- Cool grosz-artiges concert von tongue in cheek popgroup Gruppo Sportivo auf der bühne von Markthalle, Hamburg in einem Program das damals Rockpalast hiesz (WDR,1982)! Mit der Hansl Vandenburg (mit Haar!), Peter Calicher, Max Mollinger, Martin Bakker und Laurens de Jonge, Jan de Ligt und Joep Maessen als die 'Doesn't Really Matterhorns'. Einfach Spitze!

Absolutely phenomenal. I had the privilege of listening to them as a sophomore in high school doing an exchange year while in Italy and a friend of mine came back from Holland and turned me onto this band. After moving back to the states they fall into obscurity and it was my loss. Watching this concert makes me realize what a tight band they were Hans knows how to write a song. The drummer is so energetic, and keeping the beat and the keyboard player is phenomenal. They are their own band and should have been famous across the pond. I’m so glad they’re still playing . But thank you for posting this. I wish I had been at that show.

I saw (and listen to) them in Barcelona about that year (82-83) and I really enjoyed but... today I've got a revelation. What a band! Notice this incredible sound quality for those years (biggest applause for the technic staff at the Rockpalast), that precission and impact, each instrument doing its thing, voices working all time... Makes me think in a Zappa/Talking Heads/Specials cocktail... with a kind of Groucho Marx/Elvis Costello at the front... There were and are such a unique band. All my love and recognition. If fun could be intelligent, GP are the demonstration. Thank you guys!!

een van de weinige bands waar de live versies identiek klinken aan de studio opnames! i love it.
WOW!!! What a tight performance...I had no idea they were so infatuated with ska in 1982, but they have fun with it, like everything else they do. Hans and band are in fine form...nary an out of place note or beat...very tight!! I'm hard pressed to think of a more intelligent, witty, rhyhmic, pop culture band that Gruppo Sportivo, and all of their assets are are display in this fine performance. And the audience is with them and responsive. I love that they exhausted their set list at the one hour mark and come back for five encores. Thanks for posting.

@FUNART media 5 years ago we certainly were and now live performances are even completely over but working together on small projects now and then, like a corona inspired smartphonesong EP and a video for the cancelled 40 years parkpop 2020.

Gruppo Sportivo meant a lot to me. I was playing Mistakes the 2nd day of college and my neighbor came running into my room all excited. He was Franz Vonacht. His father was primeminister of Holland at the time! We became friends. Unfortunately his father is a well known anti-Semite so I am glad our friendship didn't continue after college. One of my friends visited him in the Hague and taught Franz how to juggle which he kept up his entire life. He died a few years ago from cancer.

Arrived here from an "Autos of the 40's & 50's" clip that had a "cover" of an old Zappa song at the intro. ?'s & !'s, I remember their name from Trouser Press or something, but've never heard 'em. Nice energy. A superficial listen/watch up to 7:01 places them somewhere on the nice side of The Tubes maybe? Nothing challenging, but I haven't explored yet. Any suggestions?

Markthalle 1982 super, leider ohne Inge Bonthond und Lies Schilp, dafür mehr Gebläse, haben noch eins der letzten Konzerte bei Groningen gehört und gesehen.
+bestmusic4friends Die beiden Sängerinnen waren damals "Meike Touw und Josee van Iersel", sie waren 1982 an eigenen Projekten am Arbeiten. Lies Schilp spielte damals noch bei Hermann Brood Band. War selber 2012 in "Hengeloo" Niederlande. mit Inge Bonthond und Lies Schilp. Leider nur Songs von 10 Mistakes und Back to 78, die beiden ersten Alben! Pop goes the brain war der absolute Höhepunkt von Gruppo Sportivo, 1982/83.

They had 1 song (sure it was them). Don t know title, and I looked for this song long time ago. The song start something like " Tried to be a pop star....." The chorus goes something like " somebody out there who really really made it.......please send me some groupy you got plenty anyway. I saw them live in Belgium almost 30 years ago and I remember they played this song.
The song was a hit on my Belgieshe radio

without the girls? choices my friend, choices. moreover, in germany general public doesn't know gruppo's first two albums and singles. huh... grupettes? victory started there when sportivo was an all boy band and the album 'pop goes the brain'. the rest is history.

This would have been better with the following 2 things: 1) the female back up singers instead of the brass section and 2) more from 10 Mistakes.
Steven Fritchie in germany they don't know '10 mistakes'. just like 'back to 78' it was never succesfully released there. gruppo's/ my career in germany started with 'buddy odor is a gas!' if we would have played more songs from our first album it would have been our 11th mistake. by the way, in holland they hardly know this material and still think we disbanded in 1980... 😎
How sad. I do have "Back to 19 Mistakes", "Second Life", "Married with Singles", "Topless 16", "Rock Now, Roll Later" so I suppose that covers all the full CDs that I can find. "10 Mistakes" was the first album that I heard and I love it. I still think the female back up singers were an asset.
I saw the band in Warstein and Göttingen in the 80s. In Göttingen the whole audience was singing "in Tokyo..." and Hans finally just played only the guitar. Great...

This is really below par....remember seeing GS in my hometown Aarhus probobaly in 1983....in a stripped down version of the band....I was of course front row and asked for "she´s a police dog"....no dice...so I puked on the guitarist´s pedals....he took it in good stride....! Shi-it, it´s 40+ years ago....
