Without using clever maths the best way to get a reasonably accurate size estimate would be to use your screen recording to show the altitude, measure the shark's size on screen and then hover at the same height and camera settings over an object of known size, and work it out from that.
sharks populations are down 70% worldwide from human hunting... while I wouldn't want to swim near this guy, I believe it's important to not inspire fear by scary music but educate and inform beach goers of potential danger so they can stay safe. Sharks deserve our respect and protection
Amazing footage. You are so lucky to be where you live. You get the most beautiful shots. I have been a subscriber and watched your videos for the past couple years. you have really inspired me into the drone hobby. Thanks for all you do.
Beautiful view Dustin, I will take looking at sharks over the fires here in California any day. Great Capture of that shark down there, you and the family have a great one and be safe my friend.
You know, you should teach lifeguards how to operate drones so they can do exactly what you just did. I mean I don't think shark attacks are that common but it would be a good warning system.
Most all LIfeguard programs at least on the western US have implemented drone programs. Southern California beaches especially from Long Beach to Malibu operate drones because of it being the area where great white pups grow to adulthood so there can be 3-5 12ft sharks right outside the surf a majority of the time.
@@will4real58 no need to apologize, its a fairly new thing, it got fast tracked in Los Angeles County because of the very large number of large sharks and the hammerhead shark issues that were occurring when we had an El Nino even which brought warm water up this and some very agitated hammerheads that kept attacking kayaks
@@CYCO88tv Gotcha, yeah I use my drones for livestock recovery, not as heroic, but it's about the same thing, though spotting a shark in the water is a little bit easier, than a calf and it's momma bedded down in the woods lol.
Hey Dustin, I'll cut you some slack. I've been to Hawaii many many times over 26 years or so... seen all types of marine life, including of course a lot of sharks. Your little video did not even show people on the beach, or anyone in danger... which is actually good of course. Good resolution. Beautiful water. Great place. Not much real terror there for me, but it was cool you filmed it. Music could have been different, lol! But hey, it's your video, and you had fun so I commend you. And I wish I was still there. Have fun with your family there.
Dustin, nice video! Love the music!!! You should have dropped off lunch! LOL!!! Hey! That would make excellent footage! Dropping them some food and watching them eat! Hmm?
Awesome video. I’m guessing this shark had to be between 8 to 10 feet long. I have the Mavic pro 1, Mavic 2 zoom, and the Mavic mini but video quality on the air 2 looks very nice. I’m going to have to add it to my DJI drone collection soon.
Shark spotting with the Mavic is kind of my dream. I would have risked going down to under 20feet, but not much lower over the open water. My Mavic also wears a floating buoy backpack in case it crashes in the water. The shark could be a tiger, but its snout looks fairly pointy for a tiger, tiger sharks usually have really square heads. There are also Galapagos sharks spotted out there in that part of the island, so it might also be one of them. That shark was minding his own business and really casually cruising. They are always out there for sure. Great video thanks for sharing.
Great video. Too bad you didn't have one of your watercraft to send after it for some simultaneous under water footage. I filmed some dolphins with my Mavic Pro and nearly had them splash me because I was less than 3 feet above the water for some of it.
wow great catch! with all the innovation on these quads 4K/8K video and such, it would be good to add a basic audio channel so you could at least send a message. would be very handy in this situation! great coverage though!
Nice footage Dustin. Without some perspective for measurement it’s hard to say the size but I’m guessing 6 to 8 feet. It had to be quite sizeable for you to spot it from the air. You should send the footage to the ocean centre for an opinion. I’ve been to Maui and It’s odd to see them venture past the reef and come so close to shore.🤙
My spearfisherman friend who frequents this area said it’s def not a tiger because of the long fins. He said he saw a shark like this about 3 weeks ago in that same spot, it was 9 ft long. Also said it’s pretty common.
Wow! You can add "Lifeguard" to your resume, Dustin. We saw a similar scene in Florida while watching from an elevated spot as several large sharks slowly cruised within 100 feet of unaware swimmers. Luckily, the sharks took no apparent interest in the bathers as they happily frolicked in the water. As a long time scuba diver, I believe these occurrences are far more common than most people know ..... or want to know ..... Jess
🍻 Jess. Probably harmless. Although we did have a recent tiger take off a tourist's arm killing her. She was about 50 yards off shore in wailea / Makena area of Maui
It does look sizable, but It's pretty hard to judge the size without a reference. I would guess around 8 - 12 feet. I've only had my Air-2 for a short while and I still get real nervous flying over water. Following a shark around would be pretty cool. Nice job!
They eat birds occasionally, if he went too close it could have thought it was a bird and tried to eat it. This would obviously destroy the drone, damage the environment and maybe injure the shark.
This guy seems to fit the description. Thanks for posting this Dustin. Great job as always. "Although sharks rarely bite humans, the tiger shark is reported to be responsible for a large share of fatal shark-bite incidents, and is regarded as one of the most dangerous shark species. Great video. Music was a bit dramatic. Difficult to estimate length without some scale but my guess is 4 to 4.5 meters (whatever that is in feet...?) Magnificent creatures & so essential for a healthy marine ecosystem. Here in Australia there have been several shark attacks this year, some fatal. Stay outta the water & there's no problem.
I remember back in the 90s at Olowalu , a tiger shark killed a woman. From what I remember there was a local nearby who said she was decapitated. She lived nearby and had been swimming there for years doing laps before the attack.
Nice footage. Tiger sharks are very opportunistic apart from being quite aggressive. But in general they hunt for familiar preys. Still I would stay clear period...lol.
Don’t know what kind of shark, but, did you have a polarizing filter on. I live in FL and always fly with a polarized filter on due to glare especially over water.
Saw plenty of remoras swimming around him. They make some kind of 'shark repellent', a liquid that smells like sharks blood? Not sure .. saw it on Discovery channel long time ago, but it appeared to work. Now, if you could invent a 'delivery system' to fly over and drop that repellent, then patent the process, you'd be living Kiʻekiʻena ma ka puaʻa ! Mahalo!

Hard to tell from that altitude but probably 8-10 feet in length. Couldn't really see the markings that are characteristic of a tiger either but I don't think it is based off pictures of other tigers. Nice looking shark either way. Seeing videos like this really make we want to get to Hawaii some day.
I think we're gonna need a bigger drone. Love the dramatic music. 😱
