I’m relatively new to the cycling world. I’d heard of Paris Roubaix in 2014 and 2015, so I finally decided to try and watch the damned thing in 2016 to see what all the fuss was about. After an hour or so searching for streams online, I flicked on cable TV to find it had been showing the whole time. I turned on not knowing anything about Matt Hayman or Mitchellton Scott. I’d guess there was about an hour or two left in the race. I distinctly remember seeing some guy in white, blue, and green dropping off and then reattaching to the lead group and thought, “Well done, that man”. The race continued on, and I kept watching with the commentary off (I live in Japan and couldn’t understand much of it) as that guy in white, blue, and green kept riding, and riding, all the way to victory. I didn’t know what I’d just seen, but felt it was something for the ages. Then I saw his reaction and just had to find out more about the man in white, blue, and green. Sure enough that led me to lots of comments about “BSP”, which in turn led me to that spine tingling video Jonesy made, and with that, I was hooked - on pro-cycling, but especially now Mitchelton Scott.

Matt will always be remembered for has amazing victory in the Roubaix velodrome. It was a great reward for someone who spent their entire career helping other riders to win. Enjoy the next phase of your career, Matt.

You can't define Mat's career in one race but, for me, in 2016 I made a last minute decision to subscribe to Eurosport and watch Paris Roubaix live...Had never really been that interested in the classics and this was the first time I'd watched one live...I'd been a fan of OGE for years before that, but only watched the grand tours on TV and with the team through BSP... By chance I watched Paris Roubaix live in 2016 and the memory of that race will be one that lives with me for a very long time, if not for ever...I had no idea a one day classic could be so exciting...By the end of that race my heart was pounding and I was shouting at my TV for Mat to win! Needless to say I watch as many of the classics and monuments as I can now. Thanks Mat, for making my favourite memory of professional bike racing!! Good luck in your new endeavours with the team.... Always keep riding!

He may have had many victories but to have your name in the showers at Roubaix, well what more can be said. BTW, I need a new road bike, I’m the same size as the great man.....any chance I could get my hands on one of Mattys old steeds.....
