Fly Tying: Peacock & Partridge

  • The Peacock and Partridge is an extremely old pattern, yet the fish don't seem to like the classics, and this fly is no exception. It can be fished in all water columns but seems to do especially well in upper water columns during a hatch when fish are keyed in on emergers. I like to fish it about 18 inches below a dry fly in these circumstances. Swining it up from the bottom while nymph can also be very effective as the legs add a lot of movement to the fly and the fish can really go wild for that.
    Materials I used:
Hook: Standard Dry fly, (I like it to be just below a dry but a heavier hook can be used if you want to nymph it.
Thread: Danville 70 Denier flymaster plus
    Body: Peacock herl
    Collar/Legs: Partridge feather

Research the Nor-vise, Norm Norlander on RUclips. I have had mine for about 30 years and absolutely love it!!! I learned on a traditional vise and tied that way for about 5 years then got introduced to the Nor-vise at a local Fly Shop and no need to go back. Nor-vise tie better flies faster!. Your Welcome

I believe you are going places with this channel. Your doing great and are on point with the instructions. I agree with this really produces fish. I still like to fish them down stream in heavy cover, no room for a back cast and not wanting to spook the hole on a little creek.

Thanks so much! This little guys are really versatile and I can see how that would be very effective. I think they are often overlooked because they aren't "sexy" to tie but sometimes simple works best.

Simple, but deadly ! Tied with a silver or Gold Rib & very sparse hackle.....One of my fave patterns

They certainly are, I never believed how deadly they were until I actually tried one. It sure is fun to try different variations too, just like you mentioned.

How did the Irish trout like it? I had to step away for a bit to do some other things, but I'm working on another video now and hope to have it done before U.S. Thanksgiving.

Great comments during the time you tied the fly. You got a new prem.
I’m a bit new to fly fishing and tying my own flies. Is this a wet or a dry fly?

This is considered a wet fly. A common tactic with it is to swing it at the end of a drift.
