I first heard this song by Blow when I was in college in 1978, sung by Alfred Deller on a phonodisc. I fell in love with the warbling notes of the two soloists. This rendition is equally good! Thank you!

I believe the countertenor voice was new in Britain at this time. What a showcase, with its two octave range. And how very fine a piece. I heard it more than 50 years ago. Great to become reacquainted. Thanks for the score as well.

Wonderful duets voice and recorder. Funeral music of great composers is always worth listening to. Josquin's ode to ochegem case in point

Sometimes non-English musicians bring a useful view of what could be quite a closed world at the English royal court during House of Orange to Hanover period and this is a wonderful example.
The enormous significance of Dr John Blow as head of music for the royal court lies in his self-knowledge of his own limitations combined with promoting the wealth of talent from a diverse cross section of the population. Pelham Humfrey was a pupil and Blow has the right sort of temperament to contain the young man's ego. William Croft was also an immensely talented but troubled person and he took his own life.
But Henry Purcell's sheer genius was in a different league and Blow understood this so well that he handed his position of court organist to his pupil and Henry's younger brother (or cousin) Daniel to ease money worries.
There was a lot of interaction between Blow and the younger men and Blow was an excellent organizer which allowed performances to occur without the interference and expense which often stultified music in the Stuart period.
Blow fended off criticisms of Purcell's unusual harmonic language and was aware of his health problems.
Although Blow himself wrote in a more mainstream baroque style than Purcell he incorporated some quotations in his tribute to his friend who died aged only 36.

Great. Dr Blow sounds like the sort of name that made and sold an "Excellente remedie for the fartes" in a London shop

Check out the performance of this by, for me, the right combination of voices - alto Robin Blaze and haute-contre (high tenor) Jason Darnell. ruclips.net/video/yZCwxVqb-mU/видео.html - who also happen to be native English speakers, which makes a real difference when words are as important to the piece as here.

Not too keen on the warbling throats or the darling, darling, darling, darling man.
