@@YiannisA Nice! Honestly, the biggest tip when transitioning to a narrower board is just putting in the time and practice. Start off paddling in calmer flat water conditions and simply get use to the movement of the board while working on keeping good form. Once your body is use to balancing in calm conditions then work on paddling in rougher conditions to improve from there. There will probably still be a lot of falling involved but continue to put in the practice and you'll see improvements!
I went from an inflatable to a Bote solid SUP. I have a lot of upper back pain after a ride - I think I’m standing too far upright and not using my core. I’m definitely using my arms and shoulders they get tired.
Good video, thanks! Most people overestimate their swimming skills, go out without floatation aid or leash. A man died a few weeks ago who went out with his girlfriend on one board, they had a beef and he wanted to swim to shore. I've seen another one almost die, about 50 meters from the shore, they were playing with a ball, there was a little wind, he started swimming after the ball, for a minute or so, the wind kept blowing the ball. Finally he reached it but then he got exhausted fighting for his life holding onto the ball, lifeguards got him out. So, get a PFD and a leash, maybe it's less "cool" but better be a less cool living person than a dead (literally) cool one.
Fantastic video Ethan! Really generous of you to walk through the basics in such detail. Lots of great tips that I'll be coming back to in the weeks to come as I start my SUP journey.
How many times can you say paddle board in 26 min? He may have broken the record and needs to enter this video into the guineas book of world records for consideration 👏
We're all 'noobs' at some point. Let's embrace learning because I don't care if I look like an idiot. I care about doing what I love. I'm not out there to prove anything or impress anyone. Just get out there!
Not a bad idea. For long distances or harsh weather conditions, I usually have a kayak paddle with me to easily get home if needed. And the kayak paddle is tethered to the board with a leash. You know, for safety.
Wow!!! I’ve been thinking about learning to paddle board at the ripe age of 57 and came upon your video just today. I’m so glad I “found” you and hit that 👍 button and subscribed! Looking forward to watching more on your channel. Thank you!!!😊
Purchasing two paddle boards tomorrow for my brother and I to have a go paddle boarding. We have no experience so this video I am sure will come in useful! We are only buying 9ft boards as they are cheapest although i have a 10ft one coming in a week or two. Thanks for the great tips!
Safty first, i can,t float but i can swim but i have adhd so try tell my alter ego not to go play 😂😂 i do wear my b.a and leash also i don't do ocean only in land waters, i love the water, i'm a 6 year kayaker and sups are new to me, can't wait. I'm guessing your saying "liters" when your saying you need more "leaders" for bigger people, even subs thought you was saying leaders
After watching and using these tips people are amazed at how fast and well I can paddleboard on the sand.!!! Just j/k great video. Thanks for the info and tips!!!
I’d add on the safety side of things to not go out alone without someone else knowing where you’ll be paddling and when you should be back - and to consider having a phone and waterproof pouch in case you need a way to call for help. Great vid!
When I started with iSUP in 2012 the trend was to only paddle from the knee level not from the front... and using the crunching core power to paddle while top hand is always straight, which prevents tiring your arms and lets you go fast and you also strenghten your core muscle.
I can't agree with the leash argument. I would never use a straight leash, since the force when it is pulled straight is just too big a strain on your tendons. I would just use a coiled one.
I gotta say, I’m new to this sport and watch a lot of videos. You do a real nice job. Thank you. Where is this taking place? It looks perfect. Don’t say California. Please don’t.

Hi Ethan! Thank you for putting together a great tutorial. Very precise, clear, and good helpful information and tips. My family will enjoy the water more with these new techniques, especially with my kiddos. Take a break from kayaking and learn SUP. 🌺😉🤙❤
A Type III PFD will absolutely help you 100% better in an emergency than not wearing one at all. To tell new paddlers not to rely on one to help you because it's not an open-ocean Type I PFD is absolutely inappropriate and a negligent thing to tell new paddlers. Type III USCG / ISO/CE 70NM PFDs designed for paddling can help right an unconscious swimmer as they will always have more flotation on the front than on the back. They also are designed to (and do) keep your head above the water (that's just a totally false statement you made). They aren't guaranteed to rotate an unconscious swimmer like an open-ocean life jacket, but they will still help because of their flotation distribution. Not to mention that it will aid in your rescue in any event by keeping you physically at the surface and making it easier for a rescuer to locate, rotate, hold, and get you out of the water. Without a PFD an unconscious swimmer or someone struggling to breathe or swim is far more likely to quickly sink under the surface and drown. On top of all of that if you aren't wearing your PFD it doesn't matter if you have a Type 1 open ocean lifejacket or not in the events you describe. Even if you are wearing a Type I Life Jacket in the situation of having a heart attack if you don't have help nearby then chances of survival are minimal at best. What a ridiculously extreme example to use to put people off from using basic safety equipment. That's some seriously negligent content in your safety section. I see you're an ASI instructor - which both makes sense that the advice to not to wear a PFD comes from a surfing background, and is a serious shame on ASI to not promote basic safety practices for paddling. It's seriously bad advice for beginners and any paddler. The number one contributing factor to boating deaths is not wearing a PFD. There is no situation in which it is safer to not wear a PFD than it is to wear one (not the same for leashes, by the way). PFDs save lives.
Hi Michael. I’m sorry for offending you and making you feel that I don’t support PFDs. I do support the use of them and recommend people to use them just like I said in the video. I was simply trying to convey the importance of making sure a new paddler knows the situation they are putting themselves into and does not put themselves in a higher risk situation relying solely on a PDF if things go wrong. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Thank you! SO helpful! Not to be a jerk but to be helpful…I hear that English is not your first language (which you speak incredibly well). In English, we use the phrase “more fun” or just “better” rather then “more better, more funner”. Not to be critical, just a tip….because you’ve given me so many just now😃!

Thanks for the tips, I just started an on the two times I fell off, I wasn't able to climb back up, needed those tips so maybe next time I won't need to swim closer to the shore to stand on the lake floor first |D
I'm 92 kg and surfing a 100L fanatic sup and 80% carbon paddle. I am surfing almost every day. I have tried paddles from Fanatic, Starboard and others. My paddles are breaking all the time right in the middle, sometimes also the on the top of the throat of the blade. This is an expensive problem. Please give some tips how to reduce the paddles from breaking or suggest some better paddles. I have tried super long, regular, and super short. Doesnt really matter, paddles are lasting 3-6 months max.
Hey! Sorry for the late reply. I'm definitely not a professional when it comes to SUP surfing but thankfully I have never had a paddle brake on me doing this. I normally use a one piece Black Project LAVA paddle for when I surf and it has held up great. The owner of Black Project Chris is also super helpful when it comes to the kind of questions you're asking, so I would recommend checking out their website and sending him an email as he will be able to give you more answers than what I can. I hope this helps.
I wish I would have found your page a few weeks ago. I am a beginner on SUP, never knew it was a thing, but I am no stranger to the water. I have had years of fun on boogie boards and surf boards. (the big boards) I have had back surgery, and it was recommended by my physical therapist to do more core work to reduce back pain and sciatic pain. Also had a heart attack the same year, but I'm doing well now, at least the Dr is impressed. So I recently purchased an Ascend inflatable, that came with all the fun stuff. Mind you I am a larger fellow at 215 pounds and 5'11". So an 11' board is what was recommended, this thing is 11'L 34"W. I am not looking for all out speed, as I know that won't happen with this size board and my lack of stability at the moment. Went 5 miles on the water first day out. Used the paddle wrong, because why not? Lol... Did half kneeling and sitting with the paddle in the kayak configuration before I got the courage to stand, change out the paddle handle and really dig in to what I was doing. Was told this is a "full body exercise" well that wasn't a lie. The paddle techniques and mounting techniques would have been awesome to know before I went out the first time.
Thanks for sharing Schon and glad to hear you're recovering well from your injury and heart attack! Hope you continue to have fun on the water with your new board!
One of the most nerve wrecking while you are paddling is to meet a newbie on a paddleboard who refuses your basic advices. The second hardest thing is to ignore them when you see them paddling with the wrong technics. I was a sport teacher, it is so difficult to stop teaching. This vid is great, a good job Ethan!
Thank you for your videos, I am paddling on Lake Thun, Switzerland, but still found your videos useful... Today I managed to fully capsize my board including drybag (the top side was down under and the fin sticking out, the drybag stayed firmly in the sup netting things) trying to learn the stepback turn... At first I struggled but once I aplied my basic optimist training from way back and grabed the fin and used it to push down whilst pushing up the lower edge it got turned right side up and I managed to climb on. Did 9km total today...(5. time on the board) though about 1/3 was whilst sitting. Definitively was glad to have worn a swimwest/sup flotation west, it helped imensly with my flipped board (failed to fall in correctly and put weight on the edge whilste falling)
Great video! I just went out for the first time with my 27 yo son on my two new Isle ISUPs. I have a hard paddleboard as well. We both got off to swim and i needed help getting back on the first time but not the second. Never knew about getting on in back so i may try that next. In the meantime I'm doing upper body weight training to help with the whole experience. Thanks again! How do you feel about the inflatable pfds? Less bulk for movement. I'm a decent swimmer but always will have a pfd d with me.
Awesome! Sounds like you're having a fun time learning. Keep it up! 😃And the inflatable PFDs are another great option. For example I'll use one when I do SUP races.
Great video, thanks for the tips! Btw it's so important to be able to see well in the sunshine. What kind of sunglasses do you have on? It looks perfect for the purpose.
Thanks and these are just a cheap pair of sunglasses off of amazon. This style is also popular for cyclist. So, if you just search for cycling sunglasses on amazon you should be able to find yourself a pair as well. 🤙
For adults I recommend using a board at least 10'8" or longer. If you want a board with better glide (how far the board moves forward between your paddle strokes) then I recommend using a longer board. Other than that it large depends on what you plan to use the board for such as for touring, racing or just a fun chill time on the water. Those each require a different size board as they are not only different lengths but also have different shapes. Anyways, I hope that helps you out!
My biggest challenge will be getting my balance back after the winter. Then i will make it my challenge to make more kilometer so i can paddle to the next village. That will be 12kilometer one way
A very good and instructive video thank you Ethan, I'm just about to start SUP paddling at the age of 59 when my gear comes next week , ordered an inflatable Aqua Marina Vapor + Beauchat shorty wetsuit beginning @ my lake on still days when it is just like a mirror :-)
It really depends on your experience, paddling abilities and type of board you're on. For most beginners, winds over 8knots might start to seem more difficult. But, the more experience you gain the stronger wind conditions you can paddle in. If possible always start paddling up wind first that way it is easier to return with the wind if you get tired.
Looking to add more activities to our adventures. Was thinking about buying 2 paddle boards after seeing a few at Costco today for a very reasonable price. Very instructional video. I think i'll go buy those tomorrow and head to the lake this weekend, but first rewatch this again with my wife so she understands all of the stuff you covered. Thanks so much!
Been tasked with teaching a class at work for guests how to paddleboard and kayak.. and I have very little experience on paddleboards. Will be taking some exact quotes from this for my lessons! Thank you for sharing the knowledge!!
WOW! What a great and informative video. I watched a video on kayaking and have been quite a few times, used inflatable sit inside but like the hard sit on top much better as I don't like being confined to a small space, now my bf and myself are going to try inflatable 11.5 board and 35 across SUP and if we like it, we will get the hard ones instead. Going out in a little while to try SUP at the CALM lake nearby. Thanks again for the tutorial.
What's your biggest paddle board challenge?
Just transitioned from a 29’’ wide inflatable touring to an inflatable Naish Maliko 23’’ wide and struggle to balance. Any tips? 😁

Awesome! Have fun with your new gear and putting your new skills into practice! 💪

Ethan - Brilliant Video. Thank you.
Great tips, thank you!
Wonderful beaches ❤ where are you?
La Paz, BCS, Mexico
In your experience, what wind speed should make me nervous for flat water?
It really depends on your experience, paddling abilities and type of board you're on. For most beginners, winds over 8knots might start to seem more difficult. But, the more experience you gain the stronger wind conditions you can paddle in. If possible always start paddling up wind first that way it is easier to return with the wind if you get tired.
Thank you so much!! First race 6/22 in Michigan ❤
Awesome! Best of luck to you and have fun! 🤙🏼😃
Thank you!!

Pad length for paddleboard
Hey Sue, could you clarify what you mean by "pad"?
Cool glasses dude. Where can I get those?
There's a link for a similar pair in the description box below the video. 😎
@@ethanhuffsupAwesome!
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. I hope you all have a fun time trying out your new skills on the water! 😃
Video starts at 12:45
Your time stamp skips the safety lessons and the gear lessons.
Thank you!! This newbie is researching before my first iSUP arrives next week! 🤩 * new subscriber!
man, ocean sweepers are multiplying, smh
3 mins into the video and I lost interest in paddle boarding already.
Been tasked with teaching a class at work for guests how to paddleboard and kayak.. and I have very little experience on paddleboards. Will be taking some exact quotes from this for my lessons! Thank you for sharing the knowledge!!
Thanks for watching and good luck at your class! 😎
