about the steel value of the tank and will exchange any tank for any other tank of the same size, regardless of gas content or valve. 😀👍
Hi there, here in Tucson the welding supply shops will usually let me combine them and trade up to a larger size. I would call your local shops and make sure before you buy them.😁👍
Hi Daniel, I’ve had mine since last January and welded with it weekly since then. Great welder! It will stick weld and do manual lift Tig, but it’s primary use is as a mig welder. I love the thing!😀👍
@@PranaTech okay . . . looking at Weldpro and they have a Mig and DC Stick 155 . . . . I could not tell if the Yeswelder was DC Stick ....thanks for the response!
Hi Marco, scuba tanks won’t work but the medical oxygen tanks can sometimes work if you can get a few of them and trade up to a regular welding tank. This you should confirm this though with your local gas supplier before you buy any of these though.👍😀
Hi, greetings from Tucson. I've been struggling and I found your video and conveniently we're in the same city. May I ask where you exchange the tanks?
Hi Dave, Mathesons on Grant Road just west of Oracle Road is the best place I’ve found. They only charge $15 dollars if the tank is old and out of hydrostatic test and their prices for gas are the cheapest. Let me know if you need any other information. 😁👍
That’s a great price! What I do is take a picture of the markings and ask my local shop if they will exchange this bottle and show it to them before I purchase the tank. That way I know before I buy.😀👍
Don’t throw it away! People are getting big money for old welding tanks made into bells👍 www.etsy.com/listing/591022545/metal-sculpturebelljapanese-artoutdoor?gpla=1&gao=1&
First, thanks so much for the discount code for Yeswelder. I enjoyed your review of the MIG welder and I ordered the MIG 205DS today and the code worked. Saved $38. QUESTION about tanks. I found a used Helium tank for sale locally. $60 The potential problem is the fact that "AIRGAS" is stamped at the top of the tank. I assume the person isn't trying to sell a rented tank, but will the fact that the name being stamped cause issues if I attempted to trade it in? Thanks!
I did have a couple that had names on them and one of the places here in Tucson wouldn’t take them. I finally found a shop that would swap them out but I almost got burned on that one.
They are usually aluminum and don’t bring much profit so I usually stay away from them. The larger steel tanks are where the money is, but I have bought a couple full size aluminum Co2 tanks that I exchanged for steel welding tanks.😀👍
Have you ever bought one that was previously lost or stolen. What was the result? My dad bought two at a garage sale years ago. One was leased. The other stolen. Lost both tanks. Out $100 . That was like 2010 Just wondering if you had any tips. Like I have a oxy tank. With a white ring painted on the collar. That's an owned tank. Great content. Thanks
Ok, so I have been taken a couple times by the leased tank deal. I now call the welding supply company BEFORE I purchase and ask them if they will exchange the tank if it has “example” name on it. This way I never get stuck with a leased tank again. 😁👍
@@PranaTech have you ever seen one with a collar stamped with “United States Air Force”? Not sure if I should purchase it. Called gas companies in my area and they want me to bring it in to see if they can exchange it..
Hi Bernie! I’ve never had an Air Force tank but I have had quite a few US Army tanks. They are very high quality and most of the ones I’ve gotten were from the 1940’s and still going strong. I’ve never had a problem exchanging them at any shop. From what I understand the military sells them off after a certain number of years and then they go out to the public use. 😁👍
Can you do same and exchange other sizes (40,60,80 cubic feet) of gas cylinders for their equivalent size? Or is the exchanging, regardless of gas type, only for the big bottle (120)? Thanks
Here in Tucson, most of the shops will exchange any size for the equivalent size. Gas doesn’t matter here either. I can exchange any type of high pressure tank for any type of gas that I need. I have even traded multiple smaller tanks for the equivalent cubic foot larger tank. I would check with your local shops to verify this in your area though. 👍😊
Hi, I just came across your video, I have been given 3 tanks. This guy just wanted to get rid of them, he does auction sales and I guess they would not sell. My question is, how do I tell what gas is in them? I live in Canada so things might be different here. I wanted to start using oxy/propane. My father always used oxy/ acetylene, but here in Canada you have to get a filling contract for acetylene. So I never bothered setting up my torches I bought some new hoses but before I hooked any thing up I wanted to know what was what. It has been a long time since I have used gas of any kind. I would appreciate any advise you could give me. Thanks Luke.
Hi Luke, I would just take them in to a welding supply and exchange them for the gasses you need. They usually don’t care what gas the bottle was. They just purge them and refill them with whatever gas they need or sells best. I would think Canada would be the same.😁👍
Hi Nick, I guess that would depend on the seller since offer up is individuals selling. I know the tank needs to be empty to ship though. I find my best deals locally that way I don’t have to pay shipping. If you don’t mind paying for the shipping, Amazon has a few sellers that will ship new tanks to you. Hope this helps!👍😀
Hi Justin, Yes!!! Acetylene tanks are very different and are not high pressure tanks! I don’t ever buy acetylene tanks because they they can’t be exchanged for anything else. 😀👍
Me either until I started looking at the used tanks. The only ones that I have seen this old are the ex-military ones. I think they must be of a much higher quality.👍
Thanks for the video. Bought 2 helium tanks for $150 total. Swapped one for 75/25. Sold the other for $225. Great side hustle!
Hi Matthew, thank you for the great comment! That’s a great deal! I’m glad to see someone else capitalizing on this largely untapped market. 👍😁Don

I do the same thing in Seattle. I find the best deals are when companies are going out of business
Yes, me too! 😊👍
Thanks for the info i live in tucson as well and i was trying to figure out how to price a bunch of tanks i need to sell
You are very welcome Manuel! 😁👍
Using propane for shielding gas is one way to save money. Good one.
Your a solid dude👍 I appreciate this video. Subscribed.
Thank you! I hope the information helps you!😊👍
Great video but a word of warning for others before you go running out and buying tanks is to call your local gas suppliers FIRST to make sure they'll accept exchanging a tank from a different type of gas.
They have over 3500 tanks on order right now.☹️
Our local Airgas store overcharges something terrible. I find the local Central Welding Supply reasonable (Fairbanks, Alaska).
The problem is you went to airgas I won't buy anything from the over priced shity service company find a small family owned company
Well don't ever do business with Airgas! There are way too many others out there!
I stopped a couple years ago. Found a great company to deal with.😊👍
I'm in tucson too. I just need one to use. I'll have to check fb
I still see deals here in town. You just have to search regularly and have the cash ready to buy right when something pops up. The most common tanks here in town are old oxygen tanks. Mathesons on Grant Road is the best place to exchange tanks. Good luck on the search.😊👍
Awesome thanks
Very good point! Thanks👍😊
BS! They're not usually stolen - people die and the family members find them in the barn or garage... etc.
I have suspected that some of the tanks that I’ve gotten have been from deceased as well. I haven’t asked, but it sure looks that way.
Who knew this could be a way to make some extra cash! Thank you for the info. All the best to you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your time and valuable info!!!
Hi Bob! Thank you for your kind comment! I hope this info helps you.😊👍
Thank you. Interesting side hustle!
Glad you liked it!
When fermenting alcohol it produce lot of CO2. If have compressor and low pressure tank, can use it in welting. High pressure is expensive.
Hi Jari, thank you for this great information! I did not know this.😊👍
thank you for the tips
You are very welcome!😊👍
Thanks for all the tips and info regarding welding tanks and purchasing. Keep up the good work Sir.
Thank you! Glad you liked it. I hope you can use the info to make some extra money. 😊👍Don
Hi, Amazing video, Quick question, where, and how do you sell the tanks? I have found a couple deals in my area, I just want to make sure I can sell them and they don't collect dust in my garage. Thanks
The oxygen bottles, what can you change it for Argon? C25?
Man I appreciate you for making this video, this has been a fun thing to do on my days off
Hi Luis, I’m glad to hear you are going to continue! It brings me joy to see someone benefit from one of my videos!🙏😊❤️
Are the Army tanks considered "owned" tanks and are they exchangeable?
Yes, they are decommissioned tanks and are sold out into the public domain to become part of the inventory that is out there. They are some of the highest quality tanks that I have come across. 😊👍
Hey, I'm a tucson local, would you mind telling me who has telling best prices on exchanging an out of test tank?
Hi Tanner! Yes, Mathesons on Grant Rd. Just west of Oracle Rd. They have the best price on exchange and for an out of date tank they usually only charge $15 😊👍
Will they swap aluminum C02 tanks for high pressure steel?
Hi Tanner! Yes, I’ve done that many times both ways. 👍
Hi, really great full for the informative video, I just purchased a some used equipment, it came with a full size 100% Argon , tank says oil free, it gray with no markings or label on it. Any info on possibly getting it excepted?
Hi Shannon, I would just take it in and exchange it with confidence. At this point you own it so I would just bring it in to the local shop and act like you do it all the time.😁👍
How about tanks that had liquid petroleum gas LPG that's used for even domestic cooking? Are they high presure tanks good enough?
Hi there. No LPG tanks won’t work. The welding supply houses won’t take them in exchange. Sorry.☹️
Hi great video!!
What does the “UE” mean on the tank after the date?
Hi Fred! Usually you will see two letters and it will be the initials of the inspector that did the hydrostatic test.😁👍
I hate AirGas. Fortunately we have two competitors here with better prices.
will gas supply company take tank with other company collar marking
Also what about if the valves are not on the tanks or broken off? I found 4 high pressure tanks but no valves.
@@PranaTech I will check them out.
Peace✌️😊
Did you also repaint the tanks to make them look better?
Hi Gene! Normally I don’t paint them but occasionally if they look too rough and I think they might reject it, then I would paint it and make it look newer. 👍😁
Awesome. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Ledcke! I appreciate your kind words!😊🙏

Can you do the same flip with medical oxy tanks? There’s a guy in my area selling $20/pc
Hi Shane, some of the shops in my area here in Tucson allow me to trade multiple tanks in for a larger tank. I would call the shops in your area and see if they will exchange medical oxygen tanks for a welding tank. If yes, then you are in business! 👍😁
Are medical oxygen tanks exchangeable?
It depends on your welding supplier. I would call them and ask if they will exchange them for a larger welding tank before I bought them. 👍😊
Here in Fairbanks, Alaska it seems tanks are not locally filled. So we just swap out an empty tank for a full one.
Hi Lance, that is how it is here in Tucson too. They just exchange the tank and send the empty ones off to be filled. 😁👍
I’m curious how much you are paying for filling c25 and argon tanks?
Hi Barry, I just filled one up this past week and I was paying around $50 for a 250cf tank, but this last tank cost me $69 out the door! That is nuts!😳
I just picked up a 5ft cylinder and it has on its collar property of calif tool weld do I grind it off and repaint the whole tank?
I grinded it off and repainted the tank and made it look used how much do I sell it for?
Hi Nate! I was just replying to you and your message came through that you cut it off. That’s what I do most of the time.👍😊
If it’s a K size tank with 250 cf, I sell those with mig gas full for $325 and they always sell fast here in Tucson. Usually within 3 days. It might be worth more where you are!👍😊
@@PranaTech I purchased it for 40$ Im gonna list it for 300$ see how it goes thank you for replying to all my questions

Hello,
I noticed you're running a YES welder. How do you like it?
Hi D! I love it! It welds amazing and has been flawlessly reliable. Incredible value in my opinion. 👍😁
Does the tanks have to have the title paperwork with them?
Hi Kyle, no one has ever asked me for any paperwork on any tank. Do beware of tanks that have a company name on the ring around the top. Those are usually leased tanks and companies won’t exchange them.👍
Propane tanks work?
😊🙏Don
Can a scuba air tank be used for acetylene?
Hi Robert! No it can’t unfortunately. Acetylene is a very special tank and is filled with balsa wood and it acts like a sponge for the liquid so only the gas is released when using it. 😁👍

You are very welcome my friend! Let me know if you have any other questions.😊
Can I use Beyiwod O2 Medical MD 2.5L tanks for flamework? Can I get them refilled?
Hi Chunky! You would have to ask your local welding supply if they will exchange them. Medical oxygen has a different valve than a cutting torch setup so you would need to exchange the tanks.😊👍
@@PranaTech thanks for the info
btw, I found out from local shops that they wont take CO2 containers because "CO2 is very corrosive". I wonder if this is common elsewhere. I was very surprised.
That is very strange! I have co2 tanks from the 60’s with no corrosion at all. 🤔
Good info, way to succeed bro.
Thanks Doug!😊🙏❤️
😁👍Don
@@PranaTech I guess I'll keep an eye out. Thank you for the response and feed back.👍👍
What if there's a name printed on the collar of tank I went to see one that had that was just wondering the guy selling it say I can just trade it out but others said I won't be able to
I always take a picture and ask the guys at the welding supply if they will exchange it.
anybody success exchanged the tank in the California la area or orange area ? Address ? Thank you
@@CAUSE-and_EFFECT_MIRROR I'm in California, and in the Fresno area, no shops around here will do.
Hello good video a tank which is tested and has the date and no plus but only a star, is that five years
Hi Max, if it has a star, it is a 10 year tank. The plus just means it can be overfilled by 10% 😊👍
I see a lot of #20 and #10 c02 tanks, what cubic feet does that translate to and Can I trade that in for mig tank?
I believe a 20 pound co2 translates to a 60 cubic foot tank. Yes, most shops will trade in two tanks for a larger one, but I would confirm that with your local shop before you start buying the used tanks.😊👍
Ive been thinking of using tanks as targets for my disc golf course I'm building. Did you say acetylene tanks are thinner, that people do not want them. I need to search.
Hi Gordon, yes, acetylene tanks are thinner steel because they are low pressure. They are filled with balsa wood too. 😊👍
@@PranaTech how would one go about acquiring such tanks?
Hi Gordon, I have my best luck on Craigslist and offer up. Just have to search until you find a deal.😊👍
Would a 100 pound propane tank wrk?
Hi Zak, no a propane tank won’t work. Sorry 😞
These full sized tanks can be found on marketplace in UK for around £10-20. Shame no one will refill them.
Wow! So they consider full size tanks disposable? 😳What do welders use that are doing production welding?
Hi Greg! Wow, good eyes! Yes, that is exactly right. I just bring in the old bottle and they exchange it for a filled one. 😁👍
@@PranaTech What about if the bottle has a company name on it or do you shy away from those bottles?
Hi Greg, if it has a name on it, I call the welding gas company before I purchase the tank and confirm they will exchange it. I have gotten burned a couple of times before. I have even removed the owner ring from a tank before but it is a major pain. 👍😊
Thanks for a most informative video. While shopping for a new tank I found your video and you have given me a whole new tactic. The least I could do is Like and Subscribe. Thanks again.
Thank you Stephen! I really appreciate your kind words! 👍😀
Grinding the name off is this guy said is a felony just like grinding the serial number off and they can still see it
You don't want to buy tanks that are from Airgas or other similar onda tanks those are owned by them and no one else will fill them
This may be true where you live, but not everywhere. Here in Tucson I have a commercial account with Airgas and regularly exchange their tanks with other suppliers here in Town and vice versa. There are differing rules all over the country I have found. There are no universal rules across the country. 😊👍
So if it's out of hydrotest date, how much does that cost to have it re-certified?
Here in Tucson it varies from $20 to $50 depending on the shop. I would call around and see what is locally.👍😊
@@PranaTech Thank you Sir.
flammable gas tanks have reverse thread valve
Yes!😊👍
👍😀Don
Prana-Tech Hi Don, thank you for your reply. Hope you keep on doing what you’re doing to make money. 😀
If your voice starts to sound funny, open a window.
Hello...can I trade a 80 nitrogen take in for a 75/25 argon? great vid
Hi Edwin! Here in Tucson the answer is yes. They don’t care about the gas, only the steel of the tank. Others have informed me that it is not the same rules in other parts of the country. Best thing to do is call your welding supply places and see if they will exchange it. 😁👍
@@PranaTech Thank you. I got the update (black and red) Yeswelder 250ds with 220V cord....it really nice
You can just lay them down. Acetylene is the only one that needs to be upright.👍😊
@@PranaTech okay thank you!
After a hydrostatic test a plus sign combined with a star is 10 years what is a star by itself is that five years
If it has a star, it is a 10 year tank.😊👍
Shame I can’t give more than one “thumbs up”!!!
Thanks🙏😊
What about scuba tanks?
Hi George! Unfortunately they won’t exchange those at the welding supply stores. I wish they did!🙁
Thank you so much!
You can't use acetylene for anything else - that's why it's an odd shape . It has an absorbant in it, and a different valve.
Yes, acetylene is a low pressure tank with thin walls.👍
Either one would be a great first project! Link me a picture when you get it finished. I’d love to see it! 😊👍
@@PranaTech can I repaint a tank?
What does UE mean on the one tank after the date.
Hi Carl, it is usually the initials of the shop or inspector who did the test on that date. 😊👍
@@PranaTech oh ok that makes sense thx for the reply👍👍
One cuestión is that yes welder a good welder at this time since you buy it???
Hi Raul, yes it has been the best welder I’ve owned. I use it all the time and it still works great! I used it a couple days ago repairing my wrought iron fence in my front yard with an extension cord and welded everything beautifully. 👍😁
If tank is complete with valve, they are not all interchangeable; oxygen in particular.
Hi John, you are correct about there being different valves for the different types of gasses. But here in Arizona, they care most about the steel value of the tank and will exchange any tank for any other tank of the same size, regardless of gas content or valve. 😀👍
I found 3 Co2 tanks 5lbs all three for $60. Do you think I can exchange them
Hi there, here in Tucson the welding supply shops will usually let me combine them and trade up to a larger size. I would call your local shops and make sure before you buy them.😁👍
@@PranaTech in your area are you able to trade them for a lager size argon?
Yes, they will let me trade up to any high pressure gas. Acetylene is the one that they won’t trade up with around here.👍
@@PranaTech is airgas one of your suppliers?. And I wanted to thank you for the fast response and time.
Hi there, yes Airgas is one of the suppliers that I have an account with. I also use Praxair and lately Mathesons has been giving me the best deals.😊👍
How long have you had the yes welder? Is it Tig, DC stick and Mig?
Hi Daniel, I’ve had mine since last January and welded with it weekly since then. Great welder! It will stick weld and do manual lift Tig, but it’s primary use is as a mig welder. I love the thing!😀👍
@@PranaTech okay . . . looking at Weldpro and they have a Mig and DC Stick 155 . . . . I could not tell if the Yeswelder was DC Stick ....thanks for the response!
No problem at all! Let me know if you have any other questions. 😁
Can scuba oxygen tank work the same?
Also can medical oxygen tanks be used as well?
Prana-Tech thanks for the info, I appreciate it. If you have any tanks up for sale let me know. I'm still looking for a deal on one
Hi Dave! I don’t have any right now, but if I run into a deal I’ll get in touch with you. 👍😀
Prana-Tech Thank you!
saw a 125 cf but it has manufacture markings like Southern Oxygen welding supplies based on FL (i googled) - can this be a buy? $50
That’s a great price! What I do is take a picture of the markings and ask my local shop if they will exchange this bottle and show it to them before I purchase the tank. That way I know before I buy.😀👍
Ok thanks
No luck, called air gas, local welding store. Nobody want it so trash place it goes
Don’t throw it away! People are getting big money for old welding tanks made into bells👍 www.etsy.com/listing/591022545/metal-sculpturebelljapanese-artoutdoor?gpla=1&gao=1&
Acetylene tanks have a special liner.
Yes, it’s filled with balsa wood. 👍😊
Thanks!
Hi John, what I usually do is call airgas or the local guy I use and ask them before I purchase the tank.😁👍
I did have a couple that had names on them and one of the places here in Tucson wouldn’t take them. I finally found a shop that would swap them out but I almost got burned on that one.
Thankyou very very much.
Hi there! You are very welcome! I’m glad you liked it and I hope you make some money.👍😊
What about the silver and green med o2 tanks?
They are usually aluminum and don’t bring much profit so I usually stay away from them. The larger steel tanks are where the money is, but I have bought a couple full size aluminum Co2 tanks that I exchanged for steel welding tanks.😀👍
Very helpful Thank you for taking your time to put together a very informative video
Thank you for your kind comment! 🙏😊❤️
Have you ever bought one that was previously lost or stolen. What was the result?
My dad bought two at a garage sale years ago.
One was leased. The other stolen. Lost both tanks.
Out $100 .
That was like 2010
Just wondering if you had any tips.
@@PranaTech do you think the same concept applies to this Air Force tank? And the tank is fair game and I can get it refilled?
Here in Tucson yes. where you are it will depend on the guys at each shop and their policy.
I would think Canada would be the same.😁👍
Do the ship these gas on offer up? I would like to buy a small co2 bottle and a small argon bottle.
Aren’t acetylene tanks different?
Hi Justin, Yes!!! Acetylene tanks are very different and are not high pressure tanks! I don’t ever buy acetylene tanks because they they can’t be exchanged for anything else. 😀👍
Didn't know tanks were that old !!!
Me either until I started looking at the used tanks. The only ones that I have seen this old are the ex-military ones. I think they must be of a much higher quality.👍
