- Sir Keir Starmer has said he will defend the decisions made in the budget "all day long" amid anger from farmers over inheritance tax changes.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced last month in her key speech that from April 2026, farms worth more than £1m will face an inheritance tax rate of 20%, rather than the standard 40% applied to other land and property.

No tax, no country...... Nobody is saying farmers have millions to spare, what they are doing is pointing out that very few will be affected, that those who are will have ten years to pay, and that in any case the allowance is huge.

We need to tax more to fund our friends in Israel and Ukraine.
This is actually going to help our farming industry, kinda. When these tax loopholes were created in 1984, tax planners got their super rich clients to buy up farmland as a way to bypass inheritance tax. This caused the price of farmland to increase. When the loophole is closed/reduced, it will encourage more farmland to be used as productive farmland as the super rich sell up.

Why should farmers have special treatment to the rest of us? When my father dies the business and living accommodation which is on the business premises, passes to me and yet I have to pay IT after the first £360,00
They grow the food we need to live, farming is not easy, imported food would cost US a lot more for worser quality food. Maybe they should have to sign a deal to keep the farmland only for producing food so they can't sell? Also cut spending on the war might help us as a country.
