I have a Lexus CT, which is the same engine system as Prius. I was depressed with the engine vibration for the last couple of years. I brought the car to multiple dealers, and they replaced plugs, battery, tires, etc, charging me many $k. Then I found this video. I followed the instructions, and the vibration is gone. Just did it on my 2010 Prius (150K+ miles). A few notes:
    1. There's no real need to unclip the plastic bracket, just move it out of the way.
    2. Absolutely no need for a bronze brush and the drill. Blast that pipe with throttle body / carb cleaner, and it's shiny as new.
    3. Wrap a piece of lint free cloth on a stick and saturate it with carb cleaner. Wipe the corresponding manifold & valve holes with it, rinsing with a stream of carb cleaner after each insertion. Basically same technique as removing the ear wax: don't push it in )

Unfortunately, that won't clear a P0401 code, in most cases. However, it is helpful to clean the pipe out. Here's what I did to correct the restricted flow problem.
When you pull he plastic cover off of the top of the engine, you'll see the round (nipple-like) cover to the EGR solenoid. Remove the two Phillips head screws and pull the cover off, no need to disconnect the wiring harness. Unscrew the cylindrical magnet with the bearing on top. The shaft will be exposed. If you put a washer over the shaft, just covering the round disk, then screw the magnet back on, this increases the throw of the plunger, and restores the flow.
If you look inside the cover, you'll see a small plastic ridge, it's covered with grease. Look closely and you'll see that it's worn down and not letting the valve open like it should, or used to. This is what fixed mine, and I just wanted to save headaches for others.
It will take three run cycles to clear the code. You just saved some cash...HAPPY DANCE ! ! !

Tips to PREVENT HEAD GASKET FAILURE:
231K - 2013 Prius. Just had head gasket replaced for $1,500.
Could of prevented it if I cleaned/replaced EGR cooler around my second run of 80K or 90K miles?
Maybe it happened to me a bit sooner because I cleaned my EGR cooler out about 90% +\- at 130k miles, + 1000 miles/week, 50K/yr. and maybe because of potentially more cold/heat cycles on the head gasket.
Lots of people highly recommend 3rd gen prius owners clean or replace EGR cooler AT or BEFORE you hit every 100K miles.
EGR cooler $178 new on ebay, $300 at toyota, part 25601-37010. Clean EGR pipe and valve with the intake manifold/throttle body. Replace PCV valve, optional oil catch can.
    X
At 230K miles my EGR cooler was completely blocked up with soot (previous cleaning at 130K). My symptoms were brief misfire on #2 couple times every 100 miles and slow engine coolant leak into the engine. #2 spark plug and #2 set of 4 valves were pretty dirty. Head gasket and cylinder head was replaced with refurbished one. (6,000/3month
warranty). Car runs great so far. 4th Gen Prius has improved this problem.

@@ashleyryder6764 Hi. yes I think all of 3rd gen prius have this issue above the first 120k miles and every 100k +/-. Blame toyota I guess for not creating a better EGR flow system. goodbye 1500$ :-0 I knew of the problem before i bought the prius when researching and it still happened to me, i was even planning on cleaning it before it happened.
As I said in my first post it cost me 170$ on ebay but that is out of country and shipping time consider. search the part # or pay toyota $300 w/tax or clean the part very good and replace or buy the part and keep your old cooler to have it cleaned for the next 100k miles cleaning. clean cooler, pipe, valve, intake, replace pcv valve, i have not put an oil catch can in but that is optional and may help. To clarify the egr system brings combustion gases into a cooler, then through an egr valve (controllled by load) then into the intake. Usualy problems associated with shaking and running poorly arw because the egr valve is not functioning properly. A dirty pipe and intake is the result, not the problem. A better idea would be to start at the block and clean the cooler if need be, then the valve itself. If the valve is too dirty it stays open and dumps air into the intake at the wrong time, and will gunk up the intake, making the car shake at low load or idle.

    2010 Prius egr information CRITICAL!
If you have e code for restricted egr flow, here's what to do. Seriously, I've done this in parking lots in under two minutes!
Pop off the plastic engine cover, and see the egr valve on the right side. Unclip the wire harness, remove the two Phillips screws, and pull off the cover. Rotate the cylinder counter-clockwise and pull it off. Now, find a lock-washer that fits over the shaft, and clears the spring. Slide it onto the shaft and reassemble.
Here's why, if you want to know.
There's a plastic hub that gets worn down inside of the cylinder and, over time, won't engage the plunger enough to recirculate the exhaust gases. The lock-washer acts as a shim and gets it working again. Allow 5 or so engine cycles (cool to warm, and back again) for the light to reset. Now, punch it! It runs WAY better! Now, use ashtrays, don't beep your car to lock it, and smile more!

On my 2010 prius when the battery is low and at low speed acceleration (10-15%) there is a rattling sound. This only occurs when the battery is low and the engine is running to charge the battery. I read online that this could be due to a dirty EGR. What do you think? I am wondering if you would have insight on this… I recently did the EGR clean out, the pipe, the ugh radiator cooler looking thing, and the EGR valve too. Everything reassembled and car runs like new. So much more power. And check engine light never came back on.
But now I am smelling exhaust when I am driving close to a truck or whatever. Doesn’t matter if my car is on recirculating air or fresh air, it comes in. But if I am not driving next to a smelly truck, I don’t get smell. So smell is not coming from the Prius.

BE AWARE: There are other problems that can cause a P0401 code. This video helped, but did not resolve the issue. In addition, I was having infrequent overheating and poor mileage. After replacing all the usual culprits, I found the ROOT CAUSE to be the exhaust flow coolant recirculation system under the car to be the problem. For some crazy reason the 2010 Prius circulates the coolant around the exhaust pipe to (1) warm the engine faster, and (2) make the heater work faster. They also put a butter-fly value in the exhaust pipe with a spring blocking the flow! It should open when the car warms up. Mine froze and held the valve partially closed and continued to circulate coolant around a hot exhaust. My solution in Tucson AZ was to bypass the coolant line and bolt the valve open. RESULT: no code, no overheating, great mileage, and much better performance.

Hi Can you make a video showing how to recharge the Prius 2010 air conditioner?

I recently recharged my AC at the dealership. You need a machine to do that service.

You can recharge with pure refrigerant without any additive, no oil. Just pure can, smallest can, and completely new charger hose. I would buy new 3 lines hose with pressure meter on it that can be connected to high and low pressure lines. So, you are not overcharge it. 3 line hoses also good to diagnose what the real problems, compressor, condenser, evaporator, or just low refrigreant. Just recharge it and do not use any oil unless it is ND11 (non-conductive oil). PAG oil for other cars will short your 110V AC compressor and destroy it.

Good video but your electric ratchet link is wrong.
