Great interview I was wandered the magic behind the Manhattan Trasfer album with Gadd and Breaking Away album with AL Jarreau sound. Steve Gadd is the phenomenon of a studio drummer he was the King 70-80's.
Nobody remembers Carlos Vega which actually played on one tune in that Al Jarreau Time Album, and the song was Love is real.. To me he was the Best out the whole lot. May He Rest In Peace. C.A. :-(
Great interview, thanks!! Look forward to the youtube videos Jay is talking about. Really exciting. Btw, I think the idea about hooking up all the old studio parts and record it like the old days is awsome. A lot of artists would love that because of a) a REAL vintage 70/80s sound and b) promotional stuff.
Jay talks about all his YT and Documentary projects in every interview I’ve seen over last few years but I’ve never seen any of them come to fruition. It would be cool if he could do them, but I’m ok with him just doing these interviews.
did you hear the story about Chick corea and Jay Graydon..there is a video interview, where Jay tell the story..he asked Chick to record the Keyboard part of Spain for Al Jerrau Album..and Chick instead did the part with "piano"
I love Jay, but I cringe when keeps quizzing his interviewer with Q’s. I want to hear explanations from Jay. I don’t need to know that the interviewer also knows what Jay knows. Ha. With that said…I love Jay Graydon. What a legendary career.
This is KILLER Ruben! Btw, I LOVE James Gadson! I feel like Roy Ayers grabbed him for "For Real" by Roy Ayers after hearing the "I want you" album. Ed Green in America is like Gadson, known for the 16th notes on the hats. He got a mention in Zorro's "10 Commandments of R&B drumming" and/or give the Drummer some book from the 90's. I love James on For Real by Roy Ayers. I also love the whole Mystic Voyage album with Ricky Lawson on drums. I consider that album the epitome of entry-level smooth jazz funk drumming! I think of Ricky was 17 at the time of the recording and Dennis Davis told me he was giving him lessons and brought him on when he went on tour with Bowie. He made a great point about how to attack the drums to get the maximum volume.

Just stumbled to this channel. Love the content. I wanna mention some of my favorite drummers besides Porcaro, Gadd and Colauita: Manu Katche, Chester Thompson and Simon Phillips.
20:07 I read somewhere that Keltner was not good with a click. He did a session with it and it wasn’t working, then they took it off and it all clicked…no pun intended
So here's the thing with phase. If you flip the polarity of the top snare mic, you need to flip the phase of the toms, overheads, hihat...and you'll be forcing it to behave like it doesn't in nature. Just because the head moves down doesn't mean you have negative phase, it's what the drum does. Essentially you'll end up with the same thing as if you'd be hearing lying underneath the drumset.
Im going to care Jay! Tape Rules! There are those of us who appreciate the harmonic distortion, and warmth of tape!... So.. tell me where? I WILL send some paper$ to assist you in the quest for proper tape machine materials, for proper audio etiquette! We Love You Jay!!
J.G is my favourite producer, musician, sound wiz. I like the interview but with D. Fagen's Nightfly album you are mistaken regarding the drummers. The entire album was produced by use of a drum computer...Wendel II by Roger Nichols. The drumming style of the humans was programmed but they got paid.
True, but not all the tracks! They used it as the first edit machine to perfect the drumtrack… but Maxine with Ed Greene is I think no Wendel… thanks for watching!
Man, that musical clip you keep using between question kills me. An finding myself bracing for the next time it comes up instead of what Jay is saying. Kind of chaotic editing.
@@RubenvanRoonDrumChannelhe only cut 2 tracks with them and 1 of them is a filler song .. I'd say they were bigger fans of Jeff, Bernhard and Keith more than anyone else

Your Truly right, sorry about that, Legend indeed. We are going to do a follow up, we gonna talk about Mr Vega!
Carlos Vega played great on everything!
I think he played on Gimme what you got, too.....Carlos was SOOOOO underrated....
Great talk and interview with lots of interesting information! Thank you!❤
Fantastic interview. Jay is a genius.
Jay is a fountain of knowledge, skills and experience in his game. Awesome interview and my guru.

Nothing better than hearing music recorded on tape again.
Was it Paul Humphrey or Ralph Humphrey that worked with Lawrence Welk?

Great interview 👍
Thank you for this video! Jay speaking about drums. You don't expect that to find on youtube.
What a great episode Ruben! Thanks for asking this questions that I also have been thinking of. I wonder if it is a Supraphonic snare.
Great interview Ruben! Graydon is one of the very best ever! I’m really enjoying your channel very much!
Thank you! Maybe you can share it a little bit would be very helpful, 🙏🏻

Nice to hear…. Still have a lot of questions;)
Fascinating, much love man.
Very nice interview with you two. Jay Graydon is a genius. You have a new subscriber ;-)
Thank you! Was indeed an amazing experience!!!

Exactly ! It was not a negative message, these cracks dont need a click: as Ringo would say" I am the f^}^{ing click"!
Love the interview!

I really like G grading. It can get a bit much after a while but what he’s really doing is recording this knowledge for posterity.
How about Alphonse Mouzon Mind Transplant ? !! Amazing Drumming and It Has Tommy Bolin , Ritenaur and Jay .
Super!

I think Tape is soo important to music, it just makes everything come to life!
Did Jay Graydon end up getting to the RUclips Channel? It seems I can’t find it
Still work in proces I think!
Great Interview!

What is Jay’s RUclips Channel called? The one he’s talking about here. On teaching. Has he started it yet? Can’t find it!🤷🏻♂️

Haha is mine... and the editing too;)
3:00 Asked why Steely Dan didn’t work with Steve Gadd more, Donald Fagen said that Steve Gadd had a "funny beat"!!! :-D
Well after he played AJA, there opinion was 180 degrees changed and working on Gaucho with him! and where his biggest fan;)
When Steve came to LA all the producer will contract him, because he had that extra thing!

No it is still on progress I Thinking
Whaah te gek Ruben!
High Crime came out in 1984 and the Linn 9000 was released late 84, so it's unlikely it was used on High Crime.
It was linndrums lm2
What is the music used for the credits ?
My own otherwise I get a copyright claim;)
